Let's start with the Kyoto accords. That thing about most of the world being exempt. We must remember that we are very influencial on the outside world (something I think most tourists have to learn before they leave the country wearing what they where). But seriously, if we work hard to curb the threat of greenhouse gases, the rest of the world will follow. One of the biggest culprits in this issue is China and other Asian nations. They're worse polluters than we are! But how can we expect them to clean up their acts without cleaning up our own? That is, without being a hippocrite. Now, I do admire that you're looking out for "our best interests," but I don't think it's in our interest to raise global water levels by twenty feet. Just remember, Washington DC is at sea level.;) PS And about Alaska. It's not salamanders we're worried about. Nor spotted owls. It is the wild caribou, elk, and grizzly bears which need plenty of space to survive. I'd suggest you read the cover story of this month's National Geographic to understand that wild animals need more than a cage and fishheads to survive. I wonder what the major problem is with drilling for oil in Alaska is though. I don't mean what "could" happen, I want to hear what will most likely happen. Every time we build a house, mall, stadium, we offset nature. How WILL building a oil rig in the boon docks kill off all grizzly bears and caribou? If we are so concerned about it then allow the drilling but with strict regulations and inspectors. The business of drilling has improved the last 20 years and it has got to be safer now. Do we want OPEC to always have a controlling hand in our economy? Every time they decide they want more money it costs the average American more and more for gas, food, and other products. If drilling isn't good enough for the environmentalist then what other ideas do we have at our disposal? We need more power and fuel. Why stop with one? Make as many as we need. This isn't just about low gas prices, it's about national security. We can't continue to allow other countries to have a strangle hold on the very life blood of our tanks and jets. > ---Maybe if some of those politicians in DC weren't > making so much money off of oil, then maybe some of > the ideas that the environmentalists have would be > taken seriously. > The politicians did take them seriously and now look at California. No new power plants to save the environment. I guess if they have no power they can't pump gas and that will lead to clean air. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 17:16:08 -0400 From: "Kristin Hazard" Subject: Poe on the Hot Zone!! Hey everyone! I just saw the last few minutes of Poe's interview on the Hot Zone on MTV. She talked about touring with Depeche Mode and explained the video for Hey Pretty. How cool is that?? I am so proud! Anyhow, it will probably be on again, seeing how MTV repeats everything 233 times. ~K "Music is the man that made the woman out of me" ~Esthero - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 17:41:57 -0400 From: Allan Grimm Subject: Control - Original vs Haunted versions The original version of control was much darker than the one that ended up on Haunted. I actually have it. It was the version that ended up on the Apocalypse game for Playstation. It has a 1998 copyright on it, so technically the version on Haunted would be the remix. But if you listen, the version on Haunted actually has an additional verse. Another interesting note from a conversation I had with Poe back in 97 at the show she played in Richmond VA. Control was actually slated to be on the Batman and Robin soundtrack. However when they were going through the cut, appearently the song was, "too dark for Gotham." Which just explains how much that movie and the subsequent soundtrack sucked. Anyway, that's all the info I have on Control. That was = the kind of dialogue that was begun by this album. What the hell, why = not tell this story? Truthfully, I've gotten through this, and it = doesn't make any sense not to share that." Singer/songwriter Poe is speaking of her latest album, Haunted, in = which she sampled the voice of her late father, documentary filmmaker = Tad Danielewski (No Exit, The Guide) in an effort to better understand = her father and, in turn, herself. But Haunted is more than just a piece = of art; it's a look into the artist's soul - track by track, piece by = piece - and Poe agreed.=20 "You want to know something strange," she said via phone from New = York. "I think anyone who gets this record does know who I am. I don't = think it would be a fantasy or an illusion to think that a fan = understands a bit about me from this record because I think you probably = do. There's so much of me on this album. What I've been through, how I = feel, even the voice that raised me - my father. I didn't think at all = about who was going to listen to this record when I made it. I just made = it and I did have a few moments of vertigo when it was done, going, = 'What the hell have I done?'" Listening to Poe talk is like sitting in on a therapy session. In = fact, Poe joked that perhaps I could psychoanalyze her; after all, it = would be much cheaper than the normal route. It's as if Poe has come to = realize that if she can put herself out there as far as possible, maybe = she can help someone get through their own personal tragedies. "If you = have some kind of trauma in your life, let's say five and a half = minutes, it can take you a lifetime to get through it," she said with = the full realization that she herself has a long way to go before = getting to the end of her own personal tragedies. But working on Haunted = has afforded Poe a rare opportunity to look back at her relationship = with her domineering father with him as a ghostly presence, his voice = echoing through the recesses of her mind and her ears. "I just wanted to understand the sound of his voice. Why he said = what he did, why he was so cold and yet the emotion in his voice when he = said, 'I love you.' The process was one of understanding how to identify = my father's voice within my own psyche and how to distinguish my voice = from his. There was so much I internalized from him. He was so critical = that I became so self-critical that it was crippling." And to fill that void of self-doubt and love, Poe often turns to = her brother, author Mark Z. Danielewski (House of Leaves). Both brother = and sister were turned on by the same idea: What am I afraid of? Mark's = book was 10 years in the making, and Poe's album, which she calls the = unofficial soundtrack to the book, was 5 years. "My dad was so hard to = please," she said. "So my brother and I would support each other when he = ripped us to shreds." And that support carried over into adulthood where = both brother and sister support and comment on each other's work, = riffing off ideas from one another. "He (Mark) would write something and = show it to me, and then I would get jealous and write something in = response and vice versa," Poe laughed. She was the first one to see = Mark's manuscript finished, and he was the first to hear her album.=20 Now about to embark on a tour with Depeche Mode, Poe seems all = nerves and glee. Through her work and the tapes she found among her = father's belongings, Poe has completed one piece of the puzzle of her = identity. For her, Haunted was a means to know herself through the = pieces left behind, and her ability to do this publicly showcases her = openness and courage. One can only wonder what this musical chameleon = will come up with next. REAL Detroit's chameleon Suzan Alteri is up to something. Want to = know more? Email her at suz@getrealdetroit.com.
