I know that many of you aren't Californians and that this isn't a political forum, but if this strikes a chord with you and you're not Californian, then I hope you pass on this message to your friends from California. (I really don't want to start a debate here, as there is so much Poeness going on right now, but I wanted to get this information out there for those whom it would concern.) I'm working with the ACLU of Southern California to promote the passage of a domestic rights bill called AB 25. Passage of the bill would mean that same-sex couples who register as domestic partners would get many of the same rights as married couples do, such as inheritance rights, health coverage tax exemption, sick leave for partner care, disability insurance, medical decision-making, and more. To me, the issue isn't so much about politics as it is about equal rights; I think that gay and lesbian couples should have the same safety and financial nets that married couples do. This bill is a step in the right direction. AB 25 has already passed in the State Assembly, and we are looking for constituents' support to ask the governor to sign it into law. More info: http://www.aclu-sc.org/newactivism/dompartnavfinal.html If you support this law, please email me and I'll add you to the petition list. I need your full name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. That information will be used to send a postcard in your name to Governor Gray Davis, stating your support of the bill. You don't need to do anything else; I just need your info to do the rest for you! (Who knew activism could be so easy?) Thanks for reading, and let me know if you want to know anything else about the bill. Also, if you have friends whom you think would support this bill, please let them know about this bill by forwarding my email. I absolutely adore ms ferrick, she is one of my favorite singers right now. I saw her last month (and will see her two more times this summer-can't wait) and it was one of the best performances i have ever seen. i was expecting a folk show, and it turned out to be the most rockin show!!! it was in a quiet seated fancy folk venue, and everyone was on their feet dancing and screaming. She had just shaved her head and she looked fab... her guitar playing...wow...she has bypassed carrie brownstein as the guitar goddess of my world. she plays guitar like tori plays piano and let's just say she had this gay boy requestioning his sexuality ;) Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 07:18:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Alex Richardson Subject: NPR: Movie rant Let me begin by saying that I got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and needed to ven a little. Ok... ...So tell me do they play 10 minutes of commercials every time you go to the movies? I don't mean previews I mean Jeep, mountain dew, Pepsi commercials? They sure do here in Portland Oregon. Its starting to piss me off. Why the heck would I want to pay ever-increasing movie entrance prices only to be forced to watch a bunch of crap about products I don't want? If they are going to have those things at the beginning of the film then charge less. Its like how cable started. In the beginning there were no commercials then they started selling the time to companies because they had a captive viewing audience. Whats next? Commercial breaks in the middle of feature films? I don't get the Gaul of some people. The average length of movies is shrinking. It has been since the late 80's a 2.5-hour film is a rarity these days and your ass tells you so. Now you pay almost double the price for a little over half the time and to fill in the gaps we are running extended TV adds. Don't get me wrong, watching the full version of the Brittany Spears Bob Dole add has its high points. Those little girl eyes that say "I'm innocent but I really want to be bad that flowing blond hair, those youthful medically enhanced breasts in a push up bodice yearning to breath free, her rippling computer enhanced (airbrushed) abs, the whole glossy flashy pierced gyrating package in slow motion, speeded up a ways past normal time only to fall away again in speed to a stop motion freeze frame 3D spin around computer enhanced affect. All this and not a whole lot more for $7.75. The whole time I'm watching this blinding display of youth gone wild I'm not thinking about how this is objectifying women. I'm not thinking about how this is giving our teen daughters and sisters a distorted and potentially destructive body image. All I can think of is where's the beef? I mean I paid admission to a rated R movie. Give me some rated R commercials. Instead of painted on Jeans lets just have some body paint. Paint her naked ass like a Pepsi can. That would bring people to mediocre films. The movies are violent so gimme some death in the commercials. Instead of having an extended pictorial romp in faded out color proclaiming there is only one mother there is only one missing link there is only one bla bla bla there is only one jeep. Gimme Ahnuld baby smoking a big ass cigar hanging half out the window of the new jeep steering with one hand while shooting a .50 caliber desert eagle at the machine gun toting bad guys who never seem to hit our hero or his shiny silver SUV. Let's see the Trojan man. Enough of this veiled behind radio BS. Let him bust in on some real in living color people about ready to do the nasty. It all boils down to getting more. Give me something that I can't get on TV. Give me Titts, ass, death, dismemberment, then tell me to buy your products. I wish they would just put some effort into what they are pushing. I'm all about creativity. Good morning everyone! The balcony is closed. Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! About 7 or 8 AP's made it to Fellinis for the pre-show festivities. We even had 2 women drive in from Anderson South Carolina. We had a good time and all headed out to the show about the same time. The set was good, if not REALLLY short, about 30 minutes. She closed with "5-1/2 minute hallway", and Mark was there for 'hey pretty". He had on a different 'pimp' outfit than the On the Bricks show, so I guess he has a collection now. She got major points though for during Haunted, she jumped the security fence (her road manager about freaked!) and ran into the crowd letting fans sing the "ba da ba ba" part. She stopped no less than 5 times and worked her way to the lawn. Major kudos for showing major love to her fans. The sound kinda sucked and I heard they only gave her one shot at a sound check, so that was kinda lousy. After Poe left the stage we all went out to the backstage entrance area in hopes of a meet and greet. Siggy came out and so did Nate and the DJ, but Poe was worn out. Turns out her monitors died and she had no idea how loud she was singing, so she wore herself out. That combined with the early morning interview and she was toast for the night. We weren't very disappointed, she looked a little whipped on stage, so we understood. In true Psycho style we all waited in the rain for any glimmer of hope to meet our lady, but alas. Oh, Depeche Mode was pretty good too, I stood outside in the rain (hoping for Poe) and I missed the first half of the set, but they didn't play most of my favorite songs anyway. Dave G puts on one hell of a show and the place was jumping. I'll remember more later, I'm going on 4 hours sleep now. I grew up overseas, in South Africa. Because television was very limited, movies were preceded with 30-40 minutes of commercials include several cigarette "short films", usually the adventures of overly handsome people smoking cigarettes on the French Rivera. What's worse - due to the racist, bigoted, sexist politics of South Africa in those days, all films were censored, no sex, not much violence, no women in control situations (women could not own property or their own bank accounts if married) no non-whites in positions of power, and absolutely no dark people kissing white people (you could not stage Othello...). And certainly no films about Stephen Biko or Martin Luther King. Plus we had the most convoluted rating system is the world (about 12 different ratings of age groups, parental attendance etc.). Fortunately, I learnt how to play hooky from school and go downtown during the day to see T&A movies which were NC21 and enjoy the heavily edited movies flicks they did let in. Nothing too exciting to see since they were rated R movies from Britain and US that they lifted whole sections of the movie right out. If they could not, they just fuzzed the picture (e.g. the Jerry Springer view). (I was a teenager, my taste in movies was pretty bad at this time - had not discovered Kubrick or Kurosawa yet) And in the ultimate racist irony/Freudian slip, the equivalent "Playboy" in South Africa was a magazine called Star (creatively called that because they showed topless white women with big star censor cutouts over the nipples as it was illegal show white nipples) but they sold postcards to children of Zulu, Xhosa, etc. tribal women topless with no problem. So watch you damn 10 minutes of Coke and Levi commercials before seeing Halle Berry topless in Swordfish and just be glad we don't live in Saudi Arabia... My calendar has big red X's from my daughters , 14 and 12 , counting down the days. They woke up this morning and cleaned their rooms without being asked !!! It is 1:10 pm here in Alaska.. and my daughters have changed their clothes at least 10 times today. That's not counting the hours they spent going thru their wardrobe yesterday . They were up until about 3 am braiding their hair. The phone has been ringing non stop from jealous friends begging for the extra ticket ( which I gave to another child long ago ) . So, tonight , while you are all making your plans to see Poe... I will be sitting in an arena with 5000 screaming little girls living their dream. I am actually kinda excited . I have never seen my girls so happy. They are going to 98 degrees and the world is good. I got dressed to go to the store .. and my daughter screamed... you're not wearing THAT to the concert ... Mom, you HAVE to dress COOL !!!!!! No, I am not wearing THIS to the concert..... I'm wearing my Poe shirt :-) Pray for me... ~jez :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 17:29:16 EDT From: Finedragonfly7@aol.com Subject: Re: Poe on TV! Jacoby" Subject: A Poe-tic evening Okay, so Satyrday afternoon I arrive at the National Car Rental Center near Ft. Lauderdale about 3pm. The show doesn't begin until 8pm, but I have my sights on two pre-show goals: meet Poe, and meet