I know its probably the only one we haven't gone on in months, so might as well go into one more annoying, standard very NPR discussion. I like it though, it's nice to see people thinking for themselves on the list. The only thing I want to say about the post Theresa Made was that she is dead right. Racism is not the sole practice of white folks. Every time I hear the phrase "reverse discrimination" or the likes think about it. These phrases imply that rascism is the sole dominion of whites. It just isn't true. The ethnic cleavages in the US have had so many different forms and white vs. X is not the only one. I can simply think about the cases of white on white cleavage for one. The incredible anti Irish anti catholic sentiment is a prime example. Anti german sentiment caused my family to lose a whole portion of its heritage when a man was lynched for being german in my grandmothers home town, just blocks from where she lived as a child (verifiable, check out the history of Collinsville Illinois). It also isn't just white for examples... go to Hawaii. My father was beat up for being white when he was a kid. Howlies like him were treated like dirt. Later when many Japaneese people moved in, it continued there. When visiting, restraunts have seated us in separate places from the Asain majority in the restraunt. In LA there is a problem between Asains and Blacks. There is so much of this in Cali because the US is a melting pot. That is ultimately what it comes down to. W! e are a truly diverse nation and many people are xenophobic. Because of this fact, such problems will exist. Countries that brag about their records have nowhere near the diversity and still have problems that don't give them the right to ridicule us. let us see... Canada Vs. Quebec, N. Ireland vs England, Israel, China v Tibet, Malaysia v. Chineese and so on. People distain that which is foreign to them. Only when education steps in do true in roads to unity occur. Cheers, Kyle PS Fun anti Irish facts...there are tons of famous phrases related to the Irish that you probably haven't even noticed. Patty Wagon is one. Gringo comes from the Mexican American war, where Irish soldiers died for their country (without much thanks), and their campfire renditions of "green grows the Lilac" was bastardized into Gringo. See how many you can spot. It's not that hard. Try it for other ethnic groups, its fun! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 01:50:44 EDT From: BUDave18@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: to the americans on the list Just so you know all-- our names of thedays of the week "tuesday, friday, thursday...etc.." are based on the pagan gods of Tew, Freda (Tew's wife), and Thor, respectivley... so it is: Tewsdag (in Old English)/"Tew's Day" = Tuesday.... If it was it would be celebrated in the springtime I believe. Christmas claims to be a celebration of the birth of christ when in fact it is a holiday created to replace a pagan holiday (the name of which escapes me at the moment, as I am only a Jew). Much like Easter was created to replace the celebration of (I believe) the vernal equinox. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this person is right, christmas was a holiday taking the place of the pagan celebration of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year the name of the holiday is yule (think yuletide greetings, etc...) there are 8 major pagan holidays (2 eqinoxes, 2 solstices, and 4 cross-quarter days) my mother happens to be pagan, so we have bonfires to celebrate some of the holidays(spring equinox, summer soltice or midsummer... samhain (october 31st), atumnal equniox, and the winter solstice) i personally don't consider myself a part of any religion, although religion is something that interests me a lot... i think it's funny that the christian religion has taken so much of itself directly from the pagan religion (holidays, mainly, and many of the basic ideas for the way to live life -- think of it this way -- rituals and 'spells' are exactly like prayers, in both cases the god is being asked to help towards a change) yet still the majority of peole in the christian religion (at least that i've run across in my short time, i'm not saying everyone is like this) think of pagans as 'devil worshippers' and evil, because many people don't take the time to find out about something before they condemn it... many people have died for the christian religion, defending their beliefs, and many people have died _because_ of the christian religion, because they believed differently, sure this works for the "thou shalt have no other gods before me" but what about "thou shalt not kill"? i'd like to say also that i'm not saying that the christian religion is bad, some of the main ideas are rooted in a general good will, it's just that throughout history christianity has killed because of a difference in beliefs(witch burnings throughout the ages, the spanish inquisition, etc)and it continues even today -- the christian religion tries to limit what people are allowed to learn and think (for example -- the theory of evolution banned from being taught in PUBLIC schools [mainly in the south]) also, when the military allowed pagan services to be practiced on military bases, many christians in authority nearly exploded from religious indignation at this display of _freedom of religion_. fortunately, this was protected by the first ammendment, although many people in power are still trying to put this down as a matter of fact, our *lovely* new president had this to say on the subject: ABC's Good Morning America interview between Bush and Peggy Wehmeyer, 1999-June -24. Bush states that I dont think that witchcraft is a religion. I would hope that military officials would take a second look at the decision they made. and also "Web White & Blue 2000" Question and Answer session with GW Bush. www.webwhiteblue.org/debate/2000-10-15/bush/question Bush states I do not think witchcraft is a religion, and I do not think it is in any way appropriate for the U.S. military to promote it. but anyway, i've gotten off subject and this post has gotten a lot longer than i originally intended... just my 2 cents ~mindy >Ok. It was the british, it was the scandinavians. But that's besides the point. The real issue here is american ignorance and that arrogant feeling I get that they think they know better than others just because their economy happens to be doing well. What saddens me however, is that most americans have never heard of Chile, let alone the rest of south america, central america, africa, parts of europe, asia and australia. The issue here is ignorance. And sadly, there's too much of it. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 09:01:36 -0500 From: "Stephen LeFain" Subject: NPR: @#^%* NPR junk.... Ye Gods, my inbox looks like an overstuffed Christmas turkey. I've got an idea. If someone sends out a message that ticks you off, email THAT PERSON back, not the list. The RE:RE:RE:RE messages just get repetitive and really flood out the rest of the list. I'm not saying to be nice or stop pissing each other off, it's just that some of us don't care to sift through 3 billion emails between people trying to prove that they are right and the other person is wrong. And yes, I do just delete the emails I don't care to read. Just an idea to clean up the clutter. This isn't just for whoever wrote that lovely piece of profane scribblings, but for anyone that writes to the list. It makes people think you're (not your) smart, and they'll actually listen to what you have to say. That or you'll think I'm a snob and you won't listen to me at all, and all hope is lost for you. Culling, anyone? If you feel like flaming me, do so, but please, off list. If you don't, it will just prove how idiotic you really are. adam - --- "J.R. I need your help. I'm such an idiot when it comes to the bible. I've been scouring the internet for days where I can read neutral stories about stories in the bible. I need cliffs notes and stuff. More specifically, I'm interested in learning the story Sodom and Gammorah. It's used in so many biblical debates concerning homosexuality and it's about time I chimed in on what everyone is saying. So, could anyone tell me the story or send to somewhere that has it, or lists the versus I can read for myself? I would rather learn it from a person so that I can ask questions... I don't know what I want... just answers.... Thanks psychos... (I think I'm going to hell for just asking the APs for bible help... Perhaps, but I'd say you have a beTTer chance of being quickly dispatched to heLL for your lack of an NPR in the subject line, especially since there have been TWO sermons on your MORAL responsibility to utilize NPR in all stuff that is Not Poe Related. ALSO Note, I sniPPed out all the stuff from your message that does not relate to the response. This helps in a variety of ways, including keeping the clutter down on the AP digest. sp00k etc ...
