Even washing dishes or doing janitorial work. Granted it's often skill learned by repetition and experience. There are dishwashers that can bust ass,get all the dishes done in fast efficient manner. Then there are those that it takes twice as long. Because they are more lazy? some of the times thats the case, the old I don't get paid enough to break my back for this place. More times though I would say it's lack of skill, they don't know how to organize and wash things in a efficient manner. Someone has to show them a better way..Like any mother will tell her husband or kids. Try doing her job for a week. How much skill does it take to do laundry, cook, clean, take care of the fam, sometimes while working a job as well. Tell anyone their job takes not skill and so they don't deserve a better life and you'll be lucky to not get punched I would imagine. My real focus from all this though has been not so much a focus on the amount of skill required to do the job, But how important and undervalued the people are that perform these very necessary jobs. Without these positions a business simply can't run and if these positions are in desention the company is doomed for failure. One can say hey anyone can scrub that pot, anyone can run that register, anyone can take money, but can anyone do those jobs with the efficency & dedication that your company wants and needs to be successful? Pay is not only about knowledge and skill,It's also about work ethic that shows the dedication to perform your job to the best of your ability and exceeding,It's also about being competant and having some common sense. The happier the customer service person is,the happier and more loyal your customers will be. The happier your manual labor employees are,the more efficient and better your business is gonna run. You don't get that kind of work ethic and loyalty by paying a the lowest wage the goverment will allow you to get away with. That kind of employee is priceless. Again also look at how much it costs to hire a new employee and if you have constant revolving employee's not only are you losing money, but your efficiency is dropping as well, cause instead of seasoned employees you have a bunch of trainee's that are most likely people without much work ethic, cause they have bounced around min. wage job to min. wage job or they are only working part time for college or extra cash,so in general they can give a shit about the company their not in it for the long haul.. Granted there is only so far you can go in any business, That I don't think is relavent. There is no reason why a entry level job can't pay a wage that will allow based on the economy in that area, A employee enough money to pay their basic bills and have a little left over to enjoy life even raise a family, cause you definatly can't raise a family on minimum wage.. What is wrong with cutting out bogus spending on consulting firms that any employee thats worked there for a few years can't tell you whats wrong or simply ask the questions yourself. What about the many other things that can be done to cut down on overhead costs. Recycling, installing arctic doors, energy efficient equipment, etc etc.. How about turning out the lights and putting motion detectors in buildings? So instead of the lights being on 24/7 it's only 12/7.. Well I'm about all debated out on this now. we've debated the obvious and debated the validivity of the current mentality towards so called unskilled labor. I personally think the mentality that it's somehow that persons fault or choice they are getting paid crap wages for work that does require skill, just because it's more manual labor than filing papers or sitting at meetings. I think that kind of mentality is bogus. Thats just as bad as saying hey those homeless people have a choice. True no one makes someone do anything, they can be manipulated, strong armed, blackmailed, seduced, or just run some bad luck, but we all make our own choices in life, that does'nt give anyone the right to judge and say tough shit, thats not my problem you don't like it do something about it. What happend to the term community? Why take the self serving mentality of it's survival of the strongest, when it could be just as easy to spread the success and share in the prosperity. Does one person really need 18 billion dollars? I'm not saying they don't deserve that and I'm not saying everyone should live a meek lifestyle. I'm just saying can't we have a little more compassion for our fellow human beings and say hey you know what we can afford to make a 30 percent profit each month instead of 33percent.Lets pass that back to those entry level employees that are our foundation, cause if they are happier and more loyal our business will do better and we will go back up to 33 percent if not higher.. Perhaps romanticistic and idealism on my part. I must have been a hippie in a past life or something.. Thats my final peice on the subject.. Hope I have enlightened some and perhaps broadened some viewpoints.. If not well this too shall pass ;-) ::returns to lurking mode:: Alaskan Angry Psycho Lord Lonnie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 23:29:56 EDT From: PURPLMOJO@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: Pagans...
