I'd be willing to pay a higher price for meals if the servers would be paid a decent wage. I tip well when service is decent or better, or if not so great but I know the server is having a really busy night. However, I do not appreciate being told that there is a minimum amount that must be left. It insults those who do tip appropriately, and goes right over the heads of those who do not. Like any other job, if it is sooooo horrible, why do it? There are plenty of other occupations available that adhere to the minimum wage standards. Like I was always told by my father, if you're not happy then take action to improve the situation. If you don't, you have no right to complain. -brendles- >> i know i'm a week late, but i have been away and working. so yes, i don't know why waiters and waitresses are paid so little. it's probably because of the tips you recieve that are not taken from that thing we call the government LOL. as far as telling people the right "amount" of tipping, i don't. all i know is that it has gone up to 15-20% even. i very rarely get that, if i'm lucky i get 15%. then again, i found out that there are much MORE people that go by the book and tip by that percentage than ones that don't give a flyin sh*t on some nights, and on other nights, you get all the assholes. you can't predict what's going to happen so i just go into work and try my best and give the best service i can for a night. if i'm in a bad mood, or i'm having troubles somewhere else other than the restaurant, i try my hardest to keep it out. that's why there's a kitchen. you walk through the doors after your little "hello, i'm mary sunshine" act and scream all you want. LOL. honestly, there are nights i make myself sick at how nice and perky i'm being. but, why take it out on your customers? as far as doing it even though it's a shitty job? well, i can't say it's a shitty job. it's just there are those nights where you work really hard and you don't get what it was worth. then you feel like you've done all of that for nothing and you feel kinda worthless or whatever. you have those bad people that bascially say "spit on my shoe and clean it" and actually expect you...and so you do, when all you want to do is punch them, or spit in there food (WHICH BY THE WAY TO THE PERSON THAT SAID THAT THIS HAPPENS WHEN THEY RETURN FOOD OR WHATEVER...MAN YOU MUST'VE BEEN A HORRIBLE PERSON TO WAIT ON IF YOU GOT THAT OR THINK YOU'RE GOING TO...I'D NEVER DO THAT!) or spill your tray of hot coffee on them. then you have those days or those few tables that night were people make you feel like your the best damn thing in the world. i had that the other night. i was working a very busy thrusday night, with just having two fights (one with the boss, the other with a chick i work with), and had this table of two men that told my boss when i was done how great i was. THEN had later that night the baseball team (they come in after games) walks in and actually asks to be served by me and only me every thrusday from now on. you feel good. it's an odd compliment. not to mention the hours and such, and YES THE TIPS, can be great for when you go to school, have another job, or just need that extra income. i actually love my job. coming from being just under a year ago, the assistant to a tour manager in NYC at a management and record label, hating every minute i woke up to go there, to this, back home in town. i love it. i have my bad days, i have my great days, i have my "whatever" days. but for right now, i love my job. i make good money, i have lots of friends that are around there and such, and it's just great for me right now. *shrugs* ok enough of this. i'm done. sorry so damn long. *wipes forehead* phew, that was a lot. marianne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 21:47:04 EDT From: JewlyaINAP@aol.com Subject: NPR:Tori SLG Mp3s Hey...I lost the links to the strange little girls mp3s.....can anyone help me out?? Honestly can't remember. Got like 4 from BMG and am still trying to remember what they were. Last CD? Radiohead's Kid A with the hidden booklet behind the CD holder. Got it on ebay for like $13 something with shipping. First concert? Well, I got dragged against my will to a Tiffany concert when I was six, but I don't count that. So I guess Bush, Goo Goo Dolls, and No Doubt at the Hampton Coliseum in February of 1996. Too bad I couldn't see anything in the end from all the smoke (mostly not of the tobacco variety) and I was sick for two days afterwards. It was the night before a field trip to D.C. and I missed it because I was too sick and too tired to go so I stayed home. And I saw two people having sex against a wall. Definitely a night I'll never forget. And the local modern rock station pissed everyone off because they were supposed to give away free t-shirts and they showed up a couple hours before the concert started while everyone was outside waiting for good spots because it was a general admission show, and since EVERYONE mobbed the van, the DJ got pissed and handed out only a couple shirts (I didn't get one) and threw a case of Goo Goo Clusters on the ground and sped off. Great show though. My last concert was Green Day and Superdrag back in November 1997. Wow, long time ago. And I'm making a 3-4 hour trek to see Radiohead at Bull Run and paid $140 for two tickets. