What kind of music is it? What are >artists are they similar to? Are they as deep and confessional writers as Tori >and Poe? Uh, I guess so. Catatonia is a 5-piece Britpop band from Wales -- and that's not exactly accurate -- they'd probably kick my ass for calling them Britpop -- but they are in that vein. Lead singer Cerys was on the cover of a few trashy guy magazines a few months ago when their latest cd was released here in the states with bonus tracks of hits from previous albums. She's cute as a button, but has this crazy gravelly voice that will probably not gain any fans in the "Nelly Furtado's voice is annoying!" camp (haha, j/k). Anyway, they didn't catch on here, for a number of reasons that I could enumerate at length, starting with the fact that they were promoted very strangely, and that I never saw them on MTV or heard them on the radio. (Strangely enough, they did the HORDE tour a few years back -- that must have been very odd indeed -- they're not very HORDE-y.) Anyway, I'd liken to uh, a louder Belle and Sebastian, or Blur with a chick, or if Blondie were a pissy Welsh band, or something like that. good sites: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~durandal/catatonia/ http://listen.to/catatoniamedia/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 20:48:30 EDT From: JezebeIlnHeII@aol.com Subject: Re: Free ice cream and books for tots > In a message dated 5/2/2001 6:30:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > JezebeIlnHeII@aol.com writes: > > > > Hmmm, 37 today... someone pass me the cane... Like modeling, and acting perhaps. In my industry, as a computer programmer, looks don't amount to a hill of beans. OMG, how could I work in an industry where people are exploited for a body part? For their minds? What about those who are born with less ability to think around corners and problem solve? It's just not fair to them. Please, don't condemn the entire nation for what you see in the media and what goes on in LA. If it really bothers you, move to eastern North Carolina. Growing up there, I know that the lifestyle is definitely not "looks based". Heck, if you have all of your teeth, you're doing well (joke, please don't flame me!) Another thought of mine that would be a totally cool and awesome thing, would be if Tori and Trent did a double CD together: One side would be Tori doing NIN covers, and the other side would be Trent (not necessarily NIN) doing Tori Amos covers. :) Probably will never happen, but one can dream, can't one? :) Seriously, I could see Tori doing Hurt (she did a verse of it for a concert), Gave Up, Closer, Santicified...etc... And Trent could do some real cool stuff with her songs, and in Caught a Lite Sneeze, he gets to say "made my own pretty hate machine"... :) And I can see him doing Professional Widow, and Precious Things ("those demi-gods, and their NINE INCH NAILS and little fascist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice girl..."), and all sorts of songs...I haven't made a list of what I'd like to see on the album, but i probably will someday when I have nothing better to do than make up a listing for tracks on an album that will never happen. :) signed Black Dove, who wishes she could personally correspond with Tori Amos to share all these wonderful ideas with her :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 20:53:13 -0500 From: "Patrick Langley" Subject: Re: Free ice cream and books for tots must be gettin old timer's disease. when you get older three things happen to you first, your mind starts to go. second, your....ummmmm....i can't remember what #2 & #3 are. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2001 7:48 PM Subject: Re: Free ice cream and books for tots > > > In a message dated 5/2/2001 6:30:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > > JezebeIlnHeII@aol.com writes: > > > > > > > Hmmm, 37 today... someone pass me the cane... > > > I really must be losing my mind.. You may think Venus sucked, but that's your opinion. Some people didn't like it simply because it was too different from her other material. Some people loved how she was using so many different elements, and combining them to make some very unique sounding songs. You can only do so much with a piano and a band, and Tori was always one to experiment. Rob ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 22:32:19 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: Re: To Rob again You started the Tori bashing off of my comment on her songs that may be related to Courtney. If you had read any of my earlier posts, you would have seen that I said nothing really bad about Courtney, I explained my reasons for why I don't think I would like her, but I do like her music. I stated my opinion gently, and then reinforced it as to why. You came right out and bashed Tori, with no justification, just "Venus absolutely sucked". You lowered yourself down to the level of other people on the list that bashed Courtney. Doesn't make you any better, it in fact makes you worst. And if you really want to get into musical talent wars, I don't think Courtney can compare to a child prodigy who played Mozart at the age of 3. So, if you want to bash Tori just because people were bashing Courtney, don't do it off of the comment of someone who did not bash Courtney. In fact, I think I was the only one who came right out to talk about Tori in relation to Courtney. So, pick a fight about something else with someone else who actually bashed Courtney (since that seems to be who you're subtlely defending here). Anyway, I think people just fail to realize that Courtney Love doesn't seem to care if you think she's a bitch, and if you do then she'll either find it hilarious or not give a flying fuck, and the only reason I'm not being vicious about one of my favourite celebrities is because I knew if her name was to EVER pop up on this list a lot of people would start hating on her, and that's their opinion.
