Both bands have a sinister vibe, yet that vibe is oh so different. I got out of my car in the parking field and asked the first person I saw, "Are you here for Poe?" As if I had just prodded her with a sharp stick, the platinum-blonde smoking waif girl replied, "Depeche Mode! You kidding? Who vud drive all ziss way just for POE?" Can you say "ouch" boys and girls? Behold the DM elite. They might be somewhat gothic, but they sure aren't apathetic about what they like. I wonder if the widespread foreign accent is real or if it's a requirement for liking DM! :) Anyway, this accented girl (from Canada) went on to say how she was following DM to Europe to see them all over Poland and Germany, how she wrote a book about DM, how she has a $4,000 camera that she uses to photograph them. Lover of music that I am, I was impressed with this girl's devotion to the band, and said, "Wow, a dedicated fan!" She shrugged and smiled and said, "Ont you?" "Of course," I replied, "Why else would I drive all ziss way just for POE?" :) Hello hello? THE GORGE! The crowd was full of vampires, and an occasional Poe fan. The physical breakdown was an interesting mixture of very overweight redneck vampires and perfectly-chiseled model vampires. It's like Depeche Mode has had an equal influence on the closely-related worlds of fashion modeling and the undead. 50% genuine gothic Euros, 50% wannabe-Euro-trash-Amero-rednecks. Of course the elegance is shattered the instant someone blurts out "Ain't nuff port-a-johns out here!" I was amazed at Poe's soaring voice. It's just as expressive and strong as it is on her albums. That's the other connection between Poe and Depeche Mode - lots of sultry, rich vocals. They should duet sometime. Nothing like a 250-lb. woman wearing fishnet stockings, a black feather boa, dark red velvet, black lipstick/mascara, and a spiked collar to make you fantasize about the apocalypse. And the DM fans actually scoffed at Poe's outfits. :) I got to meet all of Poe's band members, but she disappeared right after her set, probably to enjoy the beautiful surrounding canyons. The drummer, Nate, thought my graphics were "so fat!" he took them backstage to see if he could find Poe to snag some signatures. But she was g-o-n-e. He did mention that once Depeche leaves America to tour Europe on August 20th, Poe might be coming back to Oregon on the 24th, in which case I'll get another shot. I'm convinced Poe is afraid of Seattle. Poe only got to play FIVE SONGS. Thirty-minute timeslots suck. I was mystified that there were only three fans waiting at the door the band members came through - were the Poe fans really in such short supply? Myself and two other locals, Lorel and Billy, waited until DM's set started before giving up. I would have waited longer, but I forgot to bring my No-Doz and the music was making it really hard to stay awake. ;) Thought Of The Day: unlike Depeche Mode fans, Poe fans really don't have a unifying fashion. It's just not possible to point at someone and say, "Hey! You're here to see Poe!" the way you can say, "Aha! A Depeche Mode fan!" Basic black is available everywhere, and very easy on the eyes. (Poe is very easy on the eyes, too.) If all fans of Poe tried to dress like Poe, the results would be disastrous. Global sales of flaming pants and giant mirror sunglasses would skyrocket. The European fashion world Depeche Mode has capitalized on would collapse. DM fans would sneer at us even more. Fashion designers would drive themselves insane trying to keep up. Magazines would go out of business due to spending all their earnings on printer inks. There would be a worldwide shortage of fabric dyes. Small animals would get scared and run away from us. Nevermind that we'd all go BLIND. :) Plus we'd all have to start working out to get our arms up to par for the sleeveless garments... For the record, before I started seeing Poe wear the skirt-over-pants thing I thought it was tacky. However, like the mindless Poe-drone that I am, I now think that it's so-ooo rocking for us narrow-hipped people. Buahaha. I don't know what car the commercial is for, but there's this song in it and I can't remember who sings it. It goes "all I wanna do is thank you even though I don't know who you are" then there's some line about changing lanes "while I'm driving in my car" then it busts into the chorus that goes "who whoever you are, I wanna thank you who, whoever you are." Yeah... so if anyone knows ANYTHING about it, can you write me back? I've been to soooo many concerts (most of which are not this summer, due to lack of funds. booo.) However, I have two that are definitely pretty close to tied 1. Tori Amos in 1996-this is her famous Boulder show that gets bootlegged a lot-and I was there!!! It was so amazing, words couldn't even begin to describe 2. U2 Elevation tour in 2001-wow. double wow. I saw these guys back for zoo tv back when I was in 8th grade. Granted, it was a good show but NOTHING compared to the pared down gig they're doin now adays. The lighting is amazing and I'd venture to say that u2 are in their prime right now...sometimes seniority does reap brilliancy I also went and saw Green Day this past Friday, there first time in Colorado in something like 7 years, yipes! I had such a great time, they have soooooooo much energy-wow. Anyway!