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 21:58:20 EDT From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: First concert In a message dated 7/23/2001 6:26:19 PM Eastern Daylight Time, lance.kinney@amd.com writes: > Okay, to make some (not all) of the people feel old, my first concert was > Rush, Signals tour (1983?), both nights, Dallas Reunion Arena. If they can put together a system that has the potential for saving lives, then why not? Or we could dump all that money to save the Suckerfish... <> Iowa's problem. Go to a different school if the curriculum doesn't measure up. <> They redo the budget every single year, analyzing it and making decisions based on how everything is projected. If the projections change, they'll change the tax laws. It's pretty simple. But as it is we ARE being overtaxed. I don't want them getting a dime more of my money than they need. If you want to donate your money to them, go ahead... <> You keep going back to Iowa... Who knows who made decisions for them. That's a State decision, and they have to deal with their own consequences. But just because Iowa screws up, does not mean that this plan is wrong. Iowa has nothing to do with this tax cut. And if the taxpayers end up having to pay it back, well... they got a tax cut, and now the pay the money back later. They had the opportunity to invest that money and make money off of it to cover themselves... As far as the 'recession/depression... it;s all the same'... I agree for the most part, aside from the fact that the Dems have been sucking us dry every chance they've gotten. If people would sit back and relax and let the market do its thing rather than get uptight about reports of 'recession' or 'depression', things would run much more smoothly. The news channels love to run stories that scare people, though, and people react to that, because they live their lives in fear. We wouldn't have so many ups and downs if people would just let the market run itself. It's really pretty simple. But back to the point, the tax cut IS a good idea. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 00:11:18 EDT From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR-AP Nicknames In a message dated 7/24/2001 12:09:49 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Dan98908@aol.com writes: > I just gave a copy of Haunted to a friend in Selah (population 3,200) and > told her she would have to be the SELAPs since SEAPs was already taken. > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > How about SLAPs? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 00:12:49 EDT From: Iamtheher4u@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: First CD The first CD I ever got as a present was Greatest Cartoon Hits. I don't remember it because I was a baby, but my mom insists on telling me "You've seen him in concert" every time we watch "The Labyrinth." My first concert that I remember was the HFStevil in '96. I thought it was great because Jewel got hit in the head with a frisbee and walked off stage (not a fan of Jewel's). But No Doubt was there and they put on a rockin show, as did Presidents of the United States of America. That excuse is just not good enough., Certainly there are exceptions where people may not be able to overcome these things, but when it comes down to it, for the most part, that's an excuse. If you come to this country from another, it is your responsibility to learn the language. If you will not or cannot learn the language, then you more than likely will live a life of poverty. That's logic. You also have those, as I pointed out before that have put themselves in situations based on past decisions (such as having too many kids before you're ready to handle the responsibility, as well as other things) that can prevent you from furthering your education. Unfortunately, those people have to deal with the consequences of their decisions. It's a shame, but they did it to themselves. <> I never said people who don't make a lot of money are lazy. I never said people who make minimum wage are lazy. Perhaps you were just making a comment about other people who have said that, but I never said it. The fact is that most minimum wage jobs are hard work. I've worked in several minimum wage jobs and it WAS hard. People just need to understand that working SMART is much better for you than just working HARD. I won't bother with commenting on welfare as I never brought that up in the first place. The point is that the system is simple, if you take the time to learn it. The people who spend their whole lives in entry level jobs are few compared to the numbers of people who advance to whatever level satisfies them. I spent my time in entry level/minimum wage jobs just like most people, but I knew that wasn't all I wanted out of life, or all that I could achieve. Anyone can move on, and that's a natural progression for us as we move through our lives. If you don't, won't or can't move on, more than likely it's because you're limiting yourself by lack of motivation, lack of education, past bad decisions, or poor self-esteem. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 21:26:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Joshua Kinosh Subject: RE: NPR - Belief-o-matic quiz I ended up as a liberal protestant (100%)... almost a neo-paganist (94%)...
