Looking back as for as Nixon with his devolopment of trade as a means of peacefull interaction with a potentially hostile state we can see that we anticipated the pending conflicts (The Golden Arches theory, countries with a McDonald's do not tend to bomb each other). By developing economic ties we have been able to attempt to make policy influences with them, consider how there have been annual battles surrounding Most Favored Nation status with them always focuses on their governments unethical activities rather than the benefit it may pose for the two countries. During the Clinton era there was a lack of such behavior coming from the White House and often fell into the hands of Congress instead. Unfortunately it appears if China would much rather use scare tactics rather than diplomacy to develop its nations standing. It threatens Taiwan and Japan and any who would bestow favors upon them as they are viewed as rogue provinces of China. China used the air collision as a political tool to leverage the US out of selling ships to Taiwan that would give it a strong defence against invasion. It has threatened the disruption of political relations if the US hatches its missle defence plan for fear that it may also protect Taiwan and Japan from attacks as well. We are at the point where China is coming into its status as the next Super Power. If the disruption of diplomacy and trade continues we can look forward to this not being another political/economic rivalry but another Cold War. As for our current president, the first 100 days have passed and his approval rating is higher than anticipated. He floats in the mid 40's to 59% approval, Higher than Clinton at his first 100 from what I've read. Bush handled the China crisis well, created a budget with an enormous spending increase for education and dodged many of the early threats cast his way. The Bush decision to repeal the Arsinic legislation was a politically dangerous but necessarry decision. I personally feel that the Clinton decision to pass the legislation in the first place was to make Bush repeal a law that would and make him look bad. It was a poor piece of legislation to begin with and not important to the safety of communities. If it were such a pivitol piece of legislation it would have been passed before Clintons lame duck period. Of course Bush has made some poor choices. The removal of federal coverage for birth control for federally employed women and the development of a government/religious group system of public service were poor descisions. The womens issues center in the White House was removed without consideration of the influence it lacked and did more to harm W's political standing with women with zero gain elsewhere. I think that these first 100 days still stand as an indication that we do have a decent president and that the world will not fall apart over the next four years with Bush at the helm. Also I'm tired of hearing about how Gore won the election. First, Gore did not carry Florida, independant recounts have held this to be the case. In fact, Bush gained votes in those recounts. Claims of voter disenfranchisement are weak and would not justify the issue at hand. Perhaps the strongest argument is that Gore won the popular vote, good for him. The difference was all in the state of Califonia, an area Bush did not push to gain votes in. West cost voting is heavily influenced by Eastern results, which had in some cases called for a Gore victory before California polls closed (CNN called Florida an hour and a half before polls closed out here), which tends to leave West Coast Republicans feeling like voting would be a waste of time. The selection of the popular vote to be the sole issue ignores that Bush carried a strong majority of states. The issues surrounding the Supreme Court case are salient, the fact that the conservative members voted in the fashion they did was questionable and colored by politics. Just remember that the Liberal members did the same thing, nobodies hands were clean in this case. Even if the case were found in a different fashion we would still be looking at the same ultimate outcome though, we just wouldn't have had the same damage done to our esteemed court. This election was there for Gore to take, he was the biggest detriment to his victory. Of course the voting public is responsible as well, we probably had more people tuning into the Survivor series conclusion than voted (still waiting for the full numbers). Until a reasonable number of Americans participate in the devolopment of this country will will not know what kind of country we are capable of becoming. Just so you know I am not a Republican nor a Bush fan. It is important to keep some perspective on this issue. It won't be too much longer before another cycle comes through and we will be seeing Bush go up against a new Democrat (yet to be determined, but hopefully Bradley. Kerry was looking likely until this Vietnam issue came up, time will tell with him). /rant off Cheers kyle ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 May 2001 05:49:12 -0400 From: Ed Hunsinger Subject: RE: Poe on TechTV this week! This song comes from the soundtrack of a movie called Welcome to Woop Woop. I haven't actually seen the movie, but it's supposed to be pretty quirky. Anyway, it takes place in a fictitious town in Australian where the radio station only plays songs from Rogers and Hammerstien musicals. The soundtrack also contains Reel Big Fish doing a cover of "There Ain't Nothing Like A Dame" which I believe is from South Pacific. It's a weird soundtrack, but pretty interesting. The problem with getting so little rest is that your sleep cycle is when your body does intense healing, and after several weeks of little sleep all kinds of problems could crop up because your immune system is compromised. (usually around 7:40 for some reason). I do believe "Haunted" could go platinum. Here's hoping! Tori and Trent used to be good friends. He laid down the backing vocals for "Past the Mission" on Under the pink, and the song was recorded at his house. Then from what I've read in interviews with trent, he got involved with Courtney and Courtney made him turn against Tori and Tori and trent have yet to reconcile. This is based on interviews from trent and tori, and even courtney's made reference. Aoibhinn ~*~ERIN~*~ "Line me up in single file, with all your grievances..."
