Others may not. It is an article I found in the Dallas Morning News about a country musician that also was affected by Atlantic Records issues. I have copied and pasted the text of the article below. Singer endures adversity to get CD out Closing of country artist's initial label didn't stop him 01/02/2002 By KATHY A. GOOLSBY / The Dallas Morning News As 2001 dawned, Arlington native Tim Rushlow was flying high, both literally and figuratively. Three years after the amicable breakup of the highly successful country band Little Texas, the group's former lead singer was about to release his first solo album. The self-titled compact disc's first single, "She Misses Him," had been released in November 2000 and still was climbing the music charts. "I was riding a Top 10 hit, I had just finished a 16-week radio tour, my album was about to hit the stores, and I was on a plane on my way to attend the American Country Music Awards in Los Angeles," said Mr. Rushlow, 35, who lives in Nashville, Tenn. "I felt like I'd just reinvented myself, that I'd shown I'm not just the guy who sang in Little Texas, and I was excited." But somewhere over the Arizona skies, Mr. Rushlow received a cellphone message to call his manager, Christy DiNapoli. He made the call during a layover in Phoenix - and everything changed. "He said, 'The song's doing great, the album's ready to be shipped, and by the way, your record label closed their door today,' " Mr. Rushlow said. "I was shocked." Atlantic Records didn't go out of business, said Gary Conway, manager of marketing and promotions at Scream Recordings in Nashville. The company just closed its Nashville office, leaving Mr. Rushlow without a label. The 1985 graduate of Martin High School didn't panic. With his ballad about a couple dealing with Alzheimer's disease playing on radio stations across the country, he knew he had some breathing room. "If your label's going away, let them go away when you have a big hit," Mr. Rushlow said. "Atlantic had shipped 50,000 albums just before they closed, and those all sold, which leads me to believe if they had shipped half a million, we'd have sold out of those, too." At a time when Mr. Rushlow should have been out promoting his CD, he was faced with the problem of getting his product into stores. Several major labels came knocking, he said, but he wasn't happy with the deals they offered. "We had three record labels that wanted to cut a deal, but they wanted me to scratch the album I had just spent two years working on," Mr. Rushlow said. "I told them, 'I have an all-star producer [David Malloy], and this album has a Top 10 hit on it. Why not put your label on it?' But they like to start from scratch." He turned to an old friend, Doug Grau, who had produced albums for Little Texas. Mr. Grau is president of Scream Marketing, which produces comedy recordings on its independent label. "Scream Recordings basically signed Tim and purchased the masters to Tim's album," Mr. Conway said. "I know [Atlantic] did an initial shipment, then shipped more just before they closed the door, but I don't have any exact numbers. The plan is, as Atlantic's CD sells out, Scream Recordings' distribution will kick in and start filling the shelves." That will happen in January, when the Scream label officially releases Mr. Rushlow's CD under the new name Crazy Life. It also will include a new song, "As Real as Forever." To maintain the momentum of Mr. Rushlow's initial success with "She Misses Him," Scream Recordings released the single "Crazy Life" late in summer 2001. "We had about a third to half the stations spinning it. It was growing and moving up the charts, then the September 11th tragedy happened," Mr. Conway said. "What that did to music all across the board was unfortunate. "Our song didn't get a fair shot because the songs they were least familiar with went by the wayside, but that's not by any means a complaint on our part. We understood." A third single was released Nov. 12, renamed "Love, Will" on the new CD from its previous title, "The Package." "I went back to my original name on the song," said Mr. Rushlow, who wrote the song. "I changed the title back to 'Love, Will' after the anthrax thing. I didn't want to give anyone an excuse not to play it." He and his band recently completed more than 90 tour dates to promote the song and the CD. It's been exhausting, he said, but he knew rebuilding a career after Little Texas would take immense effort, and he's not afraid of hard work. Despite the setbacks, Mr. Rushlow remains upbeat about his solo career. His father, Arlington businessman Tom Rushlow, said his son believes he was lucky to have a second shot at a successful music career. "He said a lot of people don't get a first one, so his spirits are still very high," the elder Mr. Rushlow said. "He's very strong in his faith, and he believes everything happens for a reason." Even before Mr. Rushlow recorded his solo album, he could be heard on commercials singing, "Ford is the best in Texas," to the tune of Little Texas' biggest hit "God Blessed Texas." Mr. Rushlow said the exposure gained from the commercials, which are still running, was invaluable - but he doesn't intend to be known simply as the Ford guy. He plans to continue promoting his CD, he said, and is already thinking about songs for his next album. "A lot of artists, when it doesn't work, tuck their heads down and leave," Mr. Rushlow said. "If I'd had three albums come out with four or five hits, maybe I'd say it was time to cash it in. But I think I've got a string of albums in me and a 'best of' album ahead of me. "Trust me, I'm not going anywhere." ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V7 #1 *********************************
