The environmentalists were hellbent on not having any plants built, as you said. That is the main problem. If you cannot produce your own energy, then you will be reliant on others to produce it for you. They're STILL talking about price caps in CA, after all of that?! That's the stupidest thing you can do in that situation. When politicians who have no idea what they are doing try to step in and establish caps on prices (something gov't has NO business doing) they run power companies out of business. These politicians are just feeding fear to people, telling them that the power companies are 'gouging' them. Anyone who understands the basics of capitalism will know that trying to cap prices will result in no power companies willing or able to supply power to meet demand. Blame Cali's so called leaders, but the environmentalists do share the blame, which was really my only bone of contention with your post. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 18:15:38 -0500 From: "bad bender" Subject: Re: NPR: your Tax Refund I heard on TV that there was some errors that were made, namely, the forms showing no refund when there really was one. Excuse me, Strategic Missle Defense Initiative. They spend billions of dollars on this program that didn't work in 1982, and guess what, it isn't going to work now. That's where your money is going. At least a large part of it. - -------------------------------------------------- Hence, that's why they fought the tax cuts so hard, until they realized that people wanted their money back, as they were being overtaxed. They did a quick 180 degree turn at that point, although they're still trying to convince people the tax cuts are going to shut down gov't funded programs, which is ridiculous. - ----------------------------------------------- For example: Iowa's 400 million dollar shortfall means that the University I just graduated from must cut almost 20 million dollars from its budget. What does this mean? Smaller classes, less teachers, and cutting 20% of the courses they offered last year. Now that is ridiculous. - ----------------------------------------------- It's a surplus! That's money beyond what the gov't needs to operate it's programs. It's not taking a dime away from anything. - ----------------------------------------------- Actually, the government doesn't have that money yet. It's "projected" that we'll make a billion trillion dollars over the next 13 years or something to that effect, and they're giving THAT money back to you. So technically, it's money they don't have yet. - ------------------------------------------------- It's our money, and we should be able to use it to our own benefit. If that means someone donating it to their favorite 'queer organization' (as somebody referred to it the other day) or investing it, or just buying some video games, so be it... - ------------------------------------------------- The funny thing, this is happening right now in Iowa. We happened to have a "surplus" so they went crazy giving money away and spending it and all that jazz, and guess what? This year rolls around, and we have a 400 million dollar shortfall; less money than they expected. So who loses out? Well, it'd be the taxpayer that has to pay higher taxes to make up that 400 million dollars. And the sad part is that the taxpayers buy it, and pass local option sales taxes to make up for money that gets cut from school funding, or whatever. Why can't they just leave well enough alone? Recession, depression? It's all the same. adam Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! On one hand Goverment needs to stay out of some sectors and let Private free enterprise do it's capitolist job in keeping this country vital. In some areas goverment is needed. Many goverment and that includes local, state and federal when I say goverment. Many of Goverments jobs could be privatized, like schools, trash pickup, libraries just to name a few examples. Fee's and charges instead of taxes for people that actually use these types of service, but then alot of the services would fall short. Mainly for example with schools say instead of 170 dollars being taken out in federal taxes each check you don't have to pay taxes for schools that lowers it a little and you only get say 150 taken out..you save 20 dollars that in 2 paychecks a year 480 dollars. think an education can be bought in private school for that?..Doubt it.. Start charging user access for libraries instead of taxing and all of a sudden the small majority of people compared to general populace that use these libraries lose major funding, resulting in shitty libraries. Now I don't have kids,my parents paid taxes while I went to school starting at age 15 I started paying taxes. I think my education was paid for,but I'm still paying for someone elses kids fair, maybe not,but necessary I think perhaps. Although I would like to see public schools go private and the voucher system worked on. It's not gonna work trying to half ass it and do public and private. I think the private system would work, many people would not change their kids school simply out of convenience as well as American complacency, but what would change is school policies and maybe without all the beaurucratic bullshit and those busy body type parents that manipulate the school boards with strong arm tactics schools might improve. Perhaps guidlines for what has to be learned would get tougher, Perhaps instead of giving assignments that take 15 min to complete and rest of the class time wasted kids might learn more.. Perhaps the big board to swatt your ass when you've been bad would come back and these kids at a early age will realize you can't go around being a punk ass and get away with it. And there are enough people on this list who have been affected by it, just based on numbers alone. The statistical number of women (not sure on the statistics of men) who have endured raped or sexually assault by "family", "friends", or unknown perpetrators is *staggering*. Three out of four. The technology is farther advanced and the threat from third world countries is real. We can send a man to the moon but as of now all we can do is watch on the radar screen as a ICBM streams across the sky and hits us or our allies. N. Korea, Iraq (no weapons inspectors in since 98'), China, Russia (still a threat) all posess the ability to attack us, not to mention the other countries that are out there waiting to wet their hands with American blood. Remember what 2 guys and a rubber boat with explosives did to the USS Cole, now just imagine what can happen with the proper backing. There have been recent tests and they have been successful, plus today Bush has Tony Blairs support for the plan because it not only protects us but it also sheilds our allies. > > For example: Iowa's 400 million dollar shortfall means > that the University I just graduated from must cut > almost 20 million dollars from its budget. Some things need to be regulated for public safety and welfare. Economists might say it's a terrible thing for goverment to place minimum wages, but I personally agree with it. I think that businesses need to have this forced on them, cause the majority of businesses are greedy assholes that don't give a shit about their employees. There are some good ones out there I happen to work for one of them and I give thanks to that everytime I start getting pissed or depressed about life. I come from a town of about 40,000 people and a state that has one of the worst economies in the country. It was ranked 48th in states with best economies (new mexico) Town I was from was a nice place to live and a great location, but the economy sucked shit. Employers refused to pay a livable wage. Despite rent increases, gas increases, and all the other increases in cost of living. They were still paying the same wages they were 10 years ago when I was in highschool and only ones that were paying more were paying minimum wage.. Which business owners should realize the more you pay your employee's the happier they will be. Not just because they are getting paid well, but because they will have the money to pay bills & afford entertainment and material things to keep them happy in their home life. If your happy at home and in your life thats gonna spread to work, that will in turn spread to customers or in work production and efficiency, Making the business more successfull.. Higher someone at a shit wage where they can barely pay the bills or are stressed not knowing how they will pay the bills and they are going to come to work with a shitty attitude causing their performance as well as company to fall. Some arrogant bastards might say well those are unskilled jobs and it's there fault they work at some entry level convenience store or fast food place etc.. Well just like many great civilizations that were built on the backs of slave labor, Entry level jobs are a major foundation to the economy. How screwed would we be without our dishwashers busting their backs. One of the saddest things I saw was a old lady dishwasher that worked for the restaurant I worked at in highschool. She worked for 10 years busting suds and was the best damn dishwasher they had and one hell of a person ,great person to work with. In my opinion a foundation and asset to the company. They would not give her a raise when she asked for one. She was making 50 cents more than min. wage and wanting another 50cent raise. She ended up quitting.. The day America wakes up to the fact that paying a LIVEABLE wage will do more for their business and America is the day I say Away with Min, Wage.. When I say liveable I mean not only can they afford to pay the necessity bills, but also a little extra to do or buy things to brighten their days after working the grindstone at some job that they are often unappreciated or looked down upon.
