Like you said they still have the digital copies. So the material would not be utterly lost. So now it is just a matter of determining who owns the rights to the material, of which I believe the scales tip far towards Poe and her team. Furthermore, why on earth would this chap force you to come up with the money in only 24 hours instead of a more reasonable time frame? What is the big rush? Is this some sort of ransom? Are we holding tapes hostage? He seems very unscrupulous. Anyone who would make demands of that nature cannot be a very trustworthy or reputable individual. And lastly, someone for god's sake needs to tell Poe immediately. Would it be better for him to sell it all and for her to find out after the fact when it eventually surfaces that everyone but her was privvy to all this? As you stated, this is her material after all, and shielding her from this information only does her a great disservice. Furthermore, hiding something of this magnitude will only cause her to distrust you guys when she eventually does find out. And besides, she should be allowed the most input as to how she wants this problem handled. It should really be her decision how she wishes to deal with it, and not yours, though I know your intentions are supremely noble. (Perhaps I'm wrong on this one?) Either way, most of the waitresses I know only report somewhere around 10%, legal or no. But that's not really what I wanted to discuss. My question is thus (you international AP's, here's your time to shine): Is tipping a common practice outside of the United States and Canada? Last summer I went on a United States Music Ambassadors trip with a bunch of other high school kids from central PA to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. We were in England, I believe, at a family-type restaurant (nothing extravagant, but not fast-food), and were unsure whether it was customary or not to leave a tip. If I remember correctly, I think we left a few pounds on the table for our waitress, but the question still remains: is tipping customary in countries such as these? Would the amount/percentage of the tip be about the same as it is here in the U.S.? Just curious, :). ===== Shanna Hollich - Shadow123@poe.org AOL IM: RHFoJO shadow123.diaryland.com NO S N B- C~ L- O++ CV Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! The 10% thing you are talking about is 10% of actual sales. Most restaurants track individual server sales .. so if you serve 1000.00 in food and drinks .. with the 10% rule.. you would claim 100.00 in tips . This is not legal.. but a very common practice. That 100.00 is then taxed on the next paycheck. A fulltime waitress often OWES money when payday comes. Of course they have their tips so it all works out in the end. I think the average person does tip around 15% . Another thing alot of people don't know is that the waitress also has to tip the bartender , busboys , and even the hostess staff . I work in a high end restaurant ( although I'm on leave to spend time with the kids) . At the end of each night.. we have to run a report of sales and tip support staff according to sales. Most places I have worked have a mandatory 3 - 5 % of sales for tip out .... regardless of how much you actually made. As for tipping in other countries .. all that info can be found here .... http://dest.travelocity.com/Tips/Item/0,3295,_TRAVELOCITY_65,00.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 12:06:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Lok Tina Subject: Re: No Subject You like Le arc en ciel? Yesterday I went to Chili's and the check was $21 and I tipped $6 something dollars. I've had friends that are like "tipping is extra is not madatory" These people make $2/hr most states having tipping laws. It's not extra, it's rude not to tip. Thank you and good night. Megan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 13:27:34 -0600 (MDT) From: indigofaerie Subject: NPR: waitressing/minimum wage it doesn't matter what "minimum wage" is. waitresses and waiters, and sometimes bartenders, in most states, do NOT make minimum wage. people are not aware of this, and this is where the problem comes in. people who have never worked in the food industry have no idea that waitstaff DO make only $2.13/hour... and count on tips as the main source of income, and as jez was saying, get taxed as if they were tipped even if they are not tipped at all, or tipped low. someone said, "i cannot afford to tip ($x) every time i go out..." - ok, that's fine, but you should be tipping 15% minimum when you are going out. there's no reason not to. if you are racking up a $20 tab just for you (which is a lot, i think, probably more than average, but let's say it's average...) you only owe a $3 tip, if you're tipping 15% straight. that's really not much if you think about it FOR YOU - $3 for you, but for the waitstaff who are serving you, it makes a big difference, because they're being taxed AS IF you tipped them well, even if you tip shitty or not at all. i have personally never worked in the food industry, but i've had lots of friends and loved ones who have, and i've heard all their complaints, but even before i heard them, i had a personal policy to tip well. it's one of those "not that big a deal to me but definitely a big deal to the other person" things... you know, an extra few bucks doesn't make that big a hole in my budget, but it really helps someone who is on his/her feet all day and making sure my eating experience is comfortable and i have what i need, to the best of their ability... so i usually tip 20-25% and sometimes more.... once when i went to chili's alone, the waitress was really nice... didn't give me weird looks or anything since i was alone, as sometimes happens.. took care of me, got me the right food with the stuff i asked for, and without the stuff i asked to not have, you know, i am one of those picky types... well, my bill came to $10 and i left $20, a 100% tip, because i felt like it. hehe. and if you get crappy service, you pay the tip and tell the manager. that's just how it works. if you don't tip, the waiter or waitress DOESN'T think "oh, i've been bad, i'll get better" (which is the message you WANT to send by not tipping, right?) - they think, "what a rude customer." that doesn't solve any problems. if your true goal is to improve the service, leave the tip and tell the manager. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 15:33:51 -0400 From: "sp00k@poe.org" Subject: NPR: China Gets Olympics? I'm always reminding her that wait staff don't make minimum wage, and certainly deserve better than what she leaves. She always says "They should get a better paying job, then." Last time it came up, I replied that if all wait staff took her advice, who the hell would there be left to provide the pristine service she demands? I love her to bits, but this sort of thinking really steams me... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 15:50:02 -0400 From: "Marnell, Christina Marie" Subject: RE: China Gets Olympics? ha ha ha ha....Damn Red Bastards!!! I agree it's good to tip but it should be viewed as a bonus instead of expected. I tip good for good service mind you but it isn't my job to pay the help's salary especially when they are taking care of 5 or 6 other tables besides mine. If my $5 minimum tip isn't enough and is a insult they should do all they can to return my insulting money to me, catch me in the parking lot and give it back otherwise press on and give great service to the other customers. If getting low tips makes it not worth their time then quit and go to a job that doesn't involve having your pay supplemented my the kindness of strangers.
