To just try and reach as many people as possible. To just...get people to think about things in a focused, serious way. > How can one nation survive and grow together when one group is hated, > celebrated or otherwise treated differently based on non-merit things? - --> how can one nation survive and grow together when one group is hated, oppressedm and assumed to have no merit whatsoever? To be honest, I don't REALLY know enough about the actual law of affirmative action to argue a viewpoint about it. I do know, however that Affirmative Action does not equal preferential treatment. At least legally. If eomployers or others have interpreted it that way and acted in that vein, I'm not sure it's the law that is the actual problem. Preferential treatment based on anything other than merit IS wrong. When it's based on ethnicity, I think it's a symptom of a much bigger problem: institutional racism. I remember in Anthropology class that some employers would actually tell rejected applicants that they had to hire "a " rather than tell the person that they simply weren't qualified for the position. That's piss poor management to be sure, not to mention weak - - but I remember feeling very upset that a hapless, coward of a manager perpetuated institutional racism rather than be honest with an applicant. And who knows just how many people have done that? It makes me want to cry sometimes. That's why there are so many people out there who believe that "hard working people not get a job they rightly deserved" because the other applicant was of a different ethnicity. I wont say that it doesn't happen, because it probably does. It happens because the federal government does not want to legislate morality when it comes to racism (or sexism, b/c Affirmative Action has to do with sex and gender too). I think that no one wants to really think through these myriad of issues and truly take a stand to get things changed. I believe the Affirmative Action law (what I know of it and what's come of it) was poorly written and not supported by legislation or politicians. It was a band-aid to keep people quiet. No one wants to deal with discrimination in a legal sense, but what choice do we have. At the end of the day, if there isn't a law about it, people will be more likely to do it. Texaco? Dennys? *sigh* And they're just the companies that got caught. > Affirmative action? It's wrong, reverse discrimination, plain and simple. > Giving one person points, preference, special treatment for no reason other > then where their ancestors came from. I've seen it cause hard working people - --> I'm against nepotism too. :) Ditto for the 'old boys club' and the 'glass ceilings' for women and "ethnic minorities". So we're saying we agree with each other, right? > differences. Buy oh well right? It isn't going to happen in my life time. - --> That's for sure. Our government has never apologized for the abominations of slavery. Bill Clinton as President did, but our government as a whole has yet to acknowledge its wrong doing AND failure to keep a promise it made to freed slaves. 40 acres and a mule anyone? Oh, and let's not forget about the Native Americans - in Idaho a group of Republicans is for overturning the governing rights on certain reservations so that, ultimately, non-natives can get cheaper hunting and fishing licenses on those reservations. Sounds unbelieveable, but its true. Sorry, I strayed from my point. Until people's attitudes and thoughts change, their actions won't change. And the only way to change peoples thoughts is by dialogue. As long as there are people out there who will directly discriminate or subconciously discriminate against another person because of ethnicity, sex, gender, height, weight, eye color, sexual preference, language, hair color, etc - it will not ever end. So? We're not arguing that "black" people can't be racist. ANYONE CAN BE RACIST TOWARDS ANY GROUP. Even the KKK doesn't accept all white people. You have to be from a certain ethnic background, and Protestant, I believe. Are we clear on that? Is everyone on the same wavelength? Your ethnicity does not determine: 1. Whether you are racist. 2. Who you are racist against. A "white" person can be racist against whites just as "blacks" can be racist against "blacks". And no one ever said that "black" people couldn't be racist. Why do you assume that we (I?) think that? > supposed to mean??? That all white people are dirty and eat off of nasty > (very nasty) school floors? - --> I'm torn here. Yes, they were wrong to say that to/about you. It was stupid, mean, petty, and totally ignorant. However, how does it feel that people speak that way about you because you're white? 