Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 00:00:22 -0700 Selling out is only about creating "personal" art that is really under someone else's direction; thus, not making it a personal expression at all. Example: An artist makes a painting that is a true self expression and exploration. Then some marketing guy in a blue shirt sees the painting and asks the artist if he would paint something like that for his new condo in France. "Oh, but can you paint it with more blue... Oh, and no dogs... I hate dogs. But put in some cars... especially BMW's cause I love Beemers," says the Marketing guy. "But I don't have anymore blue, I love dogs, and I ride a bike," replies the artist. "How's $5,000 sound?" asks the Marketing dude. "You'll have it by Wednesday." ---that my friend is a sell-out. Now if the above artist truly did what he loved, but just happened to have a bunch of Marketing guys in blue shirts as admirers... we'll he's certainly NO sell-out. He just has a lame following (a'la your 'Britney Spears fans' comment). You certainly must admit that 'Hauted' is clearly an extremely PERSONAL expression, so your 'sell-out' comment has no value. It's probably getting increased attention because... Oh... I don't know... BECAUSE IT'S GOOD, maybe? I know it's a huge improvement over the 'threedorrsdown-godsmack-blink182' and a thousand other '4 whiny guys in a band' dribble they play 90% of the time on KNRK. Anyway, there's absolutely no basis or foundation for even thinking the way you do in your post. I'm not attacking you.. OK, I have written confirmation from NBC that we have 25 AP group tickets for the taping on the 23rd. It will be Poe and Ben Affleck as guests. I am trying to set up a meeting with Poe before or after the taping. Here are the rules. 1. I have to have first and last names of everyone going NO LATER then Monday!!!! 2. You will need to be at Studio 3, NBC Studio in Burbank NO LATER then 3:15PM on the 23rd. They said if you get there at 3:30 you will have to go to the end of the line and there is NO GUARANTEE you will get in. 3. You will have to show photo ID. 4. You must be over 18. This is for the AP group. If you are 16-18 you CAN get in, but not as part of the group (their rules, not mine, that sucks!!!). You will have to go at 08:00 AM on the 23rd to get individual tickets first come first served. Again, I think this is a SILLY rule!!! If you are 16-18 you should be in school at 08:00AM!!!! I have started to respond to this thread a number of times and have restrained myself so far. So help me see what it IS that you want... Are you saying that when anyone, say under 16, comes into the music store we should make them fill out a survey of their musical tastes and if they have any "incorrect " groups listed along WITH Poe that we should not allow them to buy her music? You know the flaw with that is that they might end up figuring out which are the prohibited groups that keeps them from buying quality music, like Poe's. So MAYBE we should have them submit to a lie detector test to make SURE that they REALLY don't like boy bands and Brittney or Christina. And if they pass, after a 7 day waiting period we could allow them to buy a copy on a trial basis. Then we could do an in home audit of their record collection after a 30 day purge period and we could decide if we should allow them to KEEP the copy of Haunted we allowed them to buy! Yeah!!! That way we can be SURE their little minds are not corrupted by the intellect of Poe!!! By the way, I am just teasing you. You are certainly free to have your feelings, but I suggest that the 14 year olds are equally allowed theirs as well and if they like Poe AND one of your banned list groups then so be it! By the way, my sister still has a couple Bobby Sherman vinyl in VERY close proximity to her Poe, now THAT was bad music!!! I am talking about the ppl with no minds who are being the target market most obviously for this album. I Love her music! Dont take me wrong! I just dont think her work belongs next to the boybands in some trendy little 14 yr olds collection. THrow as many words back to me as you please. I have cast my vote. Think I am a bitch. I AM!!! Kinda sounds like the Adkins diet, though it probably isn't. It's been my experience that exercising is a great way to loose weight. Get up at 4:30, run 5 miles, do 50-60 sit ups, 30-50 push ups and your good to go for the most part. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Vaughn" To: Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 12:24 AM Subject: Re: NPR....do I have the right to be pissed? > > Oh... I haven't heard anything about a "focus on technology." I read in Rolling Stone that Moby wants to "diversify" music festivals, saying that they're just too full of testosterone nowadays. Although it doesn't look like Poe is going to be with them (this year, anyhow), but it would be cooling, seeing as how I'll be missing the DM show in Cleveland, but catching Area: One in TO a month later.
