Too many people can intercept "packages" on the net and get that kind of info. As for my AIM, it's the same as my e-mail. I loved your comment about the soap. It made me laugh, and I hadn't felt like laughing much since I got up. Just a bit worried about things in general, enough to bring the little black cloud to hover over me. Anyways, enough of that. Must go do some research. Later!! Whatever your opinions may be, a little tact would be desireable, and such harsh language is really unnecessary to use to someone who, at least to all appearances, does not merit being talked to in this manner. It's over now, just for future reference, people will respect your opinion much more if you present it in a way that wouldn't be perceived as an attack or an insult. j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 13:44:39 EDT From: SnugaKitn@aol.com Subject: Number thing Giving out your Number is a bad idea for another reason. Someone got a hold of my home phone # somehow this year and charged $50 worth of 1-900 number calls to my account. Luckily I never use that line for anything other than internet dial-up (don't laugh) so I was able to contest the charges and have them removed from my account. My parents had a similar problem about 5 years ago when prisoners from the Lake County Prison were using their number to make long distance phone calls to their account. Besides...isn't Xeno still out there? Do you want him calling you? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 16:45:07 -0500 From: "BirdBlack" Subject: Re: NPR Re: giving out phone #s ::BirdBlack snuggles up close to the lightning rod:: sp00k is right. If there is someone in your life who intends you harm, chances are they are not in this list. More to the point though, if someone does intend harm, it's really not all that hard to track you down and get your number. That said, I'll tell you why Bird is not adding his number to the list. He works nights. Friends calling is always great,.. just not 3 hours into his 8. BirdBlack Psst. You cannot have an operator put the call through and bill it to a telephone number.. 900 numbers are direct dialed calls. In the case of the psycho that said someone got ahold of her computer number and charged 900 calls to it. There are two ways this happend. 1 is someone got on her computer and accessed a site most typically adult sites. In order to access the content of the sight it downloads a viewing program that has a built in dialer. If you do not read the terms or small print then you don't see the part that says you will be disconnected and a 900 number will be dialed in which you will be billed at x.xx per min.. The 2nd option is someone within the home or visiting the home plugged in a phone to that jack or the computers additional port and dialed a 900 number whether a wrestling hotline or a adult line.. Bottom line is someone living in that home or visiting that home accessed a 900 number. (So I would suggest she look closely at friends or relatives. Just might end up with some international or long distance calls soon. If you don't have a international block get one, better safe than sorry. 900 they will credit once long distance is lot tougher especially if you've had a prior dispute) Reason she was not charged was as most long distance carriers will do is give a 1 x courtesy credit and require a 900 block put through the local provider. This however does not exclude the the 900 company from trying to sue for the charges after the long distance carrier sends back the charges as unbillable.. Some long distance carriers will actually contact the 900 agency that keeps a recording of calls for this purpose and replay the call for the long distance company with the customer conferenced in to hear.. You can imagine the upset wife after she hears it and had been screaming 10 min earlier how her son or husband would never call one of those numbers Hahaha. Now with exception of any line tampering there is no other way your going to be billed for 900 calls. You can't make 900 calls from pay phones, calling cards, operators and I'm pretty certain cell phones as well.
