I think the simple answer here is: POE does NOT sing to YOU alone. She is NOT YOURS to say "yes/no" "do/don't" and therefore, what she does with her career is HER business. If you don't like it, you don't have to listen. If she becomes POPULAR, then that's just great (IMO) because more people will get to hear QUALITY MUSIC like hers. Back when Hello was released, California bay area radio stations were worshipping her (even more than today) so why should it be any different? Personally I'm getting tired of all the muzak that's hitting the stations today, and want somebody like Poe to come back and mix it up a bit. Crazy PS - she's already a "popstar" so why would being popular be any different? - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sparrkle Goddess" To: Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2001 7:54 PM Subject: POE going Mainstream POPSTAR?!?! > > is it just me or is poe going popstar? Selling out is only about creating "personal" art that is really under someone else's direction; thus, not making it a personal expression at all. Example: An artist makes a painting that is a true self expression and exploration. Then some marketing guy in a blue shirt sees the painting and asks the artist if he would paint something like that for his new condo in France. "Oh, but can you paint it with more blue... Oh, and no dogs... I hate dogs. But put in some cars... especially BMW's cause I love Beemers," says the Marketing guy. "But I don't have anymore blue, I love dogs, and I ride a bike," replies the artist. "How's $5,000 sound?" asks the Marketing dude. "You'll have it by Wednesday." ---that my friend is a sell-out. Now if the above artist truly did what he loved, but just happened to have a bunch of Marketing guys in blue shirts as admirers... we'll he's certainly NO sell-out. He just has a lame following (a'la your 'Britney Spears fans' comment). You certainly must admit that 'Hauted' is clearly an extremely PERSONAL expression, so your 'sell-out' comment has no value. It's probably getting increased attention because... Oh... I don't know... BECAUSE IT'S GOOD, maybe? I know it's a huge improvement over the 'threedorrsdown-godsmack-blink182' and a thousand other '4 whiny guys in a band' dribble they play 90% of the time on KNRK. Anyway, there's absolutely no basis or foundation for even thinking the way you do in your post. I'm not attacking you.. Just pointing out the differences between art, and art's commercialism (something I'm quite familiar with). When I think popstar, I shudder, and think Christina Aguliera, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Jennifer Lopez (I like the movies she acts in though), and I shudder some more. Their songs tend to be mindless, and what makes them poppy is that you could listen to them for the first time around and know all the lyrics, that even if you hated the band/singer entirely, you would find yourself singing the lyrics some time later!!!!! Ugh!!! Anyway, popstar songs tend to be about the same subjects: sex, love, denying sex, "you left me", "I can't live without you", blah blah blah, and more sex. At least, that seems to be the common trend. Yuck. There is sooo much more to life. Poe's songs have depth, she writes them herself, they have good lyrics, and it's not all about love and sex. Some are more poppy than others, but not really "popstar" material (in my mind, and I am so glad they aren't!). And, the instrumentation and use of loops and samples is VERY well-done, and all together, this album is a very intricate album, and much more heartfelt than any popstar album. Just my 2 cents. If Haunted becomes a big success and POE keeps going with better and better albums, wouldn't say she was "selling out." (<~learned that in my business speech class) I'm doing this to take advantage of the shallowness of others. A very smart and successful (not to mention beautiful) women once told me...."Megan if you're gonna be a knock out when you get older and dont be afraid to use that to your advantage. How do you think I get paid so much??"
