So basically we're forced to suffer through the inane ramblings of morons such as Kane and Cabby when the best thing those two dopes could do for their careers would be to shut the hell up and play the music! Subject: So there it be... Greetings psychos. I believe I am probably the newest psycho on the list and I'd like to introduce myself. I have been living the psycho life vicariously through my friend and room mate Alex. I got to meet Dan and a few other psychos at the most recent Poe (Depeche Mode headlined) event at the Rose Garden as well as the record signing (I was the guy with the Chinese characters tattooed to his forearms). I got way lucky and Poe signed my backup copy of Hello, it's worth me taking a picture of it. She was like, why does it say Verbatim on it? It's funny because it is a legit backup - my ex destroyed the original and luckily I had made a backup of the original. So when it was my turn to have her sign something - I brought up my CD of Hello (original jewel case) and her publicist guy looked at me like I must be kidding when I opened the case. She seemed to love it and drew all over it then signed it. The hook that made me a Poe fan is sort of a tangential one. I have spent the past 11 years in the "digital underground" of sorts and ended up heading up one of the larger hacking groups on the net, since then I've dawned a grayish white hat and hung my black hat. Anyway, back in "the day" of BBS systems etc - I really got my start. I hung out with guys of the Cult of the Dead Cow and even M.O.D. - I still have my 300 baud audio coupler. Anyway, it was when I heard "Hello" and heard "M.O.D. are you out there..." that I freaked. Something called to me on a level that was akin to a time and place dear to me. It was the draw - pulled me in and I nearly wore (kidding) out my CD of Hello. Haunted came out and of course I got that too. Since Hello came out - I've circulated some of the lyrics to other people from the "old school" and most have gone and bought the CD's for themselves. There really aren't that many songs or bands that recognize the hacking/cracking community. During the record signing - I told Poe that I knew a few of the guys from M.O.D. Her eyes lit up a bit - and she wrote "M.O.D. I guess I finally found a lead..." on my copy of Hello. I also gave her a url for one of the biggest hacking get togethers in the world, http://www.Defcon.org - I think it would be amazing if she could perform there but that's only really a pipe dream. She wrote it down though - so you never know. Anyway - this is why I'm psycho. Glad to be here. So how do you market an artist who already has been shut out of that medium? The singer Poe and her record company, Atlantic, wrestled with that one and came up with a strategy that, starting eight months later, has begun to pay off. Six years ago, this serious-minded singer-songwriter had a neo-feminist hit with the song "Angry John," which helped her debut album, "Hello," sell more than 660,000 copies. But when she finally delivered a followup, "Haunted," in October, Atlantic had grave concerns. "There was fear about the long time away," explains executive veep Ron Shapiro. Worse, in the meantime, "Alternative [Rock] radio had finished dealing with female artists." Their solution? The Internet and - gasp! - bookstores. "[Poe] was one of the first artists [whose sales were] driven by the Internet, back in '95, when that marketing wasn't significant," Shapiro says. It still isn't. You can hit No. 1 on Billboard's Internet chart by selling as few as 1,000 albums a week via that route. But by heavily promoting "Haunted" through the Web outlet Real Networks, Shapiro says the album moved its first 100,000 copies. It got another boost from a tour of Borders bookstores organized by Atlantic and Pantheon Books, publisher of "House of Leaves," the latest novel from Poe's brother, Mark Danielewski. The work of both siblings reflects their troubled relationship with their stern father, who died in 1991. A probingly psychological work, "Haunted," includes tapes of their father's voice laced throughout its catchy alterna-pop songs. "Poe is a very intellectual sort of musician who's obsessed with sound," Shapiro says. "It affects the kind of people who are Internet-savvy." In other words, it helps to be a geek. With that fan base, Atlantic brought a remix of the song "Hey Pretty" to radio, where it earned enough Modern Rock play to reach No. 13 on that chart. This helped Poe land the opening slot on Depeche Mode's current tour. "Every alternative act wanted that," Shapiro says. Right before that happened, Poe's album had been scanning about 5,000 albums a week, just under the figure needed to crack Billboard's Top 200. But eight weeks ago, the tally grew to about 7,000, putting it on the chart. To date, "Haunted" has sold slightly more than 230,000 copies. Shapiro says they're still not aggressively going after radio, and the way Atlantic and Poe had sold "Haunted" so far has had another advantage. Relatively speaking, says Shapiro, "it's dirt-cheap." It involves some luck, some patience and perhaps a few scraps of info. You are not the be all and end all of POE or this list. So take your threats wrap then in a blanket a cuddle up with them, it will not be the end of my world if I don't get to meet POE. When your last name is "ticketmaster" then I will be scared. >> _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 15:18:37 EDT From: CrazyasDeLuca@aol.com Subject: Re: mark is hot fan club Hmm, This is true. Hey~ I have been away for almost a week now and I come back to find this.... its truly disgusts me, About a month ago I ordered a shirt and paid for it right away even before it was made. I said I would pick it up at the Rock Hall Show but unfortunately I wasn't able to go and I am still waiting for it, I know its out there somewhere. But that's not the point. Right before the Rock Hall Show I was telling my parents about how wonderful and trustworthy the APs were because many of you offered me a ride to the actual show, and I am sooooo glad that they refused to let me go. I am not completely upset with everyone because I know there are good people out there, but it just disappoints me that my parents were right and that some people can't be trusted no matter how good you think they are. Pay now or be condemed to Hell... I am still hoping that I will get my shirt one day, tho.... - -big ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 15:51:22 -0400 From: "Frank Mojica" Subject: }-{ello my future girlfriend Everyone MUST click this: http://www.geocities.com/senordingdong2/Michael/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 14:54:50 -0500 From: "Anfrey Cheng" Subject: Re: mark is hot fan club > Hmm, > This is true. The preoccupatiuoin with superficial physical appearance (of females) is merely something attributed to male Chauvinists...it isn't Chauvinistic by itself. Besides, all the grrrls on the list know from reading House of Leaves that, not only is Mark brilliant, he is horny...and not only is he horny, he knows what to do with "it". This makes him "look" hotter than he might be if he was just some guy walkin' down the street...it isn't all that superficial after all. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 16:55:35 EDT From: Dan98908@aol.com Subject: Re: An Apology to Julie And a message 4 the rest In a message dated 8/4/2001 11:35:32 AM Pacific Daylight Time, EMOKidsSmell@aol.com writes: > Dan has done SO much for me. I appreciate the kind words from everyone, but Jamie and I have talked and I think she has the message. Everything is kewl now. I think it took a lot of guts to come out in the open on the list and admit you made a mistake like she did. And it is commendable that she is making it right with Julie. I think she knows now that she did not need the rest of the post. But we have worked it out and I hope as a list we can be glad for the good thing she did and be quick to forgive the errors. Everything that I have done I have done because, as a group, you guys have blown me away by how loving and caring you ALL are ( for the most part anyway...)
