Bell" Subject: NPR: Re: Down with John Ashcroft! Actually, part of this is incorrect. John Ashcroft is not a *lawmaker*. John Ashcroft cannot, arbitrarily or otherwise, decide who "looks underage" or what a "sexual situation" is. He can support such a bill, and support criteria for these items, and even lobby for them. Actors and actresses who are under the age of 18 cannot be depicted in sexual intercourse, even if no sex is actually occurring. However, this is a strict interpretation, which is why Thora Birch was allowed to appear topless AND in bed with a nude costar in "American Beauty" at the age of 17. There are no arbitrary decisions... the MPAA has guidelines handed down to them as to what constitutes "sex". - -jb Gomer Goes to Hollywood... I agree that the law in question, the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996, should be struct down as unconstitutional. This "blame-Ashcroft-for-all-of-it" thing is a bit bizarre, though. The law was passed by congress in 1996 and signed by President Clinton. This very lawsuit was Reno v. Free Speech Coalition for most of its lifetime, including when the DOJ appealed it to the supreme court after having lost in federal appeals court. > Alert your senators and house representatives. But first, you might check to see if they voted for the bill that included it. It passed 84-15 and 370-37, so it's likely they did. http://www.senate.gov/legislative/vote1042/vote_00302.html http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.exe?year=1996&rollnumber=455 Ashcroft has done enough on his own, he doesn't need to be blamed for other people's failures too. - -- Actually, a smallish number of people with strong opinions and mind control powers would probably be the simplest possible explanation for the gun control debate, which typically involves critical reasoning diluted to near- homeopathic levels. -- Chad R.
