I wish I could believe that, but unfortunately, I have seen too much to believe it. Don't get me wrong - I'm a positive person and look for the good in all people first. But there is *so* much crime and violence of all types that it is very difficult to believe that "most" people in America are good and wouldn't commit such crimes. Merely looking at the rising prison population in America doesn't even give you a vague idea because so many violent criminals are never apprehended. > PS. It wasn't really the point you were making but I had to gripe about my former company. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 18:49:04 -0700 From: "Conrad Zimmerman" Subject: Polishchick.com Somebody recently made the comment that polishchick.com seemed to have been "erased". As far as I can tell (within my legal rights), that's pretty much the case. There is no source code whatsoever, indicated that an index.html file doesn't even exist on the server, and there's no request for username/password, indicating that any www based ftp has been taken down as well. - -Conrad Zimmerman ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 21:55:00 EDT From: GaulAiel@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: minimum wage The bottom line is that entry-level positions are just that... entry level. A janitor can be replaced, a dishwasher can be replaced, a fry cooker can be replaced. Generally the people in those jobs are either in school living with their parents and are looking for extra cash or lack drive and/ or education. By education, I don't necessarily mean college. There's only so far you're going to go in a McDonald's... there's only so far you're gonna go as a janitor. It doesn't take much skill or training to do those jobs, consequently, the pay is going to reflect that. If anyone can do it, then the job is not that valuable monetarily... kinda like why diamonds are so valuable. It's rare... meanwhile you can find quartz rock anywhere, and it ain't worth jack. Now going into the above mentioned jobs, a person has to realize that job is not going to get them anywhere. If they want to make more money, they must become skilled, or apply their natural skills, if they know what natural skills they possess. Only by putting that effort out will they be able to move beyond their current status in their life (financial, satisfaction with job, etc...) It's different, however in larger companies. Entry level positions are there, but they ARE entry level positions. You can move ahead in most cases, with once again, some effort. People have to be willing to exert themselves more, and not just accept things as they come. Odds are, if you do that, at the end you'll be pretty disappointed with life. And if a company does not offer you the opportunity to advance (which they'd be doomed to failure if they didn't, as a practice) then you have to recognize it and look for another company that will. Entry level positions in this case are just a means for a person to get in the door. It's up to them what they do once they get that foot in there. It'll either get squashed, or they'll work their way through that door, one leg at a time. People need to understand that there is a system, and if you understand the system, you can go far with effort. It's that simple. I know what you're saying about 'evil corporations', as I spent 11 years in one that wasn't always that way. Finally I came to the realization that I could go no further, that they didn't care about me, and they'd dump me when they felt they didn't need me any more. So I left and started my own business. I actually started my business before I left, so I would be ready when it came down to it. Yet I know a lot of people there who were doing my same job, and they stuck their heads in the sand, anbd didn't want to deal with the situation. The writing was on the wall, but they wouldn't respond. Guess what, they just got laid off last month. I remember one guy telling me I was lucky that I had my own business, and was doing pretty good. That strikes me as offensive. I remember listening to a tape one time, and the guy said 'There's no such thing as luck. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity'. It couldn't have been said any better. THAT is the true answer to the minimum wage 'crisis', IMO. Nothing in life is free, as much as we'd like it to be. And if it was free, I doubt we'd be very satisfied with that, either... That's the real shame... that they weren't taught as children how to > live their lives to be successful (whatever successful means to any > individual). I have to disagree with this last statement. I no longer make minimum wage at my job, I've worked long enough and hard enough to be granted a better position with better pay. But, when I was making minimum wage, I was perfectly happy with it. My bills were paid and I had enough left over to do the things that I wanted to. Sure, my neighborhood wasn't great. Yes, I was working a part-time job in addition to my full-time one, but it was only to pass time. I don't think it's reasonable to equate success to income. I feel like I have succeeded in everything that I have really wanted. I'm my own person, I take care of myself and I'm happy. Just because somebody is career minimum wage says nothing about how successful they are, but rather that they might find personal successes in other aspects of their lives. - -Conrad Zimmerman "I see an entire generation pumping gas and waiting tables." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:59:41 EDT From: GaulAiel@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: minimum wage In a message dated 7/20/01 10:50:39 PM Eastern Daylight Time, endorphyne@qwest.net writes: > I have to disagree with this last statement. I was trying to point out that there are different views of success to each individual person. On the point that ' Just because somebody is career minimum wage says nothing about how successful they are, but rather that they might find personal successes in other aspects of their lives.', if they have these successes, or felel they're successful, then they're not the ones griping about minimum wage. So, they're not the ones involved in this situation. If they came to the conclusion that in order to be more successful, they needed more money, then they'd have to take steps to get out of that job. Perhaps you misunderstood where I was coming from... That's my little test to see if they are worth my precious time...and he replied "She's awesome...Angry Johnny kicked ass!". Usually I get "I think I've heard of them" or some other obvious b.s. :) So yeah, I'm happy :) Have a good weekend Psychos!!!
