Does anyone know if there is any official gatherings of the Dallas APs other than the pre-show dinner with the DM people at Spaghetti Warehouse? This is all I've been informed of, and I'm on Erik's list. I had heard preliminary rumors of an after-show party at Lizard Lounge from Jessie at KDGE, but nothing has been confirmed to me by a local coordinator. Of course, I will be attending the HOL discussion group tomorrow evening at the Fretz Park branch of the Dallas Public Library at which Mark and Poe will be in attendance. If anyone knows of any other gatherings, including soundcheck (which I'm assuming is not happening, given the DM security issues), please email me! Saw that our friendly Poe site has become the location for debate of politics and human rights. Have a little to contribute to that commentary... Isn't it amazing how years later we all manage to see how oppressive our society can be but at the time it seemed a necessary fashion? Slavery kept the wealthy on top and provided labor for our spanisve growing needs as a "new world" without payment. Seems much in the same fashion that the early colonists broke their backs to make England a wealthier nation. And no one wanted to give women the vote because that would put them on the same playing field as the men (which I believe we women have done a fine job with in the past century). Everyone is clamoring about China and their prisons (hey that's never a NICE place to be); the child labor (until China is not a third world country and is able to float economically, it will not have social programs that enable parents to provide for familes); and political viewpoints (but let the USA enlighten them on the inalienable rights of life liberty and persuit of happiness while we are still trying to get it right)! Meanwhile, here on our own home soil, we have found a new group to oppress and a new way to do so. We can't just ridicule people in the streets anymore, or deny them jobs because our laws have made certain that no matter what a person's gender, race, religion or sexual preferance is we can not discriminate-- afterall, that is what we based our country's laws on. But I would like to say that's all bullshit. The gays and lesbians of this country, most of them enormous contributors to our economic and cultural subsistence, continue to be oppressed by being denied the right to concecrate their love to another person. In fact, while some states enact laws enabling same-sex partners to get health benenfits and parental leave other groups (likely threatened byt the idea that gay people might someday be able to MARRY if this continue are AT THIS MOMENT planning an amendment to the consitution to block any state from passing such a law! Do people think that this will make gay people GO AWAY? Or perhaps, more if they could marry, MORE people would BECOME gay? Throughout history it is estimated that eight percent of any populace is homosexual. Just Friday it was published that a study found that Dolphins have same-sex relations. At this point in our society, it is rightly accepted that homosexuals are equals and have the rights to the same jobs, opportunities, educations and public services as everyone else. But isn't the issue that people have with homosexuals really about who they love? Therefore, to oppose their right to marry is really an oppression of who they are just as we did with blacks and women. If you agree with my statements and believe in everyone's rights to the persuit of life, liberty and happiness, please visit: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/0712t001/petition.html Please block the oppression of people. The slaves were used for farm and plantation work, something that helped build this country up, yet has not sustained it in any way. We are here because of the capitalist endeavor to create new renovations, inventions, and wealth that has made this country traditionally very accepting and has provided everybody with jobs at various levels. And the regarding the persecution of the former slaves, that is a huge and utter bullshit. Though they were discriminated against by certain members of the south and denied equal rights, as early as one generation after reperations, blacks were able to acheive middle class and upper middle class status in great numbers. Until the great depression, almost the entire resturaunt industry was owned by black people. So what about how blacks have benifited since the end of slavery? First of all, the US is one of the few countries to recognize the terrors of slavery and suffered the bloodiest war in its history in order to abolish it. SO where is the "Thank you". America is the MOST TOLERANT OF ALL COUNTRIES, EVEN AFRICAN ONES toward black people. IF you feel so opressed, try living life in africa where you wont only be opressed, but killed solely for coming from the wrong tribe. What the hell does this have to do with slavery? Why is it that every time international relations and human rights are discussed somebody feels compelled to dig up the slavery issue? I swear to God, it is the most intellectually lazy method of argumentation. Why not discuss current cleavages in the US? Police