I actually was offered $1500 for my High School yearbook... weird world. Every artist is entitled to experiment... some of her stuff I like, some I don't. Same with Poe . The word virgin actually has two meanings. The older, truer use of the word was to denote a woman who was defined by no man, as in she didn't answer to her father, husband, brother, son, whatever. Often, this woman owned property, and even if she was married, she owned her body and her property. The Virgin Mary is often believed to have been such a woman. The word in the bible refers to her as a virgin, or a young woman, and it wasn't until much later, when the Roman Catholic Church devised the idea of the "Immaculate Conception", that the word virgin came to denote someone who was untouched by sex. Obviously, Poe is using the second meaning of the word. :) However, I'll bet that she is a virgin in the older sense of the word. Yay Poe! We know the theme of this album.... but only Poe knows what these songs really mean to her. After all, they are HER songs . There is so much talk about what is a bad song.. and what is a good song .. and if the video is good or not. She has expressed her thoughts and feelings thru music and video... very personal thoughts.. and shared them with the world !!! WOW ! When I first heard " If You Were Here " that song touched me so much. I had such a connection to it , that I didn't want to share it with anyone ! Her feelings became my feelings and I wanted to keep that song all to myself . I finally played it for my 15 year old son... who came home everyday for a week and listened to it. We talked about my losses. Then we talked about our relationship and how grateful we were to be mother and son. Then I played it for everyone who would listen ! I thought.. how can I be selfish with something that isn't even mine ? I think its great that we have a place to share our thoughts on her work . But I also think it is silly to say that a song isn't good. We may not connect to certain songs .. or a video may not be the exact reflection of what we perceived a song to be . But that doesn't make a song bad or good . I am just grateful that she chose to share something that I find incredibly creative and personal. ~jez ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 21:56:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Edie Sedgewick Subject: Re: Poe Yearbook photos.....
