[Ducky015@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 02:15:45 -0500 From: Derek Benton Subject: Greetings Hey there! My name is Derek and I am from Florissant, Missouri originally, but I've lived in Kennesaw, Georgia for 16 years now. I am 23 and I first heard POE on 99x here in Atlanta (which played "Hey Pretty" for a whopping 2-3 months during the summer/spring and I haven't heard anything since...meanwhile the continue to play just about every damn Staind song 4-6 time daily...err *ahem* but I'm not bitter....>:/ ) The first POE song I heard was "Angry Johnny" and I fell in love with it...even more so when I realized what it was really about. I bought the album and was entranced from "Hello" all the way to "Fly Away". I still get that way when I listen to it. And her second album I dare say is even more powerful, IMHO, but that's because of the story it tells from start to finish. Let's see, other artists I like. Well, I love Bjork's earlier stuff, I haven't really heard much of her more recent stuff, actually I haven't heard anything after Post, so there ya go. Her Sugarcubes stuff is good though. Let's see, who else...I like what I've heard of Ani DiFranco, I really like Tori Amos..especially "Little Earthquakes". I have pretty varied tastes in music, but then, nowadays, who doesn't? I'll listen to just about anything if it sounds good to me. P(*)E is definitely my favorite artist though, and I am weird in that I have difficulty in choosing ONE favorite above others. Well, I'm happy to be back on the AP list. I was on a long time ago, but I couldn't keep up with all the mail at the time. Getting 355 messages a day was a bit much, considering the other lists I was on. Anything else, just ask. I'm a pretty open person. Jamiroquai - Little L Okay, so you either loved or hated Virtual Insanity...granted. But I positively guarantee that you will dig this song. And I'm not just saying this as a kid of the eighties, this song just...mmph...does it, does it right. 2. System Of A Down - Chop Suey Actually, I'm sure most of you have heard this song by now, because, yes, it's just that awesome. Yet another song that just has the right thing going. 3. Shakira - Suerte This song is the Spanish version of her song "Whatever, Whenever," now gaining popularity. This is another song I'm sure most of you have at least heard, if not enjoyed. The Spanish version is WAY better! I don't even understand a word she's saying and I like it better. And if you do understand Spanish, kudos. 4. Tenacious D - Wonderboy This is a great song. Who knew Jack Black could sing so well? 5. Aphex Twin - Girl-Boy Song This is a great blend of crazy techno synth drums with light bouncy music. The marriage of almost complete opposite sounds creates a unique sense of harmony. Personally this song really relaxes me, it almost taps into different angles of my persona. 6. Barenaked Ladies - Sell Sell Sell This one's a tough call. I played it for a friend to get her opinion. She said, "Dave, you are weird." Okay...but its a neat song right?? I love the style, and can't get enough of the sound. Hey send me your opinion. As long is its not, "Dave, you are weird," I ALREADY KNOW!!!! 7. R.E.M. - All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star) Don't you just REM? This song is so uplifting! Even if you have no intention of "being a star," the song speaks to you, makes you feel good. This is a great song for those of you out there, (you know who you are) who wanted more of the "Shiny Happy People" Michael Stipe. 8. Enigma - Gravity Of Love Okay, I know, everyone already loves Enigma, so this recommendation goes without saying. But I just had to tag this on the list. This song kicks sooooo much ass. Okay that's it for now, except to say to everyone, "If you buy one CD this year (besides Poe's next, :) Get the Gorillaz CD. Every single track on that friggin CD is a work of art." Wow, what a great time last night! Poe is so totally suited to a small venue. The Engine Room capacity was 620 people, I believe, and it was total energy! The set list was: (Star Wars intro) Hello Choking the Cherry Beautiful Girl Dolphin Hey Pretty Walk the Walk Trigger Happy Jack Angry Johnny (with Mr. Rogers intro) Haunted Fly Away Wild Encore: That Day (band version!) Control 5-1/2 Minute Hallway I don't want to elaborate much on the show itself, as I'd rather you all enter "untainted" into your own Poe experience! However, we did hang out at the bus after the show, and had the opportunity to talk with Daris, Nate, Andrew, Siggy (briefly), and then the lovely Poe! Mad props to all the APs I met last night: Brett, Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer, Jen (yes, there were four!), Mike, Matthew, Nathan, Tara, Tyler, Carrie, Hoover and all their friends! Meeting you guys is what makes all worthwhile...AP's rock! Also, congrats to Brett and Matthew for successfully avoiding tow and impound fees (BARELY), and to Nathan for scoring Nate's drumstick! To Matthew, for having the most FABU blue metallic nail polish. And to Mike, for braving the crowd and delivering a fresh Long Island tea to me without a single drop spilled (what coordination!)