brutality, de facto segregation and our failure to abolish the death penalty are all good discussion points. The only problem is, in the case of USA vs China, all of our transgressions are matched and exceeded ten fold by China. In the last three months China has executed more people than all other nations have in the last three years combined. Members of the Falung Gong movement, Christians, Muslims, Hindus and certain kinds of Buddists are persecuted and some are killed for not having state approved beliefs. While I was in China, I met a man who learned english by reading the Bible. As a result, he felt compelled to make Christianity his faith. He informed me that he had to practice in secret because it co! uld cost him everything he had, including his life. The idea that these recent examples of China's behavior are on the same level with those of the US in any capacity is foolish. The US during the years of slavery was more just than China is today. China is not yet ready for the Olympics nor deserving of them. They have to invest a minimum of 20 billion dollars in infrastructure just to near readiness (though I bet it will cost much more). The traffic, lack of facilities and horrible pollution make attending and competeting in the games at this point in time, unrealistic. The main reason why they got it (in a very close vote), was mainly because a) the other potential host cities were in even less prepared for an Olympic event b) this is supposed to be the proverbial carrot dangled in Chinas face to draw them towards better behavior. It seems unlikely that China will change simply for an Olympic event. They will probably sweep some of its dirtier behaviours under the rug until after the games have closed. In this case, I would love to be wrong, hopefully China proves to be the nation it is capable of than the nation it currently is. Ok I had to stop you here. The civil was not just about slavery. Reported history would like people to think slavery had a bigger part in the conflict than it actually had. The civil was about secession. The southern states wanted to split from the north and the north wanted to keep the country together. Abraham Lincoln stated that if he could keep America together and not free a single slave, he would. In fact the emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in seceding states. This meant that if you sided with the north you got to keep your slaves... period. In this way slaves were used as a tool to leverage the states that were trying to play both sides. I have come across other historical conjecture that presents an interesting "what if" scenario. What if the civil war never happened? With the industrial revolution mechanizing agricultural processes, e.g. Eli Whitney's cotton jinn, slavery, would have ceased to be an economical institution in its form at that time. I firmly believe that we as a nation would have eventually gotten around to abolishing it. The civil war certainly speeded the process along. But "the bloodiest war in history" wasn't fought over weather one man could own another, it was fought to keep the United States united. - --- cthulhu9@ucla.edu wrote: First of all, > the US is one of the few countries to recognize the > terrors of slavery and suffered the bloodiest war in > its history in order to abolish it. As a historian, I have to reject claims of a debt owed based on crimes against ancestors... Regardless of who you are, someone in your family tree owned slaves of one kind or another. Someone in your family stole legally owned land (recently if you are Israeli) from its rightful owner. Someone in your family killed someone else (that would already be dead by now). History is about change in ownership and death. Empires rise and empires fall. All disharmony betweeen intermingled cultures ever causes is the destruction of both. Dwelling in historical issues is the grit which wear away the the threads of civility around the world. Everytime I think about the fact that 330,000 people were executed in Yugoslavia because of ethnic and historical reasons, it makes me sick. Yeah, America may have a few inequalities but deal with it. Watch a few kids starve to death in Africa... Watch a few folks that you have shared dinner with get blown away by a sniper from a rival faction. These are issues. The original line og this discussion was on China. How many of you have ever even met someone living in the PRC? I have and once the politics are placed aside, they are just people like you and me. Okay, their government has severe human rights issues but things are improving. Just how free are people here in the US when you critically analyse it? Exposure and exchange help foster understanding on both parts. By the way, while we are on the subject, the British owe me personally for the subjugation of my family's lands in Scotland for 800 years... So if any of you bump into Prince William, I am waiting. I am also still waiting for that personalized note of apology from the Empire of Japan and the Third Reich... Every single great empire has been built "on the backs of slavery." I don't care if you are black white whatever, slavery exist all across this