Hold on there. The Animals were a crucial band. They hit the scene before the Stones and were critical to bringing blues to American teenagers. They also had a really neat habit of inviting American blues artists to play with them when they toured here. I'm not saying that African American artists were no longer ignored, but at least the Animals acted as a catalyst for exposure. Succes doesn't make a band or individual a sell out, commercialism does. I don't think you can consider releasing a radio single w/ your brother reading from his book a highly corporate maneuvar. The thing that is driving POE up the ladder is the power of her music and her supporters, not labels, commercials, or a signature line of hair care products. Though I have never considered POE's music contradictory to the mainstream flow, if anything I would say POE's music has gotten less commercially friendly since Hello. I wish more people could be happy for an artist managing to make it than dumping on them for it. Besides, albums like Haunted aren't free to produce. It takes money and contacts, power, and support. I think POE has managed to pull off one of the most estaunishing musical successes given the unique approaches she took w/ the album. I am glad POE has been given the opportunity to live off of her music, that she isn't one of the countless amazing musicians who "never sell out" and die hungry after there minititure "loyal" group of followers has long abandoned them and there music is forgotten. POE is far more in touch with her loyal fans than almost any musician I have ever met, major label or independant. It isn't that she has sold out, but that she has put so much of her soul into her music that she has in turn sold many records. She has toured Borders and spent countless hours getting to know her fans. I'm willing to make the personal sacrifice of sitting 10 feet away in front of 20 people at a smokey dive and go see POE in an arena for her sake and the sake of her music. I think her true fans owe her that much in return for what she has given us. Thanks for your time.
