This contract means that a man should be free to do whatever he wants, SO LONG AS THIS DOES NOT HARM ANOTHER. Freedom of speech is protected absolutely as long as it falls under this heading. For instance, one is NOT free to make threats to another. That is a form of extreme 'speech' that is NOT protected. By the same line of thinking, one can say that speech that is OFFENSIVE (this definition being made by the majority vote in democratic societies), is NOT protected, because it is HARMFUL to others. ALSO, one will find that when there is an private organization involved, the persons running that organization can make their own rules regarding what is tolerated. Organizations such as AOL have their Terms Of Service, which allow them to deny service to people using vulgar language. This is a legal fact. For someone to willfully and brazenly thwart one of the original rules of the AP list, that is the 'NPR rule', would seem reason in itself for action to be taken by those running the list. That action would be entirely within their rights, since those who try purposefully to offend other members have violated the rights of those members. That is something that is NOT covered by 'freedom of speech'. Period. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 02:58:31 -0400 From: angie Subject: Re: Visit my website visit my website visit my website I haven't done anything fancy on the street yet (YET)---cool graphic on the front page Jarrod. I had not thought of it in THAT way, and I don't think the Poe management people that asked about it did either. It is a point VERY well taken and I will forward your message, if that is OK with you, to Paul Fishkin. My take, and I believe his, was that we each as individuals need to take Control of our lives and our feelings and even though they may have been injured and we have suffered loss that we can take control of our destiny and come out with a stronger world then we had before. Not for a MOMENT did I consider it talking to us as a nation or as a threat, rather as an empowerment. I can see your point though and I think it WOULD need to be considered! (1) Who you are? My name is Jim. I'm a junior at UW Madison. (2) Where you're from? I'm from Racine, an obscure city in Wisconsin, but I now live in Madison. (3) How old you are? 20, but I'll be 21 in only about 2 months. I'm very excited. (4) Where you first heard Poe? I first heard her on the radio way back when Angry Johnny was played, but I never really listened to her until this year, when I hear Hey Pretty on the radio, and soon thereafter discovered Haunted. Needless to say, I soon became addicted to her music, and collected as many of her songs as I possibly could. (5) What other musicians do you listen to? Madonna (who was my favorite female artist before I discovered Poe), Garbage (and Angelfish, the band that Shirley Manson was in before Garbage), No Doubt, Amanda Ghost, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Heather Nova, Aimee Mann, Alanis, Sheryl Crow, Dido, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Enya, The Mamas and the Papas, and I love musicals: Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Moulin Rouge!, etc. (6) Any other interesting information you wish to share? I'm a huge Seinfeld fanatic. I have nearly every episode on tape. I really love Moulin Rouge!, The Others and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. These are all movies that you all really need to see because I know you'd love them, especially Hedwig. Despite the odd title, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Poe in concert yet, nor Garbage, but I can die happy once I see both of them. I did fulfill one of my major lifetime goals this August, though, when I got to see Madonna in concert. I'm very excited to be an Angry Psycho. This is such an awesome group of people, and I love Poe lots. I really hope this radio campaign works. Wild is one of my favorite songs from Haunted and I want everyone to hear it.
