Well... I live in Dallas, but couldn't go to EDGEfest - I had to work... BUT - - I did go to the Borders thing today (yesterday).. It was cool! You know - - I didn't even know you had to have a ticket thing, but they were cool about it.. so hooray! :) I have never had the opportunity to see POE live (yes, sad, I know.. but hey, I have DM tickets - Dallas - July 17!!) so this was huge for me. Suprisingly.. there were not a lot of people there, which was good for me, but I thought so many more people would be there... I mean, the EDGE has been promoting POE and House of Leaves like crazy. So, I got to meet Mark and Poe,.. and they were so incredibly sweet, I couldn't believe it. It was fantastic... Poe is great.. and Mark is so cool!! They are so kind to their fans... I've never experienced anything like that from any other musician or "celebrity"... Just wanted to share and see if anyone else went to the signing. Anyone going to the Dallas show, by the way? I called someone on calling someone ELSE on their bad punctuation (pointing out that she had bad punctuation as well of course). I agree completely. Grammar is boring. Punctuation is almost worse. And Poetic License is one of the most valuable things a writer has. I'm an editor by nature (writers beware!) so most of my writing will come out fairly flawless but god (goddess, vishnu, yahweh, etc...) knows that I appreciate a bit of creative license every now and again. I like to define genius as original thought, and original thought tends not to follow any rules, including those of grammar (when it comes to literary genius). However, a VERY small amount of writing on this planet could be considered revolutionary or genius. I think that it IS important to have a good understanding of grammar before one can have a good grasp of the English language, just as it is important to understand the concepts of logic before trying to analyze an argument... Even though the rules for both systems (grammar and logic) may not apply strictly to the "real world," they are necessary foundations. My interest as a filmmaker is in visual language and grammer. Which is a good thing since my written language and grammar sucks... The same rules apply, IMO, in the visual world. Unless you understand the rules of visual grammar, it's kind of hard to break them, especially break them in interesting ways.
