People love to blame corporate america first and foremost, but people at the grassroots level are the ones perpetuating hate, oppression, discrimination, and covert racism generation after generation. By accepting it and thinking "oh its so obvious and no one really believes xyz" we're all kidding ourselves. Thats why every single day we have to examine the issues. The real issues. for example, everyone cries a river for human rights violations in other countries, forgetting about teh USs own lurid past concerning human rights. You know, that little event called SLAVERY? Most people feel, "oh, that was AGES ago, and things are different now, so we should forget all about it" Like because we're a superpower and 'civilized', etc etc we somehow have evolved faster and more completely than other countries. Boy are we in a deep area of denial. Through talking with numerous types of people, I've found that most have no concept of slavery and the pervasive nature of institutional covert racism that has been perpetuated in this country generation after generation. Couple this with the effects of slavery (also pervasive and perpetuated whether anyone wants to talk about it or not), you've got one big problem that no one wants to dirty their hands with. > Until more people start complaining, we will be stuck with that ads. In fact, anyone looking fora histroy lesson from Hollywood has some issues in and of themselves. And since when are Americans good at telling the complete side of a story. As an example, our entire history (taught to generation after generation of children year after year) is that we declared war on Britain due to unfair taxation by the King. But, after studying the history of Canada, the other side becomes crystal clear. The Thirteen colonies belong to Britain. Britain had spent many many dollars defending the colonies from the Natives, as well as the French. Not to mention BUILDING the colonies, providing food, and other supplies. Once the colonies became solvent (cotton, anyone? tobacco?) Britain increased taxes on teh colonies to help pay for their own existence. They felt they had every right to make the colonies start to support themselves, a recoup on investment if you will. Now, whether they were right or wrong isn't particularly the issue. The issue for me is that this alternate point of view isn't even TAUGHT in public schools. Just anohter brainwashing of the masses if you ask me. i mean, conformity has its privileges, and the very nature of it goes against the concept of critical thinking..but I digress... > > Zulu, Xhosa, etc. tribal women topless with no problem. - --> Of course, because tribal women aren't really women, you know. (which, as far as i know, and i have followed both tori amos and melissa ferrick for well over 5 years... and i know of neither of them doing anything together) these would be the similarities: * POE is on atlantic * tori amos is on atlantic * melissa ferrick had 2 albums with atlantic back in the early '90's * melissa ferrick has a song called "drive" * "drive" appears in a remix form on her last double live cd, "skinnier & faster..." * the drive remix includes the use of the musical instrument called a moog * tori amos has used a moog in her works before and THAT would be the 6 degrees of seperation between the 3 artists. as far as melissa ferrick goes, check cdnow or cdbaby.com. she has several discs, i would reccomend "willing to wait", "freedom" or her lastest release "valentine heartache". be aware though, that "willing to wait" was her last release with atlantic, and is a bit more "souped up" in production, and does not really represent her the way she is now, almost 7 years later. she has 2 live cds... "melissa ferrick + 1" is excellent, and the lastest "skinnier & faster..." is excellent as well, and includes the "drive" (mk's mood remix) as a bonus track. both of her live recordings are just her & her guitar. check her out live if you can, she is amazing... and i liked the comparison i heard earlier, "she plays guiter like tori amos plays piano"... very true! on tour, she has been with playing around with her (hottie!) drummer brian. she has toured with various other musicians with her like a bass player, etc. you can join her mailing list (& like some one said before, do the digest unless you want a million emails) at smoe.org... it's on the same server as this wonderful POE list. here are some links: www.melissaferrick.com www.rightonrecords.com (i believe both are the same web page.. or atleast they are now) later psychos... - -rusty www.rustyisdabomb.com the web site | agentorange2@mindspring.com | rusty@poe.org ***************************************************************************** ********************************* Jennifer Nettles Band: www.jennifernettles.com | www.jennifernettlesband.com | ON TOUR ***************************************************************************** ********************************* POE: "Haunted" the album, featuring, "Hey Pretty" & "Wild" | www.p-o-e.com ON TOUR NOW with Depeche Mode | www.buffybb.net/poe | www.polishchick.com ***************************************************************************** ********************************* Amanda Ghost: "Ghost Stories" the album, featuring, "Idol" & "Silver Lining" www.wbr.com/amandaghost | www.amandaghost.net | www.amandaghost.cjb.net/ ***************************************************************************** ********************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 15:09:47 EDT From: Litesneeze@aol.com Subject: Re: Rock Hall Confusion... Ok experts! Download the mp3 from the cleveland show from navelsex! Here's a question of my own -- there's mp3s from something called.... what... "Shooters" or Cleveland... one of the two.. It says "Control (complete)" and another one ".... (complete)," yet neither of them are. The sound quality's pretty damn good. If someone could shed some light on this, I'd be a mighty happy man! This might work for Win95 as > well if you do a search for Desktop Thremes when you get to the update site > for Win95 at Microsoft. > Once you have the desktop themes manager, you can install a new theme you have downloaded easily. If it is an application program, just click it and it will install itself. If it is a zip file, then when you unzip it extract the files to C:/Program Files/Plus!/themes and you will then be able to select the theme from the theme manager. To select a theme, go into control panel/Desktop Themes and click the little arrowhead thingie next to the little window where the name of the current theme is displayed. This will show a list of all the available themes. Just select the one you want and then click "apply". If you can't get Microsoft Plus! for some reason, there is a shareware/freeware theme manager called "Desktop Architect" you can easily find online. It may be even better than the Microsoft version as far as features, but it doesn't always work as well. Have fun...there are tons and tons of free desktop themes on the internet too...just about anything you can think of...from Wiccan to rock-stars to sci-fi to fine art. While you are at it, find and download a tiny program called "Desksweeper". It will put this little monitor icon in your lower right system tray. When you click it, you can toggle your desktop icons on/off so you can look at your theme wallpaper without anything else in the way. You can also right-click Desksweeper and get a menu for other stuff like Windows Explorer, shut down the computer, etc. You also select the "start desksweeper when Windows starts" from there. What is > this person talking about? > > Elaine melissa ferrick was on atlantic at the time when her 1st cd came out women in music was a positive thing then, by the time her second cd came out, women were fading in the popularity of the music industry. it was all about nirvana and pearl jam. atlantic dropped her. then we went through women's popularity in music again, whith poe, bjork, tori amos, sarah mclachaln, sheryl crow, alanis morissette, jewel, the lilith fair, etc. then, once again, men dominated the charts. POE was one of the first to break through this time around... with amanda ghost and nelly furtado (if you haven't heard of any of those 3 ladies, then you know how big their "breakthrough" is)... now melissa is better than ever, an independant artist, and probably has a stronger fan base than ever before. atlantic is seeing the same with POE right now as they saw with melissa in 95.. she has a strong fan base, is selling records, but not as many as limp bizcuit, crazy town, moby, fuel, etc. if atlantic can replace her with another male, they will. when POE's disc "haunted" came out on halloween 2000, the first single was "walk the walk"... atlantic reps actually called radio stations and asked then NOT to play the POE track, intead to play one of their male bands such as stone temple pilots. - -rusty ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V6 #288 ***********************************
