You know that I love you, but yeah. I partially agree with you...it doesn't erase our history. BUT, it can change the future...and I think that's what we need to focus on. And I think that's the point of people circulating that poem. I think for the first time in our generation...possibly EVER....absolutely EVERYONE in this country knows what it's like to be in a minority group. Suddenly last Tuesday, we all learned that just being born can cause people to hate you. Falwell and Robertson and people like them hate me because I'm a card-carrying ACLU member, and a liberal, pro-choice, feminist lesbian...but their predjudices have been almost unanimously rejected by the general public this week. How fucking amazing is that????????? If we can keep that going...we'll live in an even better country than before. I've been writing thoughts to my friends and family this week, and I've been reminding all of them how small and truly petty our prejudices toward other people are. It's a shame that it took something like this to put it in perspective...but even my conservative relatives wrote me back and said that I was right. That is miraculous. I honestly think that if we don't become complacent...this country is going to be entirely different in the best way possible. I don't think that poem necessarily depicts how we are, but I think it IS how we COULD BE if we move forward correctly...and I don't think we should piss on that possibility. ~Mis ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 01:47:29 EDT From: LivTheMdns@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: article by Afghan born American.. Some opinions of mine here (everyone, start ignoring). I don't blame the muslims for the actions of this one man and his followers. This is a group of people where they rise to the level of their insanity. It's not the muslims you should associate them with, it's territorial religious nutjobs who need to be controlled. Blaming Islam for WTC is as ridiculous as blaming Christianity for the bombing of a family planning clinic. Religious extremeists are the ones to blame, Bin Laden and his bunch are no different than a bunch of buck-tooth-bible-thumping-shotgun-carrying yahoos in Montana who shoot on sight anybody who happens to wander across their property. Bin Laden thinks anyone who is not islamic is a tresspasser when they enter the middle east. He hates americans because we "tresspassed" in saudi arabia during the gulf war. He can write off the fact that we were invited to defend them because his grip on reality is about as strong as Bill Clinton's grip on monogamy. The Afghan-American writer is more correct in his view of the Taliban as being like the nazis than you'd think. A war torn country, it's infrastructure in shambles from years of long, hard conflict suddenly gets a ruling party. This ruling party picks a scapegoat group and starts persecuting them. They whip the people into a righteous ferver to keep them under their control, beliveing that everyone else is out to get them, and that they are the ones who are slated to inherit the earth. Eventually, the country is segregated, all the members of the "good" group move about with impunity, abusing those of the "subhumans". Eventually, those in the "subhuman" groups are required to wear distinctive bands and patches for "their own protection". Old historical edifices of some of these persecuted groups are wiped out for good. Germany: In debt and decimated from WWI gave power to a madman, Hitler, who blamed several groups (Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Communists, I could go on) for all of Germany's problems. I'll use the Jews and Homosexuals as the examples here, Jews were stripped of property, forced to wear yellow stars, synagogues were ransacked. Homosexuals were forced to wear pink triangles (I think they were pink) and were also subjected to similar treatment. Afghanistan: The country a wreck after several years of war, the previous leader was hanged from a streetlight in Kabul, his body mutilated. The taliban takes over (with help from the US) along with mujahedin rebels who fought the soviets in the name of Islam. Bin Laden was one of these rebels, he brought funds and construction equipment. He was almost shot by a soviet helicopter which strafed his bulldozer as he tried to cut a trench. The taliban eventually takes control of 90% of the country, and now has the Northern Alliance on the run. They dynamite ancient buddist statues carved into a mountain side because they are a "foreign influence". Hindus still residing in the country now are forced to wear yellow bands on their arms to identify them as outside influences. The leader of the country is believed to have met only two non-Islamics in his life. Now I'm wondering how long it will be before they start to annex pakistan for the sake of "uniting arab speaking people, and islamic fundamentalists" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 22:45:10 -0400 From: "sp00k@poe.org" Subject: test test ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 07:14:55 -0400 From: angie Subject: Re: LA DVD/Video Shoot?
