I don't know if that figure is correct, but I hear the same one all the time. I don't think it s true for the last 3 months, but there has been a three month period where it was true. how could they possibly do this? well, they allow capital punishment and they have about ten times as many people living there as live in America. what does china have to do with slave labor? Well, they have taken a lot of flak for making products in prisons, and for other sweat shops in china OK< I can't believe some one asked why Bibles could be printed in Chinese. Are you actually serious? ok #1 just because China doesn't allow outside religions doesn't mean that the Chinese government owns the copy-write on the Chinese language. there are Chinese people outside of china who speak mandarin, there are people outside of china who speak Cantonese, there are even people outside of china who read and write Chinese characters! #2 Hong Kong is now part of China. in Hong Kong, freedom of religion exists, and although Christianity isn't the major religion, it is pretty popular. As to whether they like Americans, people in the country probably don't even know that America exists (well maybe, but they could care less) and things aren't in both English and Chinese anywhere but Hong Kong. Remember, Hong Kong was part of the British Empire until just a few years ago. Everything was half English half Chinese? And now that China is modernizing and the system is becoming slightly more capitalist, in some larger cities other than Hong Kong, there is starting to be a western influence OK, Japan is about as democratic as the US or England or any other modern western country. Some Japanese are Christians, some aren't. Why do they celebrate Christmas? Well, Christmas isn't much of a Christian holiday any more. How many non religious people do you know here who celebrate Christmas? I know a lot. My best friend hasn't been to church in his life, his family doesn't believe in God, and they have a big Christmas party every year. It is very possible for this to occur. Remember, fewer countries have a death penatly than you may realize. The EU for instance requires that its member nations have no death penalty. China on the other hand executes frequently and without a lengthy appeals process. This means that executions are done within hours sometimes and not years like in the US. I did not say he learned all his english from the bible and only from the bible. He used it as a primary learning text, probably coupled with books on the two languages. I have read novels in French that taught me more by struggling through with a dictionary than some regular books on the language. It helps to immurse yourself in a language to learn it, and I am assuming that is what he did. I did not have a chance to go into his life story just like I won't go into mine. So let's just assume that neither I nor the man in question fabricated this tale, thank you. Do they dislike the US? Depends on who you ask. Many do not hold ill will towards us just as many americans feel that way towards the Chineese people. The body that decides the host city for any Olympic (tm) event is the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are in charge of deciding all of the major facets of Olympic (tm) events. While I find it interesting that they do consider political issues in their voting, it apparently has not been a major factor in all cases. Site quality and readiness appear to be key in dictating site. Look back over the years and what cities and coutries have hosted, then look at what was going on politically at the time. A good example is when Germany hosted before WWII. Russia hosted in 1980 and Los Angeles four years later. If anything, the IOC tries not to let politics get in the way too much, because it is an event for friendly competition. If it became too political the games would collapse once again. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 19:37:12 -0500 From: "bad bender" Subject: Re: Slavery and the wisdom old age brings I think he meant that as long as we work for other people and owe money we will always be slaves to our jobs, having to work the "fields" in our own way to keep alive and happy. Does - --> You have got to be kidding me. Black History Month is about celebrating the accomplishments and the successes of a group of people who were systematically oppressed and discriminated against to the point of being second class citizens and/or relegated to chattle. The constitution even defined slaves as 3/5 of a person, and the Supreme Court ruled that as NOT a full person, slaves had no rights (and as the majority of slaves were of African descent, I'm speaking for them). Bottom line is, when you learn about the great leaders of tyhis country and US history, very little is mentioned about african americans, except within the context of slavery. Black History Month is about recognizing that people of african descent were viable, successful, and important members of our society that deserve to be recognized and remembered. Regardless of what anyone thinks, or "how far we've come", to many people, being of african descent (gotta love that one drop rule) is EQUAL to being inferior, substandard and worthless. > it matter that Fredrick Douglas was black? Is that his only claim to fame? > Or was it his deeds and strong moral convictions that we should remember? - --> Do you know anything about Jim Crow and the legacy of slavery as it pertains to prejudice, stereotypes and institutional racism? It's important because he was a BLACK man who did good deeds AND had strong moral convictions. This seems obvious to you and me that those two things aren't mutually exclusive, but to MANY people, a black person can't possibly be an intelligent, productive member of society. There are still people (MANY people) who think, say, and believe things like: 1. Blacks can't compete with whites. 2. Blacks aren't as smart or capable as whites. (i.e. "she only got in because of affirmative action") And don't get me started on the "black women on welfare" and the "all black men are criminals" stereotype. I understand your frustration, but try to see it from the other side. If you tell a child that it's stupid, lazy, and ugly all of it's life, just how do you expect that child to feel abouyt themselves? And even if they "grow into an adult" and develop some self esteem, deep down, they'll always have doubts about who they are and their self worth. Multiply that times an entire ethnic group. Imagine being told for generations that who you are and everything you'll become is nothing and is completely worthless. Every day, hour, minute. Pretty pervasive. Black History Month is about learning to love and accept who you are in spite of the systematic debasement and rejection of who you are. Something you can't ever change. In finding strength in your history, appreciation of how far you've come, and celebrating your hopes for the future. Have you seen the movie American History X? Most people will never understand the very real and persistent fear that stays in the back of my mind. That there are people everywhere in this country who would have no compunction about putting a bullet in my brain - solely because of my skin color. I never thought deeply about it, until there was a cross burning in an interracial couple's yard less than 5 blocks from my parents house. I don't want to be hired for a job just because I'm part of a minority, I actually find that quite insulting. I want to be hired for my qualifications, not because of my skin color. If I was the owner of a business, I would want to hire the person who is most qualified for the job, I don't care what race they are. - ---Jobe - --- bad bender wrote: > How can one nation survive and grow together when > one group is hated, > celebrated or otherwise treated differently based on > non-merit things? > Affirmative action? Actually I introduced myself to them, she just told me that breakable is one of theirs, and I like that one. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 01:10:35 -0400 From: "Joshua Panther" Subject: Re: to the americans on the list.... > for one thing. A country built on commercialism and fake ppl > deserves a joke for a president. AMericans (for the most part) are ignorant. Ok. If we're nitpicking here then you're wrong too. Yes. Christmas is a very old celebration. Yes, it's a very old christian celebration. It is NOT, though, a very old christian celebration as a result of the birth of christ. If it was it would be celebrated in the springtime I believe. Christmas claims to be a celebration of the birth of christ when in fact it is a holiday created to replace a pagan holiday (the name of which escapes me at the moment, as I am only a Jew). Much like Easter was created to replace the celebration of (I believe) the vernal equinox. You can go ahead and take claim (or blame as the case may be) for the invasions and colonizations. I wouldn't be too proud of that if I were you. As for the large dominancy of the English language, we can share that one. You guys may have sent your soldiers to go take over countries and rape their women to populate them but it was our pop culture that was embraced by the world at large, even those countries (like Japan) that you barely touched. Sure, we drove the native americans from their homeland, committing genocide and all that good stuff, but it's no different than what you did in India. Besides, those weren't really Americans that did that. Those were European (mostly British) colonials. I'm not a nationalist by any stretch of the imagination. I don't like my government. I don't trust my government. I think the majority of our citizenry falls prey to a socialization that leaves them ignorant and easily led. But your country's background isn't that great either.
