Subject: Re: npr: Bush trying to stop Wicca!!!!! First, I'd be interested in knowing exactly what actions he's supposedly taken to stop Wicca from being recognized. Can you cite any specific statement's he's made, or any specific legislation he's trying to pass that would do it? With that being said, I'm far from a Bush fan. It's my opinion that he's flushing this country (even further) down the toilet and that he's a total fucking moron. And if what you say is true, it wouldn't surprise me. Nevertheless, I'd like to see evidence before adding this to my list of grievances. While we're on the subject, though, I'd like to see atheism legally recognized as religion. I know this sounds contradictory, but hear me out. Did you know that religious organizations (or those recognized as one in the eyes of the law) don't have to pay taxes on property they own? You'd be surprised at some of the shit the Catholic church (for example) owns. I bet that they'd pull out of a LOT of things quickly if they had to pay taxes on them. The legal system as it currently is rewards people for having religious beliefs (and in many other ways than just tax breaks.) To me that's a CLEAR fucking violation of the Bill of Rights. And at the risk of sounding like I'm playing the victim, there aren't all that many atheists, compared to all the religious folk, to do anything about it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 04:21:47 -0400 From: "Ed Hunsinger" Subject: RE: fate of navelsex Wow, lots of support for mirrors. Should religions like Wicca be banned from recognition by the military, as some legislators suggest? Submitted from Amber of San Diego, California through Yahoo! (10/15/00) Answer from George W. Bush: Religious Freedom And Tolerance Is A Protected Right I am committed to the First Amendment principles of religious freedom, tolerance, and diversity. Whether Mormon, Methodist, Jewish, or Muslim, Americans should be able to participate in their constitutional free exercise of religion. I do not think witchcraft is a religion, and I do not think it is in any way appropriate for the U.S. military to promote it. No other campaigns have provided rebuttals to this yet. ====================================================================== http://www.positiveatheism.org/writ/bushwicca.htm | "I don't think that witchcraft is a religion. I wish the military would rethink this decision." - -- George W. Bush to ABCNEWS, June, 1999 ======================================================================= From "About.Com" http://altreligion.about.com/library/weekly/aa020701a.htm | Government Choice of 'Acceptable' Faiths In order to comply with the First Amendment, a federal program to fund religious groups must fund every religious group in the U.S., without exception. But someone, somewhere, must draw a line between religious and secular institutions in order to even begin handing out the greenbacks. Is Wicca a religion? (Pres. Bush doesn't think so...) Scientology? The Church of Satan? Eventually, in order to fund religious charities, someone in a Federal office must make these tough choices - or suffer the backlash from a horrified American public whose tax dollars are funding "cults and Satanists". ======================================================================= sp00k etc ... He said that Wicca and paganism are not real religions and should not be recognized by the .gov . Well, Wicca isn't federally recognized as it sits but C.A.W or Church of All Worlds - is. He indicated as much during a speech in regards to what he had planned if he were elected... C.A.W is a way to add yourself (should you be just about any sort of pagan) to a federally recognized religion and be protected by what laws are currently in place to protect religion for the time being >;). The "church" has nests or proto-nests that you would either join or start on your own. You can check the official site at: http://www.caw.org/. I know this much because I am a member of the "Standing Stone Circle" which is a nest of the C.A.W. To find the origins of the church I'd suggest reading Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. In the Tennessee State Constitution it's forbidden to hold an office if you're an atheist. Isn't that stupid? As far as the Bush thing, I totally agree with you... However, I think Bush wouldn't waste his time on religion when he could be pumping the hell out of Alaska for oil. I'm not even worried about Bush trying to make the Pill hard to get anymore although about 30 states in American don't have insurance companies that cover birth control. Anyway, online petitions are also a WASTE OF TIME! Don't bother with them! I don't think anyone would arrest someone for practicing Wicca, so what's to worry? Who cares about his opinion on religion? Anyway, the subject line is a bit misleading, Bush isn't trying to "stop" Wicca, nor has he the right to *stop* any other religion. That's clearly violating the 1st Amendment. Chill. I'm not entirely sure why no one has fought back against him, I think it's mostly because even though he's made those statements he hasn't done anything YET to get rid of us. Plus, it's kind of like the whole Dr. Laura thing when she said that wicca wasn't a real religion, we tried to fight back against her but it ended up falling on deaf ears. Plus I think it might also be fear of backlash, taking on a radio "shrink" and taking on the white house are two entirely different things, I know that I would be afraid to take on the white house on something like this where wicca is still not widely accepted. It's accepted yes, but not very widely. Only within the last 10 years or so has wicca REALLY started to enter the mainstream. ~LB "You haven't truly made it until your head is on a pez dispenser." Correction, Wicca has been a constitutionally reconized religion since 1986. It even has a section in the military chaplin's handbook. ~LB "You haven't truly made it until your head is on a pez dispenser." "I once stayed up all night playing poker with tarot cards. Let the man talk, his right to freedom of speech (no matter how intelligent or moronic) is promised by the same amendment that promises freedom of religion to Wiccans. He can say he'd like to get rid of wiccans all he wants, and he can say that wicca isn't a legit religion all he wants. Nobody has the right to silence that. So long as he doesn't try to make his whims into laws, let people see him for who he is. If we really went on the war path every time the president said something stupid, we'd never get anything done.
