Hey APs, I'm not a BUffy fanatic, but Good Girl Willow turned oh so bad was something I couldn't pass up. I had to work so I set my VCR, and ran out of tape! I've only seen the first 45 minutes or so (as Willow sends Buffy some friends while she's trapped in the crypt), so if you've only got the last hour, I'd be eternally grateful! I'd even pay shipping on the tape! I'm in Washington State, north of Seattle - please email if you can help out! Thanks a ton! While I think the point is made of Pantene being the last sponsor (and if we think aboutit most of Poe's concerts have been sponsored - by radio stations), I think the difference is H-Y-P-E. It's all about the hype. How many comercials have you signed on for, how many times are you OBLIGATED to say the sponsr's name during the show, what are you hocking, does any particular part of your music back the product you are fronting. Example: Born in the USA, Bruce Springstein used to promote a national product would be stoopid. The song actually refers to the struggle of an American to raise him/herself up in this country. Think about that if you ever hear a politician or news show playing it in the attempt to be patriotic. Poe sings: "Hey Pretty" goes great with beauty products. Poe sings: "Walk the Walk" would actually be an awesome song for a hip pair of shoes. Poe sings: "Chokin the Cherry" for a new sundae covered in Marachinos- this idea would label her a sell out in 2.2 seconds. Poe sings: "Not a virgin anymore" for a condom commercial and I think all of us would feel a bit betrayed because getting laid is not all the song is about. Hell, B-52s sing for Target now and every 70's rock classic is a truck commercial. It is all about the amount of backing you give to a product and if their product "fits" your product. I welcome additions/commentary to this debate! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 08:19:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Miki Proud Subject: Re: Sell out tangent Maybe it's just me, but I have a much different definition of 'sell-out' than the rest of you guys. Earning money for your music doesn't make you a sell-out. Neither does being sponsored or allowing your music to be played in a commercial. Selling out, to me, means changing your music, appearance, attitude, or beliefs in order to sell more records. For example, if Poe got sponsored by Cover Girl and they played Hey Pretty in their commercial, that would not be selling out. However, if she had Mandy Moore as the opening act on her Cover Girl sponsored tour, and then released an album of cheese pop, that would be selling-out. Similarly, if Poe started preaching about abstinence, going to church every Sunday, and saying No to drugs because her record company was trying to make her more 'kid friendly,' she'd be a sell-out. If she started dressing in pant suits, or got breast implants and jumped up and down in crappy poppy music videos, then she'd be a sell-out. Picking up a paycheck from some company that just wants to use your song is perfectly acceptable. It's only in changing to conform to the opinions of the masses that you become a sell-out. But then, that's just my take on things. Much Love Miki ===== "Be who you are and say what you feel. I think if an artist can make their music and not compromise their artistic vision, and make a Bi-gillion dollars from some company that thinks modern adult consumers care... More power to them both... art costs money.. it's a fact, I have respected poe as an artist since I was 17 years old... at the ripe old age of 22 I have to say I'm still as impressed as I was in the begining...
