My name is Stacy and I just subbed to the digest, and I'm also in Michigan. Flint area, really, but my gf lives in the Detroit area and I'm there much of the time, also. She's not on the list but she's a fan of Poe too. We caught her open for DM and she was GREAT ... and very spot-her-from-a-mile-away PINK! Great show, I'd love to see her solo in a small, intimate venue sometime. Ok, carry on. I was inspired by those funkadelic flyers already in existence to make smaller flyers that can more easily fit on store counters. Oh, yes. When I saw "Mooney High School Band Performance..." on a little tiny flyer-like card at the JC Penney(Penny?) counter, I decided to make the same size flyers for the Angry Psychos and put 'em all over the place. Well, I made them, but, uh... Does anyone object, first of all, to this mass invasion of the stores? As for the places I can put these... I'm fairly sure today I have friends working at Suncoast, Hot Topic (ahaha... ha.), and Waves which is, conveniently, a music store. I'll try for other stores. You never know about the power of my ass. - -Bridget ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 13:57:38 -0400 From: "sp00k@poe.org" Subject: NPR: haPPy B-day IBM & Bill ! U.S.News 8/20/01 How IBM's PC made Microsoft By Paul Andrews http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/010820/biztech/pc.htm The world that the IBM PC was born into 20 years ago-on Aug. 12, 1981-bore an uncanny resemblance to today's landscape: The technology industry was ruled by a feared and vilified colossus under constant antitrust scrutiny. The difference is that mighty IBM, once besieged by the government and competitors, has fallen from dominance, while its partner in the PC project, a tiny, 30-person enterprise named Microsoft, is now the embattled Goliath. But for a brief moment, they collaborated to produce the computer revolution's breakthrough device, helping to alter the way humans work and communicate. The focus of their effort was a humble machine even by 1981 standards. Containing a slow Intel chip, it shipped with just 16 kilobytes of memory-a user needed to double that just to be able to run DOS, the Microsoft operating system required to make the computer do just about anything. Although the keyboard and central processor cost $1,565, the price quickly ballooned with the addition of a monochrome monitor, added memory, a printer, disk drive, and DOS. A fully equipped color version cost over $5,000-pricey compared with the $1,500-to-$2,000 Apple II and hobbyist computers on the market. All of this for an untested small-business and home market that IBM guessed would top out at fewer than a quarter million units over five years. Instead, the PC proved an instant hit, as some 200,000 were snapped up in 1982 alone and 850,000 the following year.