world, and will continue to exist; the Bible even dictates rules for slavery (try looking in deuteronomy http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=NIV) and the do's and don'ts. You also have to consider that some slaves were compensated for their work. Not all of the slavery was outright, some slaves had rights to do things on various plantations. I have been doing civil war re-enacting for about 3 years now and have researched a number of things about this country's shady past. Now slavery is wrong in a lot of cases, but in third world countries (and other developing nations) slavery is sometimes a nessacary instution (even though the chinese have never been the most tolerant of human rights) that holds the societies economy above water. We also have another idea that is being missed completely by a lot of people; westerners have no, zero, notta, none at all understanding of eastern cultures. In all of the years that I have studied Eastern society and all of the understanding and respect that i do have for the culture, I know that I will never have a true understanding of how they think. Even if I studied the culture for twenty years, I would always be on the outside in their minds, and never accepted, tollerated yes, but never accepted into the culture. The Chinese have a very effective lifestyle that works for them and keeps things going, who are we as Americans to dictate to others how they should or should not act. Jeez, we are getting as bad as Christianity was in the past. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 16:57:42 -0500 From: "bad bender" Subject: NPR: Slavery- Damn the man, fight the power! Benefited from the oppression of blacks? Blacks weren't the only slaves in this country , they were just the majority. White's weren't the only slave holders either. This country was built by the blood, sweat and tears of many people and they freedom we now enjoy as a nation was and is being paid for by Americans everywhere. People so often give speeches about unity and America being a "melting pot" of cultures and about how we are all equal. I wonder why then these same people want to celebrate their diversity by giving one group a special month (yes I an referring to Black History Month) and have different days or months to celebrate non-merit things. Does it matter that Fredrick Douglas was black? Is that his only claim to fame? Or was it his deeds and strong moral convictions that we should remember? What about Tiger Woods? When he won the PGA (is that right? I don't watch golf) people were acting like they were surprised a "black man" won. I was surprised such a young guy won it. If slavery is so bad then PLEASE PLEASE protest the many countries in Africa where it is still happening right now as you read this. Remember the ship full of kids a month or two ago? Where are the protests? Where are the special interest groups and where's PETA!? Those people aren't eating berries, they're eating meat! Have a great night, I'm gonna grill me some hotdogs and have a big bowl of baked beans. later! > --> Anyone who lives in this country hasto recognize the fact that every > penny of this countries' wealth was created by the backs of > slaves. What the hell does this have to do with slavery? >In the last three months China has executed more people than all other nations have in the last three years combined. ...It doesn't seem possible for one nation, in 3 months, to kill more than every other nation in the world combined, in 3 years! If your right, then that's really terrible... I can't believe that many people were killed. Where did you find that information?... >While I was in China, I met a man who learned english by reading the Bible. That's what I don't get! How do you look at a book in a language totally foreign to you, and eventually learn it?! I've got CDs and booklets in Chinese, and I doubt if I stared at it for a year I'd learn anything! He MUST have had another Bible in Chinese. But if they persecute people for their Christian beliefs... why would they allow Chinese Bibles to be printed?! Another thing is... do they like Americans? I would think not, yet everything there is in both Chinese and English, and if you listened to their music (not traditional), It sounds one hell of a lot like ours (copy cat...Though honestly, I can't say I have anything against their music because I love Faye Wong...btw)!!! Not to change the subject but, does anyone know if the Japanese persecute against christianity? I don't think so... their main religion is Shinto, yet all the j-pop and j-rock singers wear crosses... um, is this a fad? The other thing is: Why do they celebrate Christmas?!?! I've noticed they have many Christmas concerts and shows where everyone sings Christmas songs! Now I really hate to base this on a TV show, but whatever: In one of my favorite anime's, the main character is a training to become a Shinto priest, and his grandfather is a highly respected one... THEY ALSO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!!! What's up with that? Why? Is it just for fun? ~Andrea ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V6 #299 ***********************************
