Of course, if we like it, we'll buy the cd, right? ;P My recommendations: "Sour Times," though you're already probably familiar with it. "Numb": one of their jazzier numbers, and if you're really into that, "Tribute to Monk and Canatella." "Cowboys," "Seven Months" or "Elysium" for some wicked banshee-wailing (nothing to do with Siouxie Sioux, btw). "Only You" for the slowest song ever. "Western Eyes" and "Theme From 'To Kill A Dead Man'" are incredibly dramatic and beautiful. Hell, anything you can get your mitts on, it's hard to go wrong with Portishead. Lee "Do your dreams come true?" "I haven't had a nice dream for years." _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 02:02:54 -0500 From: "gini ×" Subject: introduction Hello, I just joined this list and thought I'd go ahead and introduce myself... 1) Who you are?: My name is Gini, aka Astarle. 2) Where you're from?: Originally, California - but right now, I'm in Dallas, Texas (USA) 3) How old you are?: Will be 19. 4) Where you first heard Poe?: From a friend when I was either 13 or 14... she was singing "Angry Johnny", I asked who sings that? First of all, I have to say that I was also disappointed in the lack of manners in the club, but it did not change my enjoyment of the show. Poe and MZD have to be the most in tune siblings I have ever met. The way that they support and grow with each other is fascinating. It is rare to see two artists come together in a way that is not only brilliant but touching as well. The soft flowing voices that blend together with the same feeling, rhythm and beauty. Enough of that, I know, I know. So, I brought my recent Poe conversion with me and he enjoyed himself, in fact I don't think I've seen him have that much fun in a long time. James has a Ph.D. in American Literature and studies authors like Pynchon, Burroughs (on which he wrote his dissertation), John Fante, Bukowski and Kathy Acker. After I began reading the house I knew that MZD was one of these artists. He breaks textual boundaries and then weaves them together into an intense exercise of the human ability to understand, and think for ourselves. He is one who challenges the Control system, the way we are taught to perceive reality. James then began reading the house and found it fascinating, in fact, he is going to begin work on an article soon. The point of that ramble was that James got to have a nice chat with MZD, which only reinforced James good opinion of the novel. At the show, I was one of the Angry Psychos in front. I haven't seen a show like that in ages. It felt intimate and comforting (until the cacophony from the back almost made me homicidal). I sang along completely focused on the music and the performance. When Poe began playing Hey Pretty, she yanked several APs to the stage and I got to dance with MZD, while he sang. It was great. I have never seen artists so comfortable with fans. I know that they truly appreciate the APs and how we spread the word. Haunted is an album that stays with everyone (even if it isn't their favorite), all the people I have recommended it to have fallen head over heel for it. She is a recording artist that will be remembered long after the pop stars have faded into the background. I had fun, a blast even. I'm glad I meet some APs while I was there!! If you would like to know who I AM, then I'm just a kid from a small town who listens to good music and reads a lot, so it's no wonder I found House of Leaves & Poe. (2) Where you're from? A small town in northwest Pennsylvania you've never heard of. (3) How old you are?, Seventeen (4) Where you first heard Poe? Well, since I found out about Poe through House of Leaves, I should probably start there. About a year ago, I'd heard that this whole book was being put online, a really surreal novel. I decided to check it out. Sometime around finals weeks I bought it. Somewhere I'd heard that the author's sister had done an album like it, went by the name of POE. Ok, I thought. A few months later, I heard "Haunted" on the radio and really liked it, so I got the album as a little Christmas present last year. New Years I had a sort of HOL/POE party as a result, reading sections of the book, then partying while listening to Haunted. It was also a turning point, because it was how I met my girlfriend (and we're still together today). (5) What other musicians do you listen to? Many, actually. I'm not religious about music like some people are (that is, anything not POE), but right now I'm sort of going into another punk rock phase. Fugazi, At the Drive In, stuff like that.
