I got all that nastiness out. The truth is, if there's a part of you, of Polly [Jean Harvey], of Bjork, or of Courtney Love, which is the black widow, then you will relate to the song. If people don't feel that way, they won't resonate with it." From an interview with Tori from Singapore, January 23, 1996 "As I got to know Widow, I began to really adore her candor. She was so cut off from so many other parts of being, but here she is, deliciously convincing him [i.e., the black widow spider's doomed male mate] to kill himself so she doesn't have to leave fingerprints on his body. She'll make sure he showers before all this begins. She's ready to extract what she wants until he's dead. Whatever his addiction is, she's convincing him that Mother Mary will supply it." From "Voices in the air: spirit tripping with Tori Amos", Musician Magazine, May 1996, by Robert L. Doerschuk "Let's put it this way, Courtney [Love] and I have never spoken. We've never spoken about it and I think it's best kept that way. We have mutual friends. I don't want to put them in a bad position." From "Ready, Steady, Kook", Q magazine, May 1998, by Tom Doyle. Do you realize you're seen as good copy by journalists? "Courtney Love gives good copy." Seeing as you um, mentioned Courtney Love, there's talk that you wrote Professional Widow about her. Is that true? "There's a lot of talk about her. One of my best friends is close with her. I would never dishonor that." From "Shock and bull TORI", Herald Sun newspaper (Australia), July 9, 1998, by Cameron Adams. Just a few that all seemed to point to Courtney Love. I'm not saying that that is all that this song is about, because there are other elements of it that are obviously about Tori herself, but, I have never heard of where she outright says that the song is not about Courtney Love. Can you give me a source? Black Dove ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 19:00:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Cobb Subject: Poe on TechTV Pt 2 In case you missed it, you can catch her again next Monday at 6pm ET. The transcript is already on TechTV.com and will probably be on Polishchick before most of you get this, but I'm posting it anyways. She has a name inspired by horror writer Edgar Allan Poe and tunes that are alternately hypnotic and confrontational. Now sophisticated songbird Poe is gaining attention for her dedication to music that could best be described as a "high tech collage." AudioFile caught up with Poe at her home in New York. Here are excerpts from the interview where she confidently sings the praises of Pro Tools, Napster, and her official fan club, Angry Psychos. TechTV: How long have you been mixing your own music? Poe: Since I got my hands on a four-track, when I was about 15. I really think that the most important basics of recording can be learned on a four-track. A few years after that, TASCAM came out with an eight-track cassette recorder. And then that led to working with Pro Tools. TechTV: What are the advantages of working with Pro Tools? Poe: Independence. A program like Pro Tools is just bigger. It just has more tracks. You learn all the basics -- bussing, what an effects send is, what an EQ is, what a trim is, what happens when you plug something in, how it's going to get to tape... all on a big machine. And you can do it at home. TechTV: With the latest album, I know all of it was mixed here, but was some of it recorded here as well? Poe: No. It was recorded at a facility called Cello, which used to be Ocean Wave, an amazing studio where "Pet Sounds" was recorded by the Beach Boys. Sinatra used to record there. All of their rooms are like normal SSL rooms, $1,800 bucks, $2,200 bucks a day. But they had this one little suite of rooms that was empty, and they weren't going to do anything with it. So they gave it to me for an extremely low monthly overhead. TechTV: How is the album structured? Poe: The term "high tech collage" works, in terms of the cut and paste. At times it felt almost as though the recording of the live performances was like mixing the paints, and you painted with them later. And that's a very different kind of an approach. TechTV: How do you think these songs are going to translate into a live environment if they're so cut up? Poe: I have yet to see really how it pans out. I think performing live is going to be a very cool process of hit and miss. One of the things I've done already is taken sounds that I know are going to be difficult to recreate, and printed them on vinyl, so I can have a DJ play them. You're better off diverging from the sound of the record, from matching that completely, and inventing it for a live situation. TechTV: Let's get into your online presence. I read something interesting you're doing with Vivianlives.com? Poe: Vivianlives.com is Vivian's virtual world, it's her apartment, it's her life. It's beautifully animated, you can literally go into her living room, and go read her journal, and see the stuff she's put up on her walls, and her bedroom. The VivCam is sort of like her "Real World" camera which follows her around all the time. Vivian put my poster up in her practice room, which was awesome. TechTV: And now people can hang out with you on this site. Is that