I would actually think this to be a good thing, because then it offsets the effect of people leaving the list. I should think that the "new AP's" joining the list are going to be a much more even mix of demographics, but then again, an even mix might not be an accurate portrayal of the "typical AP" anyways. I enjoy reading NPR actually, and since it's an all-or-nothing tag, that makes it difficult to weed out the empty messages when the 1-liner surveys roll through. We end up with countless messages that are empty replies to an equally empty message, and there's no real way to sort through them. I'm not asking people to stop making polls. I'm asking them to use a free polling service instead. You'll get an organized, sorted, counted results page which everyone can look at. Also, if you notice, I'm not saying "You cannot post surveys, and if you do I'll skullfuck you." I'm asking people to "Please stop," and "please try this alternative instead." There's a distinct difference in the wording. While pop charts and adult radio stations are flooded with women, there seems to be a shortage of new female singers in rock. Doing their best to quench our thirst are Poe (POE) and No Doubt's (NODOU) Gwen Stefani. We first heard from Poe in 1995 when she debuted with Hello, featuring the hit songs "Trigger Happy Jack," "Angry Johnny," and "Hello." After nearly five years, the singer-songwriter jumped back into the pool with her sophomore effort Haunted, which was released in September 2000. A darker collection of songs, Haunted was co-produced by Poe and was released on Atlantic Records. Now the former Princeton student is watching her latest hit "Hey Pretty" swim upstream on the modern rock chart. Currently at number 17, the follow-up to the quiet first single "Walk the Walk," is nestled in a monsoon of testosterone. Sum 41's (SUM41) "Fat Lip" and 3 Doors Down's (3DOOR) "Duck and Run" sit one notch above and below "Hey Pretty." Keeping Poe company on the modern rock airwaves is Ms. Stefani, who is making waves of her own. Gwen is still the front woman for No Doubt, though she's temporarily left them out to dry while she warms up play lists on her collaboration with Moby (MOBY). The electronic DJ, who known for his own string of hits including "Natural Blues" and "Bodyrock," saw the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with "South Side," featuring Gwen's lead vocals. On this week's Billboard modern rock chart, the multi-format hit rides at number 20. It is number 15 on the top 40 chart this week. No Doubt, who returned last year with Return of Saturn, saturated rock radio formats with hits like "Ex-Girlfriend," "Bathwater," and "Simple Kind of Life." Meanwhile, Gwen is featured on rapper Eve's (EVE) latest hit "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." I suppose when an artist is looking for an adorable, charismatic female singer with crossover appeal to pool resources with, Gwen is at the top of the short list. On the Music MarketT today, Poe nearly drowned, but came up for a breath of air by rising 1/8 to H$0.61. No Doubt leaps 1 1/4 to H$15.76, while Moby treads at H$48.06. sp00k etc ...
