It's on DVD as well, and is quite a film. For the people who liked Vanilla Sky, you should see "Abre Los Ojos" (Open Your Eyes), if you haven't already - it's the original Spanish film Vanilla Sky is based on, and many consider it better. There is actually going to be a special edition of Memento released on DVD this summer, with commentary by the director. I've held off buying the current release b/c it has been rumored for quite a while. If anyone wants movie recommendations, I have to say the one film that has absolutely stuck out in my mind this year was Va Savoir. It's only playing in 7(!) theaters now, since it's been out a while, but it's coming out on DVD in late Feb - I would recommend everybody check it out, it's just a perfect little film. I haven't seen any movies in the past month - winter break, away from New York and stuck in Ithaca - but from before, I would absolutely recommend No Man's Land, The Devil's Backbone, and second Amelie. Along that line, I would also recommend The City of Lost Children by the same director if you haven't seen it, it's on DVD. And as for the portable DVD player with no screen, check out this thread: http://dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168549&highlight=portable+no+screen wow, long post... Then again. maybe she h doesn't care. It's her preorgative. Might it be called "principal"? One of the things I admire most about Poe is that she stands up for what she believes. Two issues she has strongly spoken out against was sexism and censorship. Your statement about the problem being men and male execs that perpetuated the myth is accurate. So what is the "proper" response? From a financial, self-centered standpoint gave the "big picture" the bird! Walked away from a ton of money and making those male execs happy with middle finger held high against them all! "Not want to do anything" is hardly an accurate portrayal of her response to the issue. She has been vocal and activist to the point of angering those same males that control her fate. But she chooses to do that, to her own detriment, rather then assisting female equivalent of the problem... setting up a female dominated machine and locking out the men. Sexism is WRONG. It is wrong for men to lock out women....it is also wrong for women to lock out men. Oh I suppose you could make the entitlement argument, but a man or woman of principal would reject that argument and say if it is wrong for men to do to women, it is equally wrong for women to do to men. Love the Malcom X creed "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." Poe has chosen to stand up! As for Lilith ... it made a lot of MEN a lot of money. It is a one page publicity pic with a one page article. There are no new pictures and no new information at all. There is a tidbit that probably only very early fans would know about. Poe talked about before it in 1995's Much Music's Break This! episdoe. "As a kid I was painfully shy. If someone talked to me I would cry....The album starts out and my dad is asking me, "What is it?" and I'm crying. The album is full of emotion." Other than that, the rest of it is stuff you can read elsewhere. And the article itself will probably be up on Rockrgrl's site eventually. I do recommend picking up the mag if you like the other grrls interviewed in it. - --Michele http://www.shellE.org/ Home of PsYcHovixen, Poe documents (including the Poe discography), Garbage and Poe trading, eXej, 12 Rounds, Mono, and Exploration Z: A Haunted House Of Leaves Alternate Universe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 16:40:44 -0800 (PST) From: Rachel Proud Subject: Re: NPR: very not poe related at all.. actually nothing about poe in this message.. I'm echoing some of whats already been said, but here goes: POE is coming from a very human perspective. Not female, not male, but human. This seems to be a philosophy she lives her life by, and that is one of the many reasons I love her so much. I seem to remember someone saying something (perhaps it was on the bbs) about how some major radio stations don't play her because she isn't commericial enough. Here in GA, the radio station most likely to play her, 99x is typically male dominated music. The 80's program at noon plays a good mix of female artists, but its an hour a day. I digress... POE has been able to do the things shes done by not "Selling out" to commercial execs. She has made choices that make things a bit tougher for her, but are the right thing to do. Most people only do the right thing when its convienient. What makes POE who she is this humanistic philosophy and not being afraid to speak her mind, especially when it comes to sexism (of either kind) and censorship. So I wouldn't say she doesn't care about Lilith Fair's "agenda" atleast not in that she thinks its beneath her. Music IS for everyone. Let the other artists flock to that banner, I think POE is justified and just fine right where she is. *going back into lurking, for now* Derek ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 20:04:37 EST From: LiveThruThisVow@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: very not poe related at all.. actually nothing about poe in this mes... Speaking of Valentine's Day, I wrote a stupid little pessimistic poem about it: "Ode to Hallmark" Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day... How dare you go astray from Hallmark's favorite day. Birthdays are all right, and Mother's Day is so so, But it is Valentine's Day that makes those money-guzzling bastards go loco. Whether it's cards with hearts or a fuzzy stuffed cub, There's no need for a card company to tell me I'm in love. What does Hallmark provide for people who don't have a Valentine? A TV channel with movies with titles such as "Clarissa's First Kiss" and "Will You Be Mine?" You may think it comforting, but Hallmark's little trick up it's sleeve: The movies will make you wish for a significant other... that is their tease. They want you to find a lover so you'll buy their cards and gifts. "Hallmark is what will make your lover's heart tick!" If you want any wise advice for Valentine's Day, Remember that it is your company and time, not chocolate or gifts, that will make your loved one's day. I loved Vanilla Sky and am very nit-picky about movies that are coming out right about now. It was great, I had no idea Tom Cruise helped produce it. There was also a Leftfield song in the club scene I believe. You know what's bullshit? This morning I got a speeding ticket for speeding in my own school zone which was kind of funny, but this one girl got pulled over speeding as much as I did and they LET HER GO! Without a ticket! Perhaps it was her innocent blond hair/blue eyes look going on and although she said she didn't cry she had to have cried. Anyway they knew I went to the same school cuz I had my uniform on. Like I'd give a shit if I ran over some dumb kid for my school. The whole day I've been singing fuck tha police fuck-fuck-fuck tha police. Uh yeah :) Peace, MeLissA ~*~ Look into his eyes and you shall see why everything is quiet and nothing's free.
