Picasso is full of them...check out Man Ray's famous photo, "Le Violon d'Ingres", sometime...too many examples to list. You are right about the general classes of video, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Hey Pretty HAS to fall into one of those three classes. And a video does not have to depict EXACTLY what is going on in the song in order to be relevant. You seem to have a case of the ass against the "idea" of mud-wrestling and the slimy stigma attached to it. I think the sliminess makes it a perfect analog to "the seduction of Johnny Truant" ...a meaningless, purely sexual act, lust driven with no redeeming social value. F**king for its own sake just because it is available. And she is cheating on her "man" to boot...and in his car! Isn't that tantamount to "getting it all dirty"? They should have used a BMW ragtop instead of a Caddie though...then again, maybe the Caddie is like the mud-wrestling; it is a lot sleazier than a BMW, just as mud-wrestling is a lot sleazier than just showing a guy and a girl making out in a car would be. BTW, I don't think mud-wrestling "has everything to do" with the song...maybe it isn't even all that apt; but it is still a legitimate metaphor. I am getting rather fond of the combination of emotional longing, lust, and aimless desire I get from this video, though I still "hate myself in the morning". But that might be the point. Also, BTW, a song is not a poem. A song is a song. According to E.A. Poe, the laws of literature are suspended where songs are concerned...the addition of music lends a whole new plethora of possibilities for emotional expression and can even turn what is otherwise shitty poetry into a masterpiece. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 15:26:48 -0700 From: "Bich Ngoc Cao" Subject: POE opening for DM in LA! It is a shame the way it seems to work. I used to be in local music business, I published an underground 'zine called the underground press. It was flakey for the time and covered a lot of the local underground scene, what there was of in Philly, so I've seen enough to know it really does work the way you describe. It DOES seem to me like POE, at least really has it together in those kinds of ways, but you really never do know. I kind of liked the metaphor that someone else in the ward here described pulling the scene/feel/vibe of the video from the House of Leaves segment in the book... As far as buddies, took your address down too... Maybe see you on the chat tonite. 10PM... And L7 rocks :) >> ok i'm trying to figure out how to approach this... ok first... trent probably was a dick to her. i think hes a musical genius but that says nothing for his personality. they just werent ment to be and they dont get along, thats very very well known. look at billy corgan, him and courtney didnt work out well either. but just because trent treated her bad doesnt mean thats shes an angel. then again you seem decently smart and you probably already know this. i'd also like to state that i'm not anti-courtney. i dont think its fair that people are cutting her up for being a former adict and no shes not acting like its cool to be a former addict (someone said that i dont remember who) she had a problem, and shes cleaning up. whether she has actually been following up on it or not i'm not sure. i hope so for her sake anyway. well i'm tired and its time for bed. sarah katherine ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 22:22:22 EDT From: Fzanya@aol.com Subject: Re: hey pretty, can we go somewhere else now? Media reflects Society, but more and more it seems that Art imitates Life imitates Art, breeding this vicious cycle of hate, fear, and mistrust of a fellow man. So you don't like what you are seeing on the TV? Look out your window and tell me if you like what you see there, then do something about it. Think about the 13-year-old who when told to think about what happened in Colorado responded that being told that made him want to carry out his plans even more. This is insane! The main problem is... THE YOUTH ARE RESTLESS. They have no battles to fight and no war to protest. In our attempts to keep the children safe, we are causing them to grow up way too fast, too try to understand the pain this world causes too quickly. Innocence is dead. (The Pisser) Yahoo!
