I do not find it that suprising. Wicca has become a huge trend lately, kind of like people saying that they are bi sexual without even having ever been with someone of the same sex or even considered it. They say it just to fit in with a new crowd. The reason why Wicca has become such a trend I beleive is because of the media. Movies like The Craft and tv shows like Charmed sensationalize it all and make it out to be like wiccans have these amazing supernatural powers, etc, etc. I hate that and that is why anyone tells me that they are wiccan I am highly skeptical until they prove to me that they aren't just another wannabe which I think is really sad that I have to do that. I'm sure that no christians ever doubt that someone else is a christian if someone says so. As you know, the Arctic Refuge truly is America's last truly pristine wilderness, a natural treasure that we must protect in order to preserve our nation's wildlife heritage, as well as the people, birds and wildlife that call the Arctic home. JULY 18, 2001, the House Resources Committee passed the Energy Security Act, which includes a provision to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling! Drilling in the Arctic Refuge will not lower gas prices or respond to the electricity problems in California. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge will not bring us closer to energy independence. Drilling will not serve as a long-term solution for our supposed energy crisis. Ruining the wilderness character of the Arctic Refuge forever would equate to less than a 180-day supply of oil, and it would take a full 10 years before any oil began to flow. The problem is not the "environmental extremists" as you call them, but many other groups and factors in the situation... First, we have the California state government. When California passed deregulation for electric companies (Like acific Gas & Electric), they decided to become socialist and put a "cap" for electric companies, where they could only charge customers "x", even if demand surged and wholesale cost to the companies themselves were up to "100x". This is the ONLY state who put this type of "price freeze" into their state proposal. All of a sudden, with electricity being inexpensive, no matter what the usage, people obviously used higher amounts when it got warmer, charging their cell phones, decided to leave the tv or light on at night, or for hundreds of reasons. The electric companies, caught in a bind for demand, had to buy short term power at "50x or 100x" them amout they could legally charge their consumers, and started losing tens of millions daily. When they were at the point of bankruptcy, after owing billions of dollars for these short term power agreements, the state and federal government (aka ALL taxpayers) had to bail out these companies due to the horrible legislation passed. Also, when deregulation legislation passed, third party electric producers found it extremely hard to build plants in California (from the Not In My BackYard groups, new environmental regulations, and by a lack of profitability due to the price caps), so even as consumption grew (as it always does), California had to use more out-of-state sources to get electricity. Now the electric companies are also to blame, when they saw demand go up 1 or 2%, they should have planned a short/long-term plan to buy electricity a week or month in advance, instead of waiting for the expensive "hours before" prices bit them in the behind. However, all that wasted money if the electricity was NOT used, it would be hard to explain to PG&E shareholders ... it's always about the bottom dollar. Hey don't forget about the other Forsaken Angry Psycho up here in Alaska. Personally I think a lot of the protest tends to be rhetoric and sensationalism. My Best friend worked up on the slope and contrary to popular belief they are extremely anal about keeping the place clean, cause if they don't they get fined hugely. My friend told me they carry around clean up equipment at all times. If they have a vehicle that happens to get an oil leak and make a few drips. They immediately put the vehicle out of commission till the leak is fixed. They have to find and clean up all the places the vehicle dripped oil. Much more than I can say for general public, just look at all the oil stains in parking lots and driveways. Also I come from a town in New Mexico that was built on the oil industry as well. I never saw it destroy any wild life other than the roads to get to the well sight. I mean what exactly is drilling going to destroy? It's made to sound like the whole place is gonna just up and die. Contrary to popular belief as well is that Alaskans are VERY protective of their way of life and nature around them. Companies up here really do care about the environment and take necessary steps to make sure the environments not harmed. Naturally like with anything there are going to be a bad apple example here and there. I'm sure someone will harp on the valdez oil spill and things like that, but In my opinion people are just jumping on a bandwagon. All it takes is for one person to make a few claims that this or that is gonna happen and everyone that is quick to pass judgment won't even find out the facts for themselves. They will just believe it cause it's in the paper or someone said it. Now I don't know all the facts about it and some of what is being said may be true, Maybe it might be there is only 6 MO of oil and it's gonna take 10 years to pump it. Sounds highly unlikely to me seeing as how it costs huge amounts of money to drill for oil and their only going to get 6 months of oil? Doesn't sound very much like a good business practice to me. Hard to imagine, I would think they would lose more money than they would make. 10 years for 6mo oil hmmm now if it was the government and not commercial industry I would believe it. However commercial and private industry tend to have better business practices than our government. So sounds little to evil to be true or the facts are out of context.. My two cents. Nokia/at&t cell phone POE tones! ok, you all haven't heard from me in a while but this is very worth while if you have or are planning to get a cell phone. i just upgraded my nokia cell phone up to a 5165 series with at&t and there is a feature on it that ring tones can be transmitted from they're website to your phone via airwaves. so, no things to plug in or extra equipment to buy. well, i was checking out what song excerpts that they had to download and they have poe!!! they have control, hey pretty, wild, and haunted. the only sucky part is that you need a compatible phone (which i now have) and it costs .99cents plus tax per tone that you retreive but its really worth it. the one that was the best recognizable was hey pretty, the others, if some people heard them really didn't sound that great but hey pretty was perfect so i now am a proud owner of a poe ringing tone!!!! and there are sooo many other cool stuff that you can get too! i just wanted to let you all know of this so that if you are planning to get a phone, i recommend this!! Hence, that's why they fought the tax cuts so hard, until they realized that people wanted their money back, as they were being overtaxed. They did a quick 180 degree turn at that point, although they're still trying to convince people the tax cuts are going to shut down gov't funded programs, which is ridiculous. It's a surplus! That's money beyond what the gov't needs to operate it's programs. It's not taking a dime away from anything. It's our money, and we should be able to use it to our own benefit. If that means someone donating it to their favorite 'queer organization' (as somebody referred to it the other day) or investing it, or just buying some video games, so be it... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 18:41:45 EDT From: GaulAiel@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: Oh god they're going to drill in the arctic! This is the ONLY state > who put this type of "price freeze" into their state proposal. > The problem is with all these groups and the lack of leadership in CA. The environmentalists were hellbent on not having any plants built, as you said. That is the main problem. If you cannot produce your own energy, then you will be reliant on others to produce it for you. They're STILL talking about price caps in CA, after all of that?! That's the stupidest thing you can do in that situation. When politicians who have no idea what they are doing try to step in and establish caps on prices (something gov't has NO business doing) they run power companies out of business. These politicians are just feeding fear to people, telling them that the power companies are 'gouging' them. Anyone who understands the basics of capitalism will know that trying to cap prices will result in no power companies willing or able to supply power to meet demand. Blame Cali's so called leaders, but the environmentalists do share the blame, which was really my only bone of contention with your post. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 18:51:38 EDT From: GaulAiel@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: your Tax Refund In a message dated 7/19/01 6:14:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time, keharper@mailbox.syr.edu writes: > yep, got my tax refund notice in the mail today...big fat $00000.00. woo, > I got mine yesterday... $300... so, yeah... go Bush!
