From: Ed Hunsinger >There should be all sorts of >decompression software out there to "unzip" them. Shell, got any suggestions >on what to use? Most Windoze users will want to get mkwACT. It's the same concept as Winzip, drag and drop the SHN on it or simply right-click the file. The difference is there is a tiny extra file that usually comes along with SHNs that will make sure the files aren't corrupted. It is a graphical frontend for the DOS program shorten.exe. There is software for Mac and Linux users too. There are detailed walkthroughs with pictures and downloads for everything at http://etree.org/ Since CD quality SHNs are half the size of a WAV, yes, they're a bit big for modem users who aren't used to long downloads. Yet I am pushing for SHN distribution because 1) there's plenty of people here on broadband so downloading big files is less of a big deal, 2) many people burn their MP3s to audio anyway, so why distribute files that lose quality? 3) unlike MP3s, SHNs are accepted in trading communities. Similarly I've been trying to get people to experiment with sharing their Poe MP3s and such with other APs, because SHNs take up so much bandwidth. It makes more sense for Ed to share the SHNs with, say, 3 other people first, then they go and share the SHNs to others, rather than Ed having to upload a 350MB show to 20 people at once... If you're curious, I suggest you guys use those WOXY SHNs as practice and start learning about them now. I have started distributing SHNs and it's just a matter of time before you guys will be able to hear them. I will upload the SHN programs to mm.poe.st later today so you guys can get them easily. For now, poke around http://etree.org/ and if you're a Tori fan, you should check out http://www.torilive.org/ - --Michele http://www.shellE.org/ Home of PsYcHovixen, Poe documents (including the Poe discography), Garbage and Poe trading, eXej, 12 Rounds, Mono, and Exploration Z: A Haunted House Of Leaves Alternate Universe ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 12:17:23 GMT+1 From: Thierry Pottier Subject: about .shn sound files.... & thnx everyone... If you have a problem with that then don't go to the bbs anymore. You have a right to disagree but if he has a logical reason for his beliefs, don't get pissed off about it. This situation quite bluntly Pisses ME OFF. If you don't even know the whole story you're not really the best person to judge either side are you? Does it seem competely impossible that Dan's relationship with Poe is different than yours? You have a right to feel the way you choose to about Poe or Dan but Dan has the right to the way he feels about Poe and other APs and no amount of "how dare you"s and and insults directed his way are going to change his mind. Now I'm not trying to say I know the whole story or anything like that but I can't stand by and let some one who has the right to say what he feels and get publicly flamed for it when most of the people who are doing it don't know jack shit about what's going on but automatically assume they do. Poe doesn't owe you anything? Poe owes her entire singing career to the people who listen to her. Yes she has talent but talent doesn't equal a career. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed that MTV sucks because you don't have to have talent to make it in the music industry today you need FANS, people who buy your records, call in requests etc. All of which the APs did. If you still don't get the picture there is no help for you and no amount of logic will get through to you. Thanks you for all that. I purused THE authority on all music that is Poe ... the Poe Discography kept by our own amazing Shell, and I did not see these songs ( but then again I am old, snile and getting blind,) so I would assume that these songs are among the new ones she has written for the new CD. Have you all thought about how much new music is there waiting for us? During the Border's tour she said that she had up to 40 songs left over from the Haunted project and in other interviews she indicated there may be another CD along the same theme, but with different directions. She also spoke of a concept she had in mind that she is not telling anyone about that she feels would be her best ever and would be revolutionary. Knowing Poe, I don't doubt that it will be! From shortly after 9/11 till the POE/TOE tour she was spending so much time mixing for the new CD that Titus ended up moving into the house since they were sleeping so little! (Titus is her sound engineer.) Now, Pierre from Nettwerk says she is writting some brilliant NEW songs yet! We will be hearing from Poe for a long time to come! This has just been the beginning. In the 2/1/02 interview with AP Brad from Cleveland Poe spoke of her desire to get on the road and play these new songs live for her fans even before they come out on CD. I would guess these are a few of the songs we will here. As for the infamous picture I am attaching a copy to you. I agree with your comments about my rights and my feelings and perceptions. In defense of those who were blasting me, and to let them know that I heard them and understand their side too ... with the exception of Rusty, I don't think anyone was upset with the picture itself. It was my caption which they incorrectly thought I meant to infer that THEY felt that way about Poe. That I was saying each and every AP felt that way, and that obviously is not the case! They are correct, I don't think there is ANY feeling that would be accurate to say each and every AP was feeling at a given moment and I did not mean to make such an inferance. I welcome my critics, regardless of if I agree with them or not! EVERY single user on the BBS, EVERY SINGLE AP, myself included alongside the one who hates me most are valuable members of the AP community and are welcome on my BBS. Heck, if I can't get enough people arguing with some of my more "out there" arguments you will notice I will start to argue with my own position!
