Don't you think the fun was worth it?" this is actually something i've been thinking about the last couples days and i think the reason the video is such a personal disappointment for me is this: poe is a female artist, very strong, independent (not as in record label, as in she's not all "you like me? you really really like me?"), intelligent, and talented. these are important things about her. try to not take this as me saying it's not right for her to be sexy as well. she's extremely sexy and ain't nobody can slow that down. that's not even my point. the thing is though, people who are first being introduced to her by this song--say, girls looking for an intelligent artist-role model--they're gonna see this video and want to run out and buy the albums??? if this was the first thing i knew about her i wouldn't have bothered and that's just honesty. i wouldn't have a clue why this guy keeps talking about driving and unzipping while one of the mud wrestlers was singing back up for him. it's all just muddled and i think it would mislead people who didn't know her from eve. or lilith or whoever. on the other hand, based on the reactions i'm gauging here, i'd say it would help her male fan base to grow considerably (no pun intended. ok, yes it was). peace out - -jen Yahoo! Hey there Anyone want to go to a Living Room Concert in Boston this thursday, May 3rd at 7pm? The band is WENT (www.wentsongs.com), who are out of New York. They've played with Jeff Buckley, Homer Erotic, Holly Palmer and the likes. The regularly play the NYC circuit (Arlenes, Bowery, Bitter End, Living Room, Fez...). They are going to be showcased on the Jenny Jones show hopefully soon, and their sound is a mix of etheral vocals over lush guitar. It is a mix of strong riffs and hooks with stay-in-your-mind vocalsIs. It is rock and can hold its own against any garbage or hole song. WENTs music can best be described as a rocky/groove/folk mix. Sarah Wendt's ethereal vocals grasp you and sooth you, while taking you on a musicl journey. The lush guitar is backed by some pretty tight drum beats, and the production is amazing. WENTs sound is very unique and refreshing. Soft and soothing, yet hooking and hip. For a month in a row, WENT's CD "Parachute" made the top 200 most played CDs on the RADIO AIRPLAY 200, which was rated above Nine Inch Nails, Jewel, A Perfect Circle, Moby, At The Drive-In, Badly Drawn Boy, David Gray, Lenny Kravitz, Wu-Tang Clan... If you enjoy the vocalings of Beth Orton, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Emm Gryner, Sarah Slean, Tara MacLean, Poe, Sinead O'Connor, Sarah McLachlan, with a bit more rock and groove, you'll love WENT. Email: JewelEDA21@aol.com for more info and guest list. The show is free, but we ask everyone to donate $5-$10 for the artist. Its just like any other LRC! But I can see why tori doesnt like courtney hey if i was her i'd dislike her too..... I guess the whole Kurt thing I have this werid (kinda) liking of courntey, she mothered his child.. Ok, i'm a nut.. lol i'm done rambeling.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 17:00:50 -0300 From: "Tori Amos" Subject: Pretty video doubt Ok someone here plz CLEAR my mind lol I'm in a fucking country named Brazil and no this vid is not here yet and probably it will never be cause people here don't have a simple little stupid idea of who Poe is.... so what's the matter about the vid damnit?? I am staring at it right now (the hard copy), and Parachute is def. above sigur ros, lenny kravitz, at the drivein, nine inch nails, wutang, orgy, semisonic, mouse on mars. check www.cmj.com check it before you write it, man. At any rate, they debuted at #139 which is pretty damn good for a band who released an album with their own money, no funding from anyeone else. It's all good press! peace, Seb :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 14:49:25 -0700 From: "Robert A Darke" Subject: Re: NPR C Love - I like Hole Ok, how about just reinforcing that she hasn't made anything good since Choirgirl... 