I don't like to overanalyze books because it makes the whole experience less enjoyable and more like a 9th grade english class, but I am curious if anyone has a take on the Pekinese scene in terms of its meaning within the story. Obvoiously Johnny Truant associates himself with the dog, with a stray. Before the story when he yells at the guy in the tattoo shop, he describes himself as "howling, and loud too -real loud- spit sputtering off my lips, snot shooting out of my nose." The dog is described twice as having "snot pouring out of its pug nose." In examining why he felt uneasy about Johnnie, he postulated, "maybe it was the pekanese pup, hungry and abandoned, suddenly rescued, suddenly with hope; a projection of myself? My own place in the way of straydom? Maybe." Maybe. I am ALMOST DEFINITELY wrong (but it is only my opinion) but the tangent about his November and the women, which preceeds the pekinese story, leads me to think that a better comparison to the dog is the women he and Lude have sex with. All of them are strays- raped, abused, abandoned, looking for hope and rescue. And he just fucks them and that's it... thump... they are tossed out, dehumanized, de-dog-ized even. This is what it means to me when Johnny talks about the "emptiness" of one night stands, which is essentially the darkness: darkness is that force that is capable of taking away a human's esssence, of engulfing people in the same way it engulfed Tom's hand-puppet monsters on the wall, or perhaps, conversely darkness is a sort of "light" that shines on people and reveals the true vacuousness of their essence- the reality that they are just shadows on the wall, like Tom's monsters or Plato's forms. So anyway, to me Johnnie is akin to Johnny- both pretty sad excuses for "momma[s] to all strays." Like Johnny, Jonnie is sexual excess, femmininity taken to its ridiculous extreme. Her breasts are DDDD, her face overdone with makeup, her lips implanted to look full and pouty. She is perfect(ly disgusting). I loved the description, because that is the way i look at women like Pamela Lee. Does anyone actually find the woman attractive? Yes, she is perfect, but repulsive at the same time. I think when Johnnie threw the dog out of the car, the dog WAS Johnny and the act was a sort of revenge (in an eye-for-an-eye sense) on behalf of womankind for November and all the strays Johnny and Lude had thrown out of their metaphoric cars (hey it occurs to me that the scene calls to mind the "hey pretty" car scene in the beginning.. fast... slow.. fast, fast, slow... "When Kyrie dropped me off, she burped. At the time I thought it was kind of cute but I guess 'man eater' did cross my mind.") The question of why she did it, is really the question of why HE did it, and gets back to the darkness and the hand-puppet monsters. Such is the way i saw the scene, and yes it was disturbing. Once I had the hugest crush on this girl, who presented herself as an angel, and I placed her on a bigger pedestal than even she built for herself! She was a "mother to all strays" and proclaimed herself to have a "broken wing" syndrome (falling for and taking in everything with a broken wing). SHe took off to New Orleans for a week, without leaving water or food for her 5 cats. I had to drive over there (an hour drive) to feed them or they would have died. She later adopted a dog and kept it locked in the basement and rarely let it out. The entire basement where the dog had to spend its day, completely covered in the dog's shit... never cleaned. OK, she wasn't evil (debatable) and didn't slam them into pavement (she reserves that treatment for her men), but still... BTW: my little angel is going to school... to be a Vetinarian... But anywayz, back to the original point, just get back to me and I'll try to find whatever you wanna hear :) ~Eric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 14:33:58 EDT From: Dan98908@aol.com Subject: Fwd: N.E.A.P. needs a leader? He and Tony are the ones who got Amato notified about a couple events and was THE one who got Levar and Roberta set up in Toronto. I am still just the messenger boy (although Poe has been so GREAT to us, I am starting to feel like Summer Santa). I am given information about an event, I look on Erik's list to see who is coordinating that event and I make contact with that person. Anyone who requests to be on an event list, the coordinator for that event is notified to make local arrangements. As far as I know, I am kind of the liaison between the APs and Nettwerk Management and Fishkin Entertainment. Dean is the liaison with Atlantic Records. Robby is still the Eastern US coordinator. Frankly, I don't even know who the West Coast coordinator is, so I have been doing a lot of that person's work. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 14:34:43 -0400 From: "Stephen van Vuuren" Subject: poe.navelsex.com I would just like to publicly thank all the AP's who've made this site so full of good stuff. OH! Poe gave me a hug the other day!! I know it sounds silly to be exited about that, but ive always hoped to meet her, and when i heard she was coming to cleveland, i cried. when i heard about about this little group, i hoped it might get me a chance to perhaps talk to her, even if it were only for 5 minutes... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 15:30:11 EDT From: JewlyaINAP@aol.com Subject: NPR:Hello Hello Hey, I just subscribed and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself... What finally brought me in? The fact I am sorta tired of saying, "do you like poe" and people saying "yea, the raven rocks.." and other Edgar B.S.(I do respect E.A.P...don't get me wrong..but if I hear one more crack on Poe at his expense I am gonna start quoting lyrics to these people.) And I got a little annoyed at the constant missing of Poe info..Like T.V. appearances and such, and I never knew she was on tour in such a big location as MSG till a month ago. So I hope to avoid that and, as long as I dont keep sending overblown messages like this, hope to actually contribute some legit info, as well as *somewhat to extremely?* get to know some A.P.'s Either way, if you are actually reading to the end of this, I shall torture you no more;) Shari ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 15:44:35 EDT From: Dan98908@aol.com Subject: AP's on TV???? Come see Poe at Rock Hall of Fame!! OK all you people that like to have BIG guest lists to see Poe, here is your chance!! Poe has arranged for us to be admitted to her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show on July 11 at 8:00 PM in Cleveland!!! We are limited to 600 seats so I don't think you have to worry about not getting a seat. BUT I need to get a guest list together by 7/6/01. I will ask Erik to set up a list for this show too. This show will be televised by MTV and a STRONG Psycho showing ( in full AP gear) would be GREAT! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 21:24:15 +0000 (GMT) From: Cyberfan Corporation Subject: Is this BRIAN??? Yes I'm still around....I have been very quiet lately, for many non-POE related reasons.... NEAP is strong, true we don't have a list or anything, but Erik is doing a great job with this tour why create an other list to add more confusion.. If anyone wants to start one up feel free too. - -- As for Toronto it was AWESOME. for those who don't know Levar who did "Rise and Shine" with POE way back 1997/1998 was able to come up and surprise POE. They had not talked for many years and it was a very rewarding experience for all. I have known POE for a while now and I'm proud to say that she has not changed a bit, she is such a beautiful person in all ways possible. She loves us very much and wants us to be a part of her every move. However as most of you know when you do a "big" tour the headliner has all say. So as POE put it "when depche mode is in a bad mood, we are too". For those who don't get to see soundcheck or get to hang out with POE don't feel left out, POE will be doing her own tour soon and then it's her rules and everyone will get to hang out with her, that is the way she wants it (remember the borders tour!.) Dan is doing such a great job fighting for the AP's. If he can't get it done know one really can..... I'm going to sit back and help out when needed and remember when I first met jarrod and then POE and asked her to my prom...heh..
