These would usually be programs wrapped onto executable progs (without giving easy evidence) and would be installed in the background once the exe prog is ran. These are usually transmitted via email or by downloaded progs. Yes, some antivirii progs can scan for trojans, the best one I've come across is by http://www.kaspersky.com/ (Kaspersky Labs). This kid - Kaspersky used to be on the "slightly darker side" >;) and even using the program without updates STILL gives you great protection against trojans and virii because - he knows what to look for. Personally, I don't download anything from anyone I don't trust. I don't even download email attachments that can be executable nor do I use an exploitable Micro$oft email program for my email. Still, even if I know the person - I scan the hell out of whatever they send. The first paragraph assumes you are running an OS that doesn't have server daemons running on it. All I can tell from your email is that you are running "AOL 7.0 for Windows" so I don't know exactly what your OS is. If you are running an OS with server daemons included then you should be concerned about those daemons being exploited and in the end being used as a means to control your machine (depending on the exploit and compromise) and your webcam. This would fall under your firewall software in the realm of protection. Any exploits to Netmeeting itself would also be covered here. Personally, what I would do is find out what ports Netmeeting uses and configure your firewall to allow only traffic from your boyfriends ip to yours in the regard of the ports used by Netmeeting (below). This will not ensure your protection by any means but it will prevent specific Netmeeting exploits. Course... If it were me I'd be running a FreeBSD statefull firewall and code the rules on the fly >;) Here is the info you need to setup your firewall for Netmeeting: Port Function Outbound Connection 389 Internet Locator Service (ILS) TCP 522 User Location Service TCP 1503 T.120 TCP 1720 H.323 call setup TCP 1731 Audio call control TCP Dynamic H.323 call control TCP Dynamic H.323 streaming Real-Time Transfer Protocol (RTP) over UDP To establish outbound NetMeeting connections through a firewall, the firewall must be configured to do the following: Pass through primary TCP connections on ports 389, 522, 1503, 1720, and 1731. Pass through secondary TCP and UDP connections on dynamically assigned ports (1024-65535). I am no Micro$oft engineer, actually a Unix engineer. If you would like credentials to be sure I'm not full of it, simply inquire :) Granted - it is morning and I haven't had my coffee so I may have missed something... I hope this helps... First you click on "Mail" and then go down to "Mail Controls." When it asks who you want to set mail controls for, make sure it's your screenname, and then click on the circle that says "Customize mail controls for this screenname" and then hit "Next." The next screen will have a list of options on how to block and who to block. Click the one that says "Block e-mail from the listed AOL members, e-mail addresses, and domains. Allow e-mail from all others." Then, in the little text box next to that, type in the e-mail address(es) that you want blocked and hit "Add." Only add one address at a time, though, if you want to block multiple addresses. Then hit "Next" on the rest of the screens, and then "Save" and "Close" on the two final ones, and it should be all set up for you so that you won't receive his email anymore. The artists are getting any money from those sales, are they? Why is it that the computer makes it such a hot topic? Is it because the internet is like a free world? Also wanted to say that the thing that I like about the ability to find music online is that you can find some stuff that you just can't buy. I know this is going to sound a bit corney, but I found a whole lot of folk/bluegrass songs on Napster that I had on scratchy vinyl ( and couldn't find on CD to buy anywhere) that I now have on CD,- clearly. I'm very thankful for that. They can also be found in large bins in most office supply stores like Office Depot, or Office Max. The tins I mentioned can be used as ash trays as well. AOL keeps jacking the price up so they can make hundreds of thousands CDs with "free" service and they send them to me to use as a coaster. God bless AOL 7.0! So at some point the artist got the money for every album. Online however, it takes only one album to get online to fill everyone's downloading needs (eventually). For example, every Mary Prankster live bootleg available online (except for one) was ripped and put online by me. I got Mary's permission beforehand, of course. But just one guy can do a lot with viral distribution.
