I loved it - at least, the little bit I saw. We got there late due to a favor I was doing for a friend... the sacrifices we make... I saw some psychos there - you may have seen me too - I had the OLD style Psycho/Human shirt on... I think one AP did grab me and compliment the shirt... I saw two people with AP shirts running around, (red and blue maybe???) but they were gone before I knew it... Other than that, lemme just say that concerts in the daylight are difficult to get into, but Poe did her damndest... those big screens suck during the day! Okay, now for the Simon and Garfunkel part: My sister (not a huge Poe fan, but you know...) noted that the song Haunted kinda sounded like the "die de die" part of the S & G's "The Boxer". Anyone else think so? I kinda see her point - the end part with the Ba Da Pa Pa's and all... it was interesting to hear Poe with an outsider's ears, if you will... Anyway, for those that haven't seen the show yet, let me say - STAY FOR MODE!!! It is possibly the best show I've seen of theirs, and I've been a DM fan since the early 80's... when I could pull off more makeup and stockings than I can now ;-D Talk to you later - LanceKitty, missing the live Alan Wilder remixes during the shows... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 12:05:21 -0500 From: lance.kinney@amd.com Subject: RE: NPR-Re: to the americans on the list.... When Constantine decided to make Christianity the official religion, Christian holidays like Christmas replaced pagan holidays such as Saturnalia. However, you can find a plethora of holidays much older than the traditional Christian ones that take place right around the same time as your modern-day Christmases and whatnot, and say, "Oh, well, the Christians took that from us." Not everyone can work a 9-5, due to other constraints than choice. On the other hand, many people DO work these jobs by choice, due to the reasons above. Personally, I'd like a much more flexible schedule than 7-7 M-F, I'd like to work OT sometimes for some spending cash, and I like the camaraderie of a nice restaurant (I worked in a couple in college). Until you have to work there or try to work there, back off on the bitching to the management thing, or the low opinion of your server. Sorry, this kind of selfishness pisses me off. I grew up trick - or - treating . It's fun. I don't think of it as an " evil " holiday . To us it is about creativity .. who has the best costume.. who gets the most candy bars ... which house gave you pencils . It's a tradition . We celebrate St Patrick's Day. We aren't even Irish . I make sure to dress the kids in green before they go to school so they won't get pinched. We have corned beef and cabbage . We go out and drink green beer. ( not the kids ) :-) We celebrate Easter . Again, the Easter bunny has nothing to do with Christ. The whole Easter egg thing is seperate from the religous aspect of the holiday. My children wake up to Easter baskets.. and an egg hunt. Then we watch various movies ( The Easter Story , The Velveteen Rabbit ) We sit down to dinner as a family and hopefully have other family or guests with us. I look forward to that day each year. Many families do things different ways . I have friends who think it is terrible to celebrate Halloween ... and wouldn't let their kids watch The Smurfs ( witchcraft ) . I always thought the message that good outwins evil was a good one for children. Back to my point.... if you don't wanna hear what someone has to say.. delete it. The subject is displayed before each and every email . I have learned quite a bit on this list ... tolerence for other personality types, being one. ~jez Buy POE ! It's free. Me? If so, I never said that "only white people are racist". Everyone has prejudices. Everyone looks to stereotypes one way or another. It's when prejudiced ideas become acts of racism/classism/sexism that things can go terribly wrong. > You want to talk about institutional racism, check out Chris Rock, Eddy > Murphy, Martin Lawrence and just about any other comedian on B.E.T. . There - --> First of all, as a personal decision, I don't watch BET. I find the channel offensive and often hypocritical in that it consistently airs programming that perpetuates stereotypes and at times promotes "reverse racism" (which is a poorly defined term to begin with..). Also, BET is owned by MTV, so I'm not sure that the politics of the channel will change any time soon. > is hardly a routine that doesn't involve making fun (i.e. racist) comments > about white people. If a white comedian made any of those statements about > black people the NAACP would be breathing down their necks so fast. - --> Um. See what I say below in response. As for the NAACP - *rolls eyes* They can't even keep their administrative affairs in order. That organization hasn't promoted any real societal change for "black people" in decades. They are all talk, no action, and nolonger hace a clearly defined role, let alone goals for the future. Come on, Louis Farrakhan is a member! > I can be > at work and hear one black talk to another saying nigger this or nigger that - --> First of all, I don't think anyone anywhere should use the term for any reason. EVER. Now that I've made that clear, here's the "other sides" rationale: It's like the word Bitch. By reclaiming a slur and using it as a badge of something positive, I empower myself and others not to accept the stereotypes and assumptions of who I am. Women who are called bitches are "difficult", "aggressive", or "not nice". This comes from the default idea that women should be complacent, feminine, passive, cute, sweet, etc etc etc. Which, from my point of view, is a form of oppression by the patriarchy to keep women from achieving true equality. (We can have a discussion on that some other time, if you'd like) ANYWAY - some blacks (and other people as well) make the same argument about the word 'nigger'. I agree with Chuck D (rapper for Public Enemy) in that you cannot change that particular word, its meaning and history in 10 years time-ESPECIALLY if no one is communicating about the issues at hand. You cannot erase 200+ years of discrimination, oppression, and abuse with the blink of an eye. therefore, any use of hte word is unacceptable to me. Don't get the idea that every "black" person accepts use of the word nigger. What upsets me is that......ok. We're having a dialogue, right? A relatively calm, rational dialogue about race, blah blah blah. What upsets me is that the people who mostly USE the word "nigger" in a joking, casual context have not truly thought about the implications of what they are doing. Especially rappers *rolls eyes again*. Many have no concept of the truly big picture - that they themselves through their actions, image, conversations, etc are perpetuating negative stereotypes throughout the WORLD. Most have no idea the responsibility they shrug off and the messages they're sending out are shaping the next generation. It disgusts me. > but as soon as I say it , in the same casual, joking tone that everyone else > is using I'm automatically hit with a big red stamp that says RACIST! or > BIGOT! Institutional racism, it isn't all the black man's burden. - --> Tell me about it. It hurts EVERYONE. It's terrible because it's like a horrible Catch-22 that no one knows how to "fix". And in the meantime, everyone suffers by the utter lack of communication and understanding. It's kind of like the patriarchial model of our society. In this new millenium (ok, since the late 90s) men have started to realize that the rules THEY set up for how our society works is just as limiting for them as it is for women. And now there's a lot of backlash against women and feminism. The hard part now is recognizing that it doesn't always have to be a win/lose situation. Somehow we all have to work together and fix this mess. I'm just as frustrated as you are. It's at least nice to know that there _are_ other people out there > > * I want who ever reads this that I am not mad, yelling, angry or hot on the > topic.