level of community something you want to foster online? Poe: Oh, yeah. And I mean, primarily through my own site too, which is P-O-E.com. TechTV: What can people find on the site? Poe: The coolest thing recently is AudioBase, which allows me to call in and leave voice messages that are just like telephone messages. And the thing that we're working on now is getting fans to leave messages as well. And then some of the Angry Psychos, which is the official fan club, can rifle through those messages. What I'd like to do is then integrate them into mixes I do here, which I upload to the site. That gives the fans a real presence on the site. TechTV: So do they manage anything within the site, the Angry Psychos? Poe: Not yet. There's a guy who created his own site called Polishchick.com. I'm Polish. Poe from Poe-land. If you didn't know. And his site is amazing. He creates content for it. I'm definitely thinking of getting him more involved in the actual site, he's very aggressive at getting information, even better than me. I do believe that through a site you can form a community, and I think that that's the most important thing for an artist like me. It's a very fickle industry. TechTV: Do you think that artists can build an online presence to the point that they don't need radio? Poe: Yeah, I believe that's highly possible. It's kind of a shame about Napster. Napster would do this featured artist thing, they have their 140 million users, put you on their homepage as the featured artist of the month, and they would do it for anyone they liked. That's powerful marketing. Courtesy of TechTV - -Adahlfin Yahoo! You're opinion is perfectly valid, ya know, sometimes things just "hit" a person a certain way, really. I've heard songs I hated the first time, but by the third or fourth or maybe the 10th or 20th I loved them. I heard songs I loved the 1st time and hated them the 3rd or 4th time. So it's all subjective, emotional and dependent upon a person's mood, circumstances psychic energy, what have you. I really wish that it was not the reality that you could have got that many negative responses, but there is a lot of negativity out there really, so, I guess to me to be so vehement about art, music, whatever, I just figure that some people do not really know what real pain or anger or suffering is... further, people reach for fulfillment where it may not be completely appropriate for such personalization. I'm just way too tired by the world and what I see out there to get that intense over something meant for enjoyment and to make people happy. You enjoy what you choose to. Ok. Maybe I shouldn't be talking because I'm not a girl but I gotta disagree with you here. You'd be surprised the kind of crap a guy will do if he's the right (or wrong as the case may be) kind of lowlife. I recently lost my chance at a fantastic relationship with a girl because of the way the guy had treated her. Now I'm her confidant instead and making sure that she never lets it happen to her again. And, interestingly enough, Control is the song she made him listen to the last time she spoke to him. "It's beyond my control." -Valmont "Who I am, yeah? Joe Panther. Joshua Panther. Actually, no. Qbala, or Kaballah is purely a Jewish creation. It was a reaction to Rabbinic Judaism that was a purely intellectual endeavor. The Kabbalists sought to to find a spirituallity that they felt the Rabbis lacked. Isaac Luria, or the Baal Shem Tov (Keeper of the good name) created the Zohar, the book of the Kaballah. It is basically Jewish mysticism. Now it has become something hip because of it's metaphysical beliefs. Madonna now "practices" Kaballah and the Wiccan's and others claim to derive a lot from it (aka Tarot). Though the teachings are mystical in nature, they are still based on the Jewish beleif. In this beleif it is blasphemy to look at tarot cards or any such "psychic" phenomenon because it is in essence idolatry. Any connection of Wicca (a pagan religion) and Kabbalah (a mystical form of ethical monotheism) is made up. Regarding the Jewish star, it has nothing at all to do with Yin/Yang or ouroboros. It was simply the war emblem that was on David's sheild. It is a celebration of victory and independence, nothing more. Did anyone see Pi? The Hasidic Jews were looking for the name of God encoded in the Torah. This is Kabbalh, a numerological form called Gemitryah. There is also an heirarchy that's supposed to bring one to GOd that is in the form of the Tree of Life. I'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but this is the truth. Read a history book or textbook. The things you find in the "The Psychic Eye" and other such New-Age stores are pretty apocryphal. These are the same places that publish "The Necronomican" full with introductory note by author Abdul Alhazred and ways to ressurect the elder God Cthulhu. Unfortunately, Cthulhu, Abdul, and the Necronomican are the creations of H.P. Lovecraft who lived in the 30's. It is pure fiction. Borrowed for the purpose of sounding "mystical." Same with Kabblah. Borrowed. No real connection. Joel > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > The Qbala is a middle eastern thing as much as a Jewish thing...the tarot > derives from it, among other things.
