"Mediocrity thrives on standardization." << Ed finally decides to take a vacation. He books himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeds to have the time of his life -- until the boat sank. He found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies...Nothing. Only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him. In disbelief, he asks her, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?" "I rowed from the other side of the island," she says. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank." "Amazing," he says. "You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you." "Oh, this?" replies the woman. "I made the rowboat out of raw material found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches; I wove the bottom from palm branches; and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree." "But-but, that's impossible," stutters Ed. "You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?" "Oh, that was no problem," replies the woman. "On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware." Ed is stunned. "Let's row over to my place," she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf. As Ed looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, he could only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home Sit down please; would you like to have a drink?" "No, no thank you," he says, still dazed. "Can't take any more coconut juice." "It's not coconut juice," the woman replies. "I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?" Trying to hide his continued amazement, he accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom." No longer questioning anything, Ed goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside of a swivel mechanism. "WOW! This woman is amazing," he muses, "What next?" When he returns, she greets him wearing 'nothing but vines' strategically positioned, and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckons for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've been out here for a really long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months. You know..." She stares into his eyes. Well, I must say I am new to the world of POE. My wife got me into her and I have grown to respect her work very highly. However, I was less than impressed with her Leno and Conan performances ... both seemed rather flat. But as I assumed that had more to do with the artificial nature of shows like that ... one song, less than ideal sound, and a mostly unaware and uninterested audience. Anyway, for those that have yet to see her in concert ... she does a world class show, even it was just 30 minuets. Very energetic and of very high quality. Even if many of the people where not there to see her ... it was clear that she felt much more at ease and at home in concert that on some TV sound stage... I was somewhat dismayed by all the apparent DM 'fans' that keep coming and going and just being flat out rude while POE was on stage. I really want to see POE do a full blown club tour as a headliner so she will get the respect she is due. Oh one thing that has not been mentions to my knowledge about the show occurred during "Hey Pretty." During the "can't you feel me longing" bit, POE squatted down and was singing, quite seductively, into the ear of one of the security guards. He just stood there and tried to ignore her ... but he did smile a bit and I am nit sure but he may have even blushed a little when she finished. Anyway, when the song was over she sang "can you feel me" on last time and then said "I guess not." One last note for now (as if anyone read all this mess) my wife and I left as soon as POE was done, as we were leaving some guy said "no in and out, if you leave you cannot come back" to which I said "hey the show is over ... after that performance Depesh might as well pack it up and go on home...." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 11:49:10 -0500 From: Jennifer Cook Subject: RE: "Race" and ethnicity. I don't care about the person who 'could spend $40,000 on a car and not think twice about it anyway'. They pay far more taxes than me because they are making more money than me. They have worked hard (going to school, making sacrifices in their lives) to get where they are, and they should recieve a percentage proportional to the taxes that they paid, which far outweigh what I paid. Why would I resent them for it? That really would make no sense, IMO. Hey brendles...(and any Dallas APs) Thanks for sharing! I wasn't able to make it to the HOL discussion... which sucked... but I'm sooo glad to hear that so many people showed up!! Yay!!! :D I found out late late Monday night that I probably wouldn't be able to get to the AP pre-meeting in time (due to my fellow concert go-er)... so I was a little upset... But POE really was great!! I was a little irritated at everyone walking around.. but wasn't it cool when she jumped off stage and ran around... did you see how everyone's attention suddenly shifted on her and they all stood up?? I thought it was definitely cool. I saw a bunch of APs down in the section 101... I was in 200... and so envious of all who had grabbed those front section seats!! :p I thought DM was great... but I hope POE headlines her own thing SOON!! I would love to see Smirnoff packed with APs! If anyone was able to tape any of the Dallas stuff... will you please please please let me know? Hi Michelle & All, I went to the Q&A Monday night at the Fretz Park library. I arrived about 6 pm (start time was 7 pm), and was probably about the 40th person in line. The auditorium was small with approx 120 chairs, so many people ended up standing and/or sitting on the floor. As a quick aside, Mark and Poe were live on KDGE-FM earlier in the afternoon, and Mark was convinced that only about 30-40 people would attend. Well, with all the hype Jessie kept propagating throughout the week, I would estimate the crowd that showed up at approximately 200 people. On the same live broadcast, the Dallas listeners were also treated to three live performances on the radio! Poe and Mark perfomed "Hey Pretty," and Poe performed "Wild" and "Control," if my memory serves me correctly. (Cut me some slack, please...I was exhausted Monday at work after being out past 2 am seeing the Smithereens at another local venue.) Mark was wearing a red shirt and jeans, and Poe wore a great cap-sleeve t-shirt that said "Mommy, what is a sex pistol?" on the front in childish printing, along with the Anarchy symbol...very cool. She looked fantastic, and had little rhinestones affixed to the inner corners of her eyes...very festive!I don't think any of the email questions were used...Mark and Poe both selected members of the audience to ask questions, and both made comments on each question. I was called on, and asked them about the significance of November 6th in Madrid and its references in both Haunted and HOL. I have posted the response on the poe.com message board under the thread "The mystery of Madrid, November and Poe" for those interested. The discussion group began about 7:15 as their limo was stuck in traffic (a block-long white stretch!), and ran until 9 pm. Waldenbooks was there, selling pb copies of HOL, and the "limited edition" reader's guide was nothing but a small brochure with suggested questions to lead your own discussion group about the book. No toon shirts to be found, and unfortunately, there was no signing after the event due to time constraints. As for tonight's concert at the Smirnoff Music Centre, Poe was ON! She perfomed Terrified Heart, Control, Wild, Hey Pretty w/Mark, Haunted, Angry Johnny, 5-1/2 Minute Hallway and a special rendition of Happy Birthday for our own AP, Tim! (An interesting note...one attendee at the discussion group Monday night recommended the book The Art Lover by Carol Maso to Mark and Poe. Well, at the concert tonight a fan presented Poe with a copy of the book.) DM also put on a really solid show, which in my opinion, was much better than their performance on their last tour. I found out late in the day Tuesday, from Jessie at KDGE, that the after-party never got organized. Evidently, there had been a pre-show party organized for Monday night after the HOL discussion group, also at the Lizard Lounge, but that the party was cancelled by the venue :-( Due to other plans, I was unable to attend the pre-concert dinner, and as a result, I didn't get to meet any local psychos. However, I did have the opportunity to meet Kevin, a new AP who drove up from Harlingen to catch the show, at the discussion group Monday night...(Hi, Kevin!) I hope next time Poe is in town, we can get some AP events planned in advance and that I can actually meet more of the group. Sorry for the length of this post, but it's late, I'm running on 6 hrs. of total sleep since Saturday night, and I'm on a total Poe high. Hope this info is helpful :-) - --brendles-- _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2001 15:14:18 -0500 From: "bad bender" Subject: Re: NPR-Re: tipping everyone - Good idea! and I can kindly refuse that job because I have has extensive training working both high voltage and low voltage systems.
