How's everyone feel about joining in the grand tradition that me and my friends set up for Valentines Day (since we all hate dating). Each year on February 14th we rent really gory horror movies and sit around watching them, no significant others allowed. It really takes the strain off of Valentines day, and hey, on a day when everyone else is exchanging chocolates, wouldn't you love to see some girl get ripped in half with a chainsaw? ===== "Be who you are and say what you feel. Subject: movies You guys should check out Brotherhood of the Wolf. I just watched the French version (with English subtitles) and I was stunned. It's out in NYC and LA, but as far as I know nowhere else in the States just yet. The trailer doesn't explain much but the basic premise is that a beast is killing villages and two men are sent by the King of France to try and stop it. In many respects it's Sleepy Hollow, but done infinitely better. Go watch it as soon as it comes to your neck of the woods. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 00:14:03 -0800 (PST) From: Lawrence Dvoroznak Subject: NPR......Books instead of movies...... heh, before I start, I'd just like to say that I'm surprised in the recent avalanche of posts, the past few days if I even got a digest from here, there were not very many posts from it, so I'm glad people are getting back into it..... OK, now onto books..... I haven't read many books lately, but books that I did read and do like are.... A Theif's Journal by Jean Genet, even if you aren't into literature that is mainly about gay sex, this book is really good, better than most of the books I've read by him, but some of his other books that I liked were Quarralle and Our Lady of the Flowers(there are more, but I can't think) GB Shaw is also great, I love his plays, heh, they always make me laugh, but then, it doesn't really take much for that...Man or Superman, the Millionairess, Major Barbara, Pygmalion:A Romance in Five Acts, Back to Methuselah, and many others, I could read him forever...... Poppy Z Brite is also a great writer, and still alive and writing.....I've read her first two books, and sooooooo many people are telling me that Exquisite Corpse is a great book tooo, so I may get that one..... heh, and on that note, I saw a great documentary thing on PBS the other day, it was about Huckleberry Finn and Mark Twain. It was like about his life and the time the book got written, I'd really have loved to learn that sort of stuff when I read it back in HS, but that is asking quite a lot from our educational system...does anyone know the name of that show, I mean I have always been interested in the politics and economy and social drama that is going on when books get written, just too lazy to actually look for it, besides most of what I find is dry and hard for me to make connections to the writer and the book...... two posts in one day on two different subjects, a first for me, I hope this sort of thing keeps up it's nice to see the list will survive Lawrence PS Movies-The Velvet Goldmine is a great movie, and a phenomenal soundtrack, you should all check it out....Johnny Rhys Myers is quite hot...... There have been lots of women in showbusiness that are and were viable commercially LONG before Lilith Fair came into being. Ever heard of Stevie Nicks? Gladys Knight? Courtney Love? Mary J. Blige? Reba McEntire? Dolly Parton, Madonna, Wendy O. Williams, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey? Lilith Fair's big "oh poor women, we're so oppressed" deal is nothing but a marketing ploy. And you fell for it hook, line, and sinker. As far as your whole little spiel about "men and how they control the music business" goes, I don't buy any of it. I can think of some, like Aimee Mann, that deserve (and have gotten) the attention they deserve, but you obviously haven't given any consideration to the thought that perhaps some of the artists (Sarah McLauchlan, Jewel) are just passing fads that have already had their 15 minutes in the spotlight? Funny, seems like a lot of male musicians have experienced the same thing. > > Sexism is WRONG. It is wrong for men to lock out women....it is also wrong > > for women to lock out men. Shari > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> That sounds like this typical virus that you can get from merely visiting "warez" sites. It alters the way Internet Explorer opens and also your home page. The motive is to set up your browser so they can keep opening link after link and spam you to death with about 20 IE windows open at once...and when you close each one it opens another...often they lead to porn sites. This virus takes advantage if a loophole in Microsoft VML (Virtual Machine Code) that was only recently discovered. There is a fix for it at McAfee, and probably one at Symantec (Norton's home site) as well. After you clean it you should go to Microsoft and download the VML patch (or the latest updated VML). It is a good idea to visit Microsoft "Windows Update" often anyway (there is a link in the IE "tools" menu and also one right at the top of your Start menu in Windows). Download any "critical updates" you find there, since they are most often security upgrades for Internet Explorer. ************************* Virus Characteristics: - -- Update October, 5, 2001 -- AVERT has seen an increase in the number of encoded JS/Seeker samples since the release of the 4.1.50 scan engine. This is due to new decoding methods used by the engine. The majority of these samples also exploit a Microsoft virtual machine vulnerability. This trojan alters the default startup and search pages for your web browser. The Windows Scripting Host must be installed for the trojan to run. It is believed that a script generating program may be involved in the creation of this trojan, which allows the author to specify different parameters. As there are many variants of this threat, your personal experiences may vary from those mentioned here. The trojan may arrive as a file named "runme.hta". Opening this file makes several registry changes to your system, such as: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Search_URL HKCU\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Main\Home Page Original registry values are saved to the files "HOMEREG111.REG", "BACKUP1.REG", and "BACKUP2.REG" in the WINDOWS directory. Indications Of Infection: - - Altered startup and search pages when launching web browser - - Presence of "runme.hta", "removeit.hta", or "homereg111.reg" Method Of Infection: Upon execution, new registry values are written to a file named "homereg111.reg"; existing registry values are saved to "backup1.reg", and "backup2.reg". "homereg111.reg" is then imported in to the registry. Finally "removeit.hta" is ran which attempts to delete the file, "C:\WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP\runme.hta". Removal Instructions: Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.- Delete detected files - - Restore desired Internet Explorer Start and Search pages - - Install the Microsoft virtual machine vulnerability patch.
