Hi Michelle & All, I went to the Q&A Monday night at the Fretz Park library. I arrived about 6 pm (start time was 7 pm), and was probably about the 40th person in line. The auditorium was small with approx 120 chairs, so many people ended up standing and/or sitting on the floor. As a quick aside, Mark and Poe were live on KDGE-FM earlier in the afternoon, and Mark was convinced that only about 30-40 people would attend. Well, with all the hype Jessie kept propagating throughout the week, I would estimate the crowd that showed up at approximately 200 people. On the same live broadcast, the Dallas listeners were also treated to three live performances on the radio! Poe and Mark perfomed "Hey Pretty," and Poe performed "Wild" and "Control," if my memory serves me correctly. (Cut me some slack, please...I was exhausted Monday at work after being out past 2 am seeing the Smithereens at another local venue.) Mark was wearing a red shirt and jeans, and Poe wore a great cap-sleeve t-shirt that said "Mommy, what is a sex pistol?" on the front in childish printing, along with the Anarchy symbol...very cool. She looked fantastic, and had little rhinestones affixed to the inner corners of her eyes...very festive! I don't think any of the email questions were used...Mark and Poe both selected members of the audience to ask questions, and both made comments on each question. I was called on, and asked them about the significance of November 6th in Madrid and its references in both Haunted and HOL. I have posted the response on the poe.com message board under the thread "The mystery of Madrid, November and Poe" for those interested. The discussion group began about 7:15 as their limo was stuck in traffic (a block-long white stretch!), and ran until 9 pm. Waldenbooks was there, selling pb copies of HOL, and the "limited edition" reader's guide was nothing but a small brochure with suggested questions to lead your own discussion group about the book. No toon shirts to be found, and unfortunately, there was no signing after the event due to time constraints. As for tonight's concert at the Smirnoff Music Centre, Poe was ON! She perfomed Terrified Heart, Control, Wild, Hey Pretty w/Mark, Haunted, Angry Johnny, 5-1/2 Minute Hallway and a special rendition of Happy Birthday for our own AP, Tim! (An interesting note...one attendee at the discussion group Monday night recommended the book The Art Lover by Carol Maso to Mark and Poe. Well, at the concert tonight a fan presented Poe with a copy of the book.) DM also put on a really solid show, which in my opinion, was much better than their performance on their last tour. I found out late in the day Tuesday, from Jessie at KDGE, that the after-party never got organized. Evidently, there had been a pre-show party organized for Monday night after the HOL discussion group, also at the Lizard Lounge, but that the party was cancelled by the venue :-( Due to other plans, I was unable to attend the pre-concert dinner, and as a result, I didn't get to meet any local psychos. However, I did have the opportunity to meet Kevin, a new AP who drove up from Harlingen to catch the show, at the discussion group Monday night...(Hi, Kevin!) I hope next time Poe is in town, we can get some AP events planned in advance and that I can actually meet more of the group. Sorry for the length of this post, but it's late, I'm running on 6 hrs. of total sleep since Saturday night, and I'm on a total Poe high. Might as well tip our fast food workers, the guy who rips the tickets when you go to a movie, or the wino you give a quarter to because he handled your money so well. Heck, how about you tip me, a Master Control Operator, because I think that I switch between the commercials and the programs on your local television station pretty well, without you even knowing it. In fact, instead of tipping, why don't we have a TV tax, where all the money is funnelled directly into my bank account? Sounds goodto me. The madness must end. I tip. I tip when I get good service. Which is most of the time. If a waitress disappears, her tip decreases. If she's pleasant, it goes up. I'm polite and friendly to every waitress that has served me, the most they could do is be polite back, which most are. I've found that if the first thing you do when a waitress or waiter approaches is smile, they'll wait on you hand andfoot, and be happy about it. I'm done. adam Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! By-products of slave labor in 2001: Sugar- Dominican Republic Chocolate- Ivory Coast Paper Clips- China Carpets- Nepal Cigarettes- India Peaches- South Carolina, USA *Human trafficking routes run throughout North America, often leading into the U.S. from Mexico, Canada, or overseas. Forced labor on Dominican sugar plantations persists, and poor Haitian children are held as "restavec" domestic slaves. *Trafficking in women flows from east to west in Europe. Thousands of women from the Ukraine, the Balkans, and other eastern states are lured or abducted into involuntary servitude, forced to work in brothels or as domestics. *More people are enslaved in Asia than any other continent. Millions are trapped in debt bondage throughout Southeast Asia, while human trafficking routes - particularly in sex slaves - cross the continent. Government-sponsored forced labor in Burma and China affects thousands. *Child slave trafficking routes run throughout Africa, with some children exported to the Middle East. In North Africa, racial divides on Africa's east and west coasts drive systems of chattel slavery. In Mauritania, hundreds of thousands are born into slavery. In Sudan, government militias storm southern villages and abduct women and children as slaves. I agree completely that terms like Black American or African American or any other seperatists terms are bad. I also never said you followed Jesse or Al, but a large groups of blacks do. You are completely right in the things you say. I did not mean to say that all black people were alike. No two people are alike. Just when you have 90% of one group voting for one point of view, a point of view highly advocated by Sharpton, Jackson and the NAACP, it makes me wonder if maybe it isn't a group issue. By the large, men like Larry Elder are considered Uncle Toms like other black folk and as you said, you had the same thing happen to you for not speaking "bl;ack". - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Uhura Bisa Jones" To: "Joel" Cc: ; Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2001 3:32 AM Subject: Re: NPR: racism > --> I don't believe in the phrase "black american" or the "black > community" because I AM "black" in America [I am actually multi-ethnic, > but people assume I'm "just" black, so it doesn't really matter to the > masses what my actual ethnicity is-which is why i use quotation marks > around "black" and "white"] and I don't have the problem you > mentioned.
