Sure some people do it out of HEALTH reasons, but lets be honest here...all of us (or most of us) here are under the age of 40. How UNhealthy can we be?" i wish you were right. when i was in high school and college, i was always doing a million things at once, always running around. i had a quick metabolism, i ate whatever and whenever i wanted to. then i graduated and got a job. i still do a million things at once but i do them all from my desk, in front of the same workstation for sometimes 12 hours a day (like today, unfortunately :( ) and guess what? not only did i gain weight but when my metabolism slowed down, i gained a blood sugar imbalance that requires me to watch what and when i put anything into my mouth otherwise i break out into a cold sweat and get all shakey and miserable. and i'm not telling you this to hear any "poor you"'s: my point is i've been to a few registered dieticians, m.d.s and an endocrinologist and they all say the same thing--there are more habit-made diabetics in this country now then there are genetically-made diabetics. you eat starches and carbohydrates and don't balance them with enough protein and your body is going to make too much insulin. the more insulin you make, the more fat your body stores, the less calories you burn and so on until your pancreas is burnt out and then, viola--you're an overweight diabetic. i ate like a normal american. i like pasta and rice and potatoes. i rarely ate those things all by themselves without a helping of meat but sometimes, a starving college kid can only have ramen noodles for dinner, you know? by the time i was 23 i was sick. the weight is not that bad though i admit that i'm no longer happy with the way my body looks. more importantly, i am very unhappy with the way my body functions. that doesn't mean i'm counting calories, mind you. i'm not about losing the weight without getting my insulin in check first. i'm just saying, don't spend your happy, pre-thirty years eating spaghettios three times a day because it could very well happen to you too, and it's damn depressing to go from not noticing what you eat at all to having to keep a friggin' log for the nutritionist and poke your fingers with a needle to get a blood sugar level reading when you forget to eat something healthy every 4 hours. Oh... No... Not this bogus advice again. ;-) Here's what you do: 1. Ignore FAT... Seriously. It's not what makes you fat. 2. Cut out carbohydrates and sugar - something like no more than 12g of total carbs a day. (by the way, this is almost impossible to do...trust me) 3. Eat as many unprocessed whole foods as you can. This means no more pop, pasta, potatoes, bread, candy, rice, etc. Side note: Just so you know, Snackwell's are very bad for you (check the carbs on those puppies). And the "too much protein" argument is a failed one because almost NO one has been sent to the hospital for eating too much protein. You WILL get more than enough carbs in vegetables and fruits despite what you've been told. Simply eat as many unprocessed whole foods as you can. Also, many of the vegetarians in my wife's medical school are going back to fish and poultry for health reasons (it's a licensed Naturopathic College/NCNM) For those trying to loose a few extra pounds (and you diabetics) make sure you read Dr. Bernstein's "Diabetic Solution": http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0316093440/o/qid=990162808/sr=8-1/ref =aps_sr_b_1_1/002-0485979-6321655 Hoping I didn9t come off too preachy.
