Not really. First off, I love this book. I thought it was stunning. Anyway, I don't think that in vampire culture, there is any sort of differentiation between the sexes except whatever they were in their human life. They're dead, or undead. None of their organs work quite like they did. No hormones, just a need for love and passion and companionship. They get it from those closest to them. I mean, look at the relationship between Louis, and the child vampire Claudia. Her being a child made no difference, because in reality, she was no longer a child. Well, the rest of them are no longer male or female, they just look that way. You get it? :) It's a world of people, not divided by sexes. Any thought of any one of them being male or female is just because of the conditioning you and they get from having been human, in my humble opinion. Besides, all of them, if you still insist they are gay, are actually bisexual. :) I think it's nice to see a writer that dares to include such a theme in her stories, because for osme reason, in this world, lesbians are ok, but gay men aren't? That sucks. Good book, but I don't like the way she's slowly retroactively making all the vampires gay. Not that I mind them being gay -- it'd have been fine if she'd made them gay in the first place. I just don't like the way she's going back and "rewriting history" if you will. Yes, I know there are all sorts of explanations and justifications for why she's doing it, or it could be argued somewhat successfully that she's always had them that way, etc, etc. That's just the way I feel, though. >> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 10:28:25 EST From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: Blood and Gold by Anne Rice...gay? Yeah, her vamps are androgynous, but they can still get wood and even do the wild thing...but with no ejaculation...dunno about the females. Vampire love is better than regular sex anyway. My all time favorite of her books is not one of the Vampire Chronicles though...it is the first of the Mayfair Witch series, "The Witching Hour". You MUST read that one. I just finished "Merrick" a while back. I loved Vanilla Sky, too. I'm obsessed with movies that hint at alternate realities and such. The Matrix is a favourite as well. Has anyone seen the Spanish film that Vanilla Sky was based on? It was released as Open Your Eyes here in the States. I've yet to watch it, I'm wondering how closely Vanilla Sky was patterned after it. I'm so obsessed with the movie that I keep listening to the soundtrack ('Can We Still be Friends' in particular) on repeat. My feelings on Valentine's Day are mixed. I'm not into mainstream commercialism usually. I cringe at the usual holiday decor and all that. And up until two years ago, I was very anti-romance (the sappy, you must have a significant other to be happy crap). Unfortunately for this part of my personality, I met my husband on Valentine's Day, thus forcing me to acknowledge and like the day I always hated. Still, I must go with the gory movie people. Bloody Valentine's are the best. ;) I'm somewhat of a bookworm (when I have time). I recently finished Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho. I recommend it to those that enjoyed the Bell Jar, Girl Interrupted, or Prozac Nation. It's a bit different, but in the similar depressed vein. I just started Echo by Francesca Lia Block and it's wonderful. I must also rave about the Griffin and Sabine books by Nick Bantok. They are short and simple, but engrossing. Especially if you've ever been in a long distance relationship. And I've been slowly making my way through Salman Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her Feet. I may never finish it. But I've always cherished valentines. Even when I was little and admiring all the hearts everywhere and the pretty pink and white and red colors together, cheesy stuff like that made me happy. I rarely ever had someone special for the holiday, till now, but even then I admired it simply because it's one day out of the whole freakin year where you can go all out and really really crazy just to show your love for someone. I know you're all like, "dude I get told every day ever hour [yadayada, whatever] that I'm beautiful" and special things like that -- I get this everyday too -- but it's still NICE. Even when you don't have any. I can't recall ever feeling as cynical and hardened about a special day like this, the way all of you are feeling, even when I didn't have a significant other. If it weren't for Halloween, Valentines would definitely be my favorite *holiday*. >>Some of us have problems with the fact that we DON'T get any of that stuff. I know none of us are in kindergarten anymore, but did you NOT do that thing in class where everyone made cards for everyone and all your classmates got cards and candies and goodies from whoever, no matter if you liked the person or not? Doing this sort of crappy thing back then certainly made ME feel good, despite the fact that these kids ate my paste and clay. > I can't believe people have a problem with a day that you get free > candy/flowers/cheap ass Batman cards with cheesy valantine related lines on > the back. What's wrong with you people?! See, she's got the hang of it. Gorey movies are cool, but you can watch those anytime, and chick flick tearjerker movies suck sometimes, but one day, just ONE day out of the year, people like to be able to go nuts for someone, even just a crush, without feeling completely stupid for being so gushily vomit-inducing romantic. Why is it so bad? I thought ONE of you would oppose this whole valentines boycott...