Depeche Mode. It's been drizzling, so the weather is humid and dank as I B.S. my way into the arena parking lot. Walking around, umbrella in one hand and a small bag with some stuff for autographs in the other, I find my way to the back of the arena where the big loading bay is. I see two silver tour buses and one white tour bus, but I'm blocked by a huge Gestapo chain fence! The only entrance is manned by a security guard who says I definitely won't be allowed in without the proper authority pass. Foo. I resolve to stand around on the curb next to fence. After about 20 minutes of sweating profusely in the humid and hot weather, I spot someone on the second level of the arena looking out over the loading bay. I decide to walk around and up to see who it is, and it turns out to be a woman hoping to meet Depeche Mode. We have a good view of the buses and loading area from up here and spend about 10 minutes waiting and chatting when around the corner, walking right past the curb I was standing at only a short while earlier, comes Poe and Mark on their way back from shopping at the huge mall across the street. I could kill myself for moving from that spot! AIE! I scream out her name, but she doesn't seem to hear me, so I take off running. By the time I get back downstairs to the fence, she's already in the bus. The WHITE bus. Now I know for sure which one is hers, and she's gotta come out sometime! So I continue to wait, the other woman joining me by the fence. She didn't know much about Poe, so I spent a few minutes enlightening her. :) At one point someone gets off the bus...an engineer or tour manager, or whomever...and we call out to him, asking if Poe will come out and autograph something for us. He says he'll ask her and re-boards the bus, emerging a minute later to explain that she's working on her vocal exercising and won't be coming out. Instead he offers to bring something in to her for autographing. Happily I squeeze my "Haunted" CD booklet through the fence and hand it to him; he comes back out a few minutes later with it autographed! WoohoO! It's says "Hi James!" with a cute caricature of herself saying, "What's up!" She's signed it and drawn X's and O's on the fingernails. It's so cute!! After that we run into someone else who wants to see Depeche Mode, and he's heard they'll be arriving at 5pm, so we all wait together. Right on schedule, 5pm, a limo and two vans pull around the corner and drive right past us and into the fenced area. They drive right up to the building entrance, and we see the band climb out and go right in. We're far away and barely have a decent view. :( My two companions (both from Atlanta) decide to head back to their respective hotels to get ready for the concert later. I stick around, determined. About 5:45pm, Poe exit the bus and heads for the building entrance, so I yell out to her from about 50 feet back... "Hey Poe!" "Hi!" she yells back! "Thanks for signing my CD booklet!" "You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the show." "I can't wait! Good luck!" "Rock on!" she yells back, holding up an I Love You hand sign. Happy happy I go back to my car and drive out for some dinner. The concert was fantastic! I was sitting in the 5th row, but when Poe came out on stage I darted right up to the front barrier to sing and hang out with the other 10-or-so folks who've done the same. I'm dead center in front of her, and she notices me and points right to me and mouths, "Hi!" I'm loving it! During the part of "Haunted" when she jumps off stage, she goes way out into the deep floor area before heading back and actually grasps my hand and holds it up before climbing back over the barricade and returning to the stage. My world has truly rocked. She played for 40 minutes and did the same set-list you've all seen by now, I'm sure. DM plays for two hours and, aside from the almost total lack of pre-90s material (save for "Black Celebration" and "Never Let Me Down Again"), satisfy me immensely. Afterwards I head right back down to the loading area to stand by that fence again. There are about 3 other Poe fans there and about 6 DM fans further down the fence. I hang with the Poe fans, gleefully relating my day to them. Suddenly, it's Poe! And she's walking towards the bus in front of us! We yell out, prompting her to turn around, and she comes right up to the fence to meet us!! She takes a CD booklet from one of the girls to sign an autograph when she recognizes me and says, "Hi! I remember you from up front! How did you like it?" Of course, I tell her how wonderful she was. I also ask about future touring, and she says there will be a headlining club tour later this year, but she's not sure where it'll take her yet... it's still in the planning stage. She also asks us if her show volume was mixed down a lot from DM's sound, concerned that it wasn't loud enough. She's right, her show wasn't nearly as loud as DM's was, but I was right up front benefitting the most from it, so I didn't mind. After signing a couple more things for people she says goodbye and heads back onto her bus. Soon I'm left with 3 people waiting for Depeche Mode. We have a good time hanging out together, but eventually we give up on waiting for DM. It's 1:30am. It's been a long day, and I have work in the morning. It was a very good night.