200+ years would be a long time to be treated like that, huh? I don't think retaliation is the answer, but I see their point of view. They are still wrong, and more than likely weren't taught any better. However, I am amused that you said "every black kid at my school is racist". Have you talked to every black kid at your school and specifically asked them if they were racist against white people? Are you sure that any of you even know what it means to be a racist, versus being prejudiced and bigoted? They are not the same thing. The person who talked about "white people eating off floors" made a ignorant, prejudiced, mean remark. > Most of the black people in my school didn't even talk to me until they found > out I could dance, what that has to do with anything I'll never know. It's hypocrisy at it's finest. I think it's because they have no concept of the BIG picture, and I'm not sure anyone intelligent has tried to explain it to them. Plus, humans are big on revenge. We figure if the person who wronged us isn't sorry, maybe we should MAKE them feel the hurt they made us feel. [too much historical evidence to list]. That doesn't make it right, however. I hate double > standards... but god if you try to tell them that, look out you're in for the > bitching out of your life. - --> I KNOW. I mean, sheesh. I said it once and I'll say it again. I Love to discuss potentially controversial topics with intelligent people. Or heck, even those just willing to communicate on the topic. But most people would prefer to remaini blissfully ignorant because it "doesn't affect them", only it DOES affect them. More than they realize. Please don't think all black people are ignorant and poor communicators, or you're guilty of the same things they are. I;m willing to bet you there's at least one "black" person in your school who realizes there's a bunch of pots calling the kettle black (no pun intended, i swear!). I'm not saying everyone in my school is like > that... I've talked to a bunch of girls since freshman year and they're all > really nice to me... but sadly the majority is very racist. - --> Oops, I think I misquoted you above. I apologize :) > people could get mad at racists or be racist to racists... but why get mad at > me, when I never did anything mildly offensive to anyone? Just because I'm > white doesn't mean I'm racist. - --> *sigh* i know. But some people don't know how to let go of their bitterness and anger and work toward a positive and productive solution. I can't tell you the number of people who speak slang to me just because of my skin color. BTW, I'm multi-ethnic.) i don't speak slang. I don't say "yo" "wit" "axe" (ask). I don't speak AAVE (African American Vernacular English), and don't get me started on Ebonics (I wanted to DIE when I first heard about that on the news). I was rejected by the "black community" at my first university because I drank tea, listened to country music, owned no rap CDs, and just in general wasn't "black" enough for them. It hurt, but I realized that I couldn't let them or anyone else define who I was. Poe says "You can't talk to a psycho like a normal human being", and I feel the same way about willfully ignorant people. > > Sorry about the long email... I just get so mad about stupid crap like racism. - --> No problem Tessa. Don't lose hope. I think it's stupid too. ALL of it. Learn good stuff. Especially the list etiquette. The two biggest problems we have had since 1996 are poeple not using NPR appropriately, and people not quoting only relative material, which causes digests to come out more frequently and unnecessarily long. Yes indeed, for those of you overwhelmed by mail, there is a digest version available. Want a web site with current Poe news? Look at the angry-psychos digest archive on the web. ::P Find out about attachments to the list. Etc. Click and absorb...and then try to remember the rules so that everyone benefits. For the Poe related goodies, angry-psychos.com has a family photo album from the Jezebel In Hell tour. http://www.angry-psychos.com/events/ Erik and I are working hard to finally get this section updated. We could always use more contributions! ;) If you have pictures and/or stories and nowhere else to post them, let us know. First, let me state right off the bat that this is not meant as an attack on the above-named person. I'm just one of those _annoying_ people who likes to make sure things are fully understood for what they really are. (Incessantly.) :) Second, wooha! This is my second or third post in a few days...watch out, folks! She's comin' out of lurk mode! (Or not, but that's cool.) :P And now, on to the semblance of a point. Agnosticism is not necessarily a far fetch from Christianity. There, that was it. Agnostics are a rather broad group of people who each believe a number of different things. Some are Christian-like but disillusioned and disheartened by the cupidity (among other things) of your average organized religion (i.e., me), and others are closer to atheists, pagans, etc. in what they believe. They all come together with the idea/knowledge/belief/whatever-you'd-like-to-call-it that no one really has all (or even any) of the answers; not one religion/person/group knows anything for sure. It really can be a diverse bunch, :). Ok, I'm done now. Continue talking about Poe's non-existent body fat, heh. ===== Shanna Hollich - Shadow123@poe.org AOL IM: RHFoJO shadow123.diaryland.com NO S N B- C~ L- O++ CV Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Well POE rocked as usual!!!! I left a bit into the DM show to catch the after party at lizard lounge but they were closed I hung out til 10:45 and then called the radio station (KDGE) which tooooook forever, they did not know anything about an official afterparty. So unfortunately I did not get to see POE again :( She did however mention the AP's after her first song :) then said she would save that for later (best for last I guess).