8-) Jesus, lighten up. People have different opinions. So if I'm "tori bashing" who cares? There's also apparently a few Courtney fans here besides myself, but you don't hear (the majority of us) bitching about bashing her. Hell, I've seen a lot of mention of bands, people, that I think just plain suck. But, if there's nothing nice to say, I personally try to keep my mouth shut. As someone so eloquently pointed out earlier, NO ONE HERE KNOWS THESE PEOPLE. So, damn. Deal. And if you are a writer, you write what you know. Tori happens to not like Courtney, not just in a professional sense but in a personal sense as well. She writes about Trent, too. She knows and has had experiences with both of them, and if she wants to write songs about them it;s her perrogitive. Do you think that just because Dave Grohl is famous, Loise Post shouldn't write love-gone-wrong songs about him? These people know each other and it's pointless for you to say that they shouldn't write about each other. Aoibhinn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 17:32:34 EDT From: Violet7360@aol.com Subject: Courtney/Poe/Tori/ Hole I understand this whole conversation started from something that was said about poe but it has gone way beyind this into a conversation about who hates Courtney and hole and what other musicains like or dislike Courtney. Everyone has their own opinions so it is almost impossible for someone they say they don't like courtney with someone else jumping on their ass and yelling at them for their bad taste and vise versa. So my suggestion is to drop the whole thing since it has become no longer related to POE. And she is the reason we all come together not who likes or dislike Courtney Love. We are the Angry Pyschos not HOle HEads or whatever. Dammit! I don't care what anyone else says, this video works...and works quite well. It does exactly what it intends...sleeze and guts and lust and all manner of submerged feeling swelling up out of the loins of it...and there is longing in it too, the kind that would induce a grrrl to drag an indulgent Johnny Truant to a late night tryst on Mulholland (Mudholland) Drive. Some people seem to think Poe should be all into intellectualized feelings and take some kind of anti-somethingorother stance (well, she does do a lot of that, though not in this song), but she is a goddess and has every right to use her charms in this way. Compare the smokey allure of this video to the polished, superficial, styrofoam sexuality of the typical pop-diva type...Poe rules! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 17:42:47 EDT From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR C Love - I like Hole In a message dated 5/2/2001 5:35:08 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Robert.A.Darke@aexp.com writes: > As someone so eloquently pointed out earlier, NO ONE HERE KNOWS THESE PEOPLE. > So, damn. I am so angry I can barely stand it. I feel like standing on top of the Hollywood sign and bitching at this fucking town for everything I hate about it. Now, perhaps I am this angry because I am not particularly attractive, but I suppose I will let you all be the judge of that... I just read an article in the Living section of the LA Times. This article was entitled, "Ah, To Be Young and Beautiful." Here's the article in a nutshell: in order to be succesful and accepted in society one must get make-overs, have waxed legs, strive to be model-beautiful, etc, etc. Unfortunately, I believe it is true to a certain extent...HOWEVER, the thing that pissed me off the MOST about the article, is that it CONDONED this. It said it was completely normal and perfectly OKAY to be superficial because "it's a reality" now. Not only that, it IGNORED the fact that people striving to be beautiful is the exact reason why anorexia and bullemia are absolutely RAGING in this country. We're becoming a bunch of hypocrites: we claim we're haters of communism yet we try so hard to make everyone exactly the same. Those who refuse to follow the norm are ostracized. It's the biggest bunch of bullshit. A big pile of Jurrasic Park-sized Doo Doo. I don't understand how ANYONE can think that it's okay to try to mangle and change their face and bodies. How can anyone look in the mirror and be okay with being someone completely artificial? Don't they ever say, "Wow, that's pretty...but it's not ME"? I would have an identity crisis. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I AM living in a dreamworld. It's just that :::get ready for the cliche of a lifetime:::...what the fuck ever happened to compassion? We're gonna start sticking disabled people in the nuthouse again, next thing you know, because they could NEVER be exactly like everyone else. I hope the world would never get that extreme, but what's going on right NOW is too extreme for me. This country fucking sucks! It sucks it sucks it sucks! AHHHHHHHHH. I'm going insane! I'm being so cynical but I can't help it, I feel like it's going to be the downfall of our country. I'm over-reacting, I know I know. :::in attempt to calm self down sticks "Angry Johnny" into the CD Player and pretends to sing the lyrics to the author of the article::: Okay, I am better now.
