The Http://TulipSweet.Com web site does not offer anything at this time, but I promise tracking down some music by "Tulip Sweet" will be worth your time. I offer this article I found to give you an idea of what this artist is about. Tulip Sweet and her Trail of Tears http://www.pioneerplanet.com/justgo/scene/0623tulip.htm Tulip Sweet and her Trail of Tears Steph Dickson, a.k.a. Tulip Sweet, returned to the Twin Cities after a year in New York Personnel Steph Dickson, vocals; Dave Wiegardt, drums; Andy McCormick, bass/saw; Tom Siler, keyboards/guitar Background Steph Dickson, a.k.a. Tulip Sweet, has been involved with the local music scene for almost nine years. When her eclectic band Bean Girl split up a few years ago, Dickson started Tulip Sweet and her Trail of Tears. The band went from playing small gigs at the Clown Lounge in the basement of the Turf Club to more high-profile shows including opening for Jim Carroll, a show where Dickson roller skated around the stage and told a story about her first kiss with a farm boy from Ohio. Last year, Dickson thought it would be interesting to move to New York. She packed up and shipped off to Brooklyn for a year performing her act at clubs and gaining a following. This spring, she moved back to Minneapolis and put together the current line-up of Tulip Sweet, which features the Odd's frontman Tom Siler, Ten Ton Bridge drummer Dave Wiegardt and Larmes de Colere saw player Andy McCormick. Recordings The band is almost done recording their first full-length CD. They are hoping for a late summer release for their self-titled debut that features a collection of 11 songs. Concept "I like theatrical things,'' says Dickson. "I think the worst crime in the world is to be boring and I really don't like to see a band that plays like no one is watching. I just want people to have fun, dance and laugh. I don't care if they are laughing at me, for me or against me. I just want something to happen. I want people to feel sex appeal and I want people to dance and make-out with someone when they hear my music. I'm a social beast of the night.'' Review Anything can happen at a Tulip Sweet show. First off, there's the lioness Dickson, who can command a room in just seconds with her highly charged stage antics. Whether she's dressed up in an animal costume or tight leather pants, her body movements are enough to kidnap the eyes of the crowd. She wiggles and thrusts around the stage, while singing provocative lyrics that produce contagious smiles. Her quirky, charming demeanor makes her songs even more insightful, sometimes even embarrassing until you see that Dickson doesn't care what you think or how she looks. It's a peculiar performance led by an unstoppable woman, and you can never be quite sure where it's going to end. Her band keeps a low profile, producing tight sounds and letting Dickson have plenty of freedom to do her thing. Dickson's deep vocals, which have a tendency to sound interestingly goofy and monotone, deliver bizarre mini-stories about puppet shows for two, sneaking out of your parents' house to get loaded, parties in her pants and her obsession with bad boys. Sometimes the content of the unapologetic tales is enough to make the listener squeamish one minute and easing into laughter the next. Random Fact Jonathan Richman is a huge fan of Dickson's since her days in Bean Girl. When she was living in Brooklyn, he sent a limo to pick her up and bring her to the recording studio where she did some vocal tracks for his album, "I'm So Confused.'' Dickson also got a big thrill when she met former Car Ric Ocasek, who produced Richman's album that day. - -- AMY CARLSON,SPECIAL TO THE PIONEER PRESS sp00k etc ... Devil's food with white cream cheese frosting. We took red decorating icing and wrote "POE" (the O had a star inside) and took like 20 pictures of it. As soon as we get the pictures developed, and I find time to run to my uncle's and scan them in, I can share! I got there early and got great seats, which I was very glad for. The place was packed, maybe not sold out, but it looked tight up front. I have been to quite a few shows at the Boardwalk and this was easily the LOUDEST crowd I have experienced there, louder than the band at times. Poe told us we were the loudest, then later, the SICKEST crowd they had so far, I was so proud! It was very evident that Poe could afford to come here more often. The set list was pretty much the same as the other shows, with only one encore, no 'That Day'. But, the news about George Harrison passing had just come out that day, and Poe did a tribute! Part way through 'Fly Away' she broke into a medley of 'Here Comes The Sun', 'Something', and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' which she changed all the lyrics to, as if it was being sung to his widow "Now that his soul gently sleeps" bening part of it. It was very touching. Having seen her also in '96 I knew I'd be missing Cameron, and I did, but it was still a terrific show. She has such a great and positive energy about her. Both my friends that I brought were very impressed. I got to meet Siggy and Daris. When I asked Daris to sign my Westwood One Live at the Whiskey cd, he looked at it and said 'What is this, can you make me a copy? I couldn't believe a)that he didn't already have it, and b)that no other Psycho has already done this! I waited outside the bus to try and meet Poe but there just wasn't time. Before the Bus took off though, Craig brought out a couple autographed napkins, of which I got one, thanks Craig!. I waited five years to see Poe live again and was not disappointed in the least. All I can say is, let's all hope it's not another five years before she tours again! Jim Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Yahoo!
