The Cranberies didn't like one of the videos from their second album and they went back and changed it against the directors wishes (he even asked to have his name removed from directing credits because he didn't like the changes) I think POE is probably just as stubborn about having things come out the way she wants as Delores O'Roirdon is. Ok, so they're playing it pretty regularly now on 101.1 the River here in St Louis, and now i'm starting to get...jealous? Maybe that's not the right word but it' slike I get pissed cuz they're like "HEY that's brand new music from POE, that's P - o - E and umm she's pretty new and everyone seems to be loving that song, it's called Hey PRetty"....ANd I'm sitting there thinking Ok first off Poe is NOT new, and second Why the hell shoudl other people be allowed to enjoy her. LoL I know i know it's selfish...but it's that whole hey I've been w/ Poe for so many years now that I feel like others who didn't appreciate her back in the day are worthy? Who knows. :-) One thing that this has accomplished is reaffirming myself as an angry psycho, i think i had lost faith, well....I'm baaack. :-) mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 03:30:22 EDT From: PiGmAilZX@aol.com Subject: AP: The Smashing Pumpkins, statement vs. fact A small note to both Geoff and all the Poe fans reading this... It's not to flame. It's not to offend. It's simply for the fact that someone made quite a few statements which I protest and disagree with -- and then passed them off as SP gospel. For those of you who don't know and are interested in the Pumpkins, read on. << Being that I wrote the email about Melissa joining the pumpkins...I'd like to clear a few things up. I am one of the worlds largest pumpkins fans, owning nearly 60 smashing pumpkins lp's, ep's, cd's, and imports. I have been to multiple shows and consider them a huge inspiration. >> I too consider them a huge inspiration, but am not in any way trying to use my CD collection as a boasting right of fandom. It's so strange how often Pumpkins fans get into the debate of who's a bigger fan, etc., etc. -- but I dunno Geoff, I just thought rather than coming down on Poe fans so hard about things they really don't have to know (like yourself), I should "come down" on the people clearing things up with "misinterpretations" of the facts. << they had the balls to fire Jimmy in '97 after his repeated heroin ordeals. >> Jimmy was actually fired July 17th, _1996_. Furthermore, just to clear any other questions up, the heroin incident occurred around midnight on July 11th between Jimmy and touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin. Jonathan was pronounced dead the morning of July 12th. << When they brought him back out of rehab >> The band did not bring "Jimmy back out of rehab." Jimmy was in rehab for a short period of time following the incident (as the band hired touring drummer Matt Walker from Filter/Cupcakes/Impossible Recording Machine and continued on). Clean, Jimmy spent the following two and a half years exploring other interests (stock car racing, travel, etc). The decision to bring him back into the band, was a mutual one between Billy and himself made around November of 1998 in Los Angeles. << Billy and James were the makers, playing their first show at the Metro in Chicago. >> Actually, the band's first gig under the name "The Smashing Pumpkins" was July 9th, 1988 at the club Chicago 21. Little is known about this show, but or many to follow. The first show at the Metro (then the Cabaret Metro) was October 5th, 1988. This and other such info can be found at http://www.spfc.org/band/chronology.html?year=1988 << Afterwards confronted by D'arcy proclaiming that his band was full of shit, Billy decided to ask her to join, only because he liked her venomous attitude. >> The actual show which D'arcy met Billy after is much disputed but was not a Smashing Pumpkins show. There is small mention of it on the band's video, "Viewphoria," and also in many articles from the Gish-Pisces Iscariot era. D'arcy and Billy attended the same show and had an argument on the street afterwards about the lead singers onstage antic and how "unrealistic and planned" they were...she then stated something similar to "when I play bass..." and Billy offered her an audition. << Of course, she was no better than she is now. >> Every time D'arcy's meeting has been brought up with Billy he's stated that at her audition she did nothing more than blush and create a lot of obnoxious bass amp feedback. I'd say she came quite a far way, myself. She's no Bela Fleck, but... << He tought James and D'arcy most of what they know. >> What D'arcy does and doesn't know is a matter of opinion, but if you can show me where any member of the band has ever claimed Billy taught her, I'd love to see it. As for James, Billy had little to do with James, or his style. James is mostly known as an additional tweaker -- he's a huge fan of the ebow, and often merely adds to what Billy lays down. The reason this is, is Billy knows very little of how to use the "gadgets" which James uses. << Not to mention that he played most of the Bass and rhythm guitar parts on their first three albums due to the then dating duo's extended absences and i-could-give-a-shit attitudes towards their career. >> I'm sure The Pumpkins and Butch Vig would have this one out with you in a second. "Gish" was recorded in a span of nearly 9 months (April-December) and encompassed the entire band. In later interviews the band actually mentioned the biggest problem being Jimmy not being around for final drum mixes. << So next time you decide to take up an argument on the pumpkins with me...just be prepared to step the fuck off once again! >> As I said before Geoff, I probably wouldn't even do this if not for the stand-offish nature of your post. If people are going to talk about the Pumpkins, fine. If they're going to state inaccuracies, fine (I can't police them all)...but if they're going to do both and then ask as though they should be worshiped, fuck that. Hopefully you'll be able to do some reading at www.spfc.org before you spout off again. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 01:42:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Lanna Chidester Subject: Re: NPR Hello, Hello yay another oklahoman!! hi michael! the spi still exists, but it is crap for the most part. sunday nights though they air dr. demento followed by two hours of old spi, with good stuff!!! they played not a virgin on there, which is how i realized poe had a new album out. it is late, and i am tired. that is all i have for now. lanna Michael Anderson wrote: Well, since I am new here (sort of) I guess I should start with the expected questions. "the longest unzipping of my life" hello?!? are you out there? that's sexy and there's no mud required. that's all i'm saying. i would be curious to know what poe thinks about the video and the debate we've been having over it. i don't neccessarily think that it matters to her as much as to the record company. not that it would make me like the video but i wouldn't mind being wrong about the video's concept or lack thereof. - -jen Yahoo! I was thinking, and I KNOW that many of you will disagree with me, but some peopel were putting their dream.. whatever up here... I came up with only one... Everlast & Poe See I love the mistress of Groove as much as the next person on this list. However I am a fanatical Everlast enthusiast. I have lyrics tatoo'd on my body, and have damn near crawled out of (or rather into) my own grave to see the man perform here in phoenix. (which he graciously does much more often than most artists who don't live here.) So if I had to make the perfect tour for me, it wouldn't be Tori amos, or any other girl singer or what not... Frankly I'm more interested in Content, and think that Much like Poe, everlast has something to say, in some cases more so than poe. I think that everlast fans are pretty fanatical (which i discovered by joining the everlast list.) and Poe fans are as well. The only difference I see is that most Poe fans seem to be geared more towards female (meaning girl singers) music. (I say the girl thing because I don't like the term Chick bands ect. and for lack of a better word) Where as everlast fans seem to go really in all directions. So I think that fan wise, it would be a really good tour because they're music and live show would really work well together, and I think that both of them have something to say that can be understood by each others fans. But with the exception of Radio play, they're fans have not had a chance to hear a lot of the other music. Like I really doubt a whole lot of Poe Fans have heard Babylon Feeling, and I doubt ANY Everlast fans have heard Fly Away. So I think that touring together would kick ass. I know that a couple months back a couple people got a wild hair up their ass on this list and tore the idea up before I even mentioned it. Well that's your opinion and that's cool.. I sit here and watch your opinions form on this screen more than enough each day. Wether is actually be about Poe, (whom we love and admire) or while you bicker. We all have a right to say what we think.. even if you disagree with me... So long as you don't insult me I accept your opinion as yours, and mine as just my opinion. So maybe someone agrees with me that that would be a pretty cool lineup. maybe not... Just thought I'd drop my 2cents. BTW: I have yet to see the Hey pretty Video on MTV or MTV2.... that sucks much ass... the only good thing that seems to be playing anymore.. and I miss it. - -Kyron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 12:11:37 -0500 From: "Brandon Wilson" Subject: Re: Re: I luv Courtney..hmm i DONT. It gets a lot of radio play here (which also led to the radio playing Angry Johnny, Trigger Happy Jack, and Hello), but how can people actually *listen* to the song, if it isn't even the "real" song, but a mix thereof? If the song gets them to buy the album, yes, that's great, but I personally don't really think the mix reflects both of the albums very well. But then again, that's just my opinon. From: "Stuart Kirschenbaum" To: Subject: Re: Hey Pretty Video Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 22:32:23 -0400 OK, I was one of the first to speak up about the video and the use of the Drive By Mix here on the list. But look, it's about publicity, and getting Poe out on the road to sing these songs. And it's about doing whatever it takes to get there. Hey Pretty is a sexy song, there's no doubt about that, and I have no problem with the video reflecting that sexuality. I for one wouldn't mind taking a ride with her, through her world. (through the wicked winding streets of her world.. God I love that lyric). We'd all love for Poe to be headlining, and that's going to happen I'm sure, cause I believe an album this great cannot be buried for long. I believe that once people start hearing the songs from Haunted, that they will be hooked as we were. But the catch-22 is that they can't know they'll love these songs unless they *hear* these songs. And if the Drive by Mix and the video help convince people to give this album a chance, then they've done the job their designed to do. Do they represent the album as well as I'd like? No. Have they helped garner publicity and new listeners? Yes. Has that helped get her on the tour with Depeche Mode? Almost certainly. So let's lighten up people. We all love Poe's music and we all want to help her take over the world. Haunted is a great work of art; the best album I've heard in years. Let's trust the talent behind that to judge what's best for it. Looking forward to seeing her at the Garden June 27th. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 16:12:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Jason M Crawford Subject: Hey Pretty Video - Not a virgin anymore Call her a slut call her a jaded pill... I was thinking about the video in relation to the LP version of the song and how it follows "Not a Virgin". By any chance, do you see a connection? I'd rather not tear anyone down over their impressions of the song. To each his or her own. I have only seen the video on the Internet. Down by the lake? I enjoyed the video. Additional airplay isn't a bad thing. For some folks, this video will be their first exposure to Poe. Groovy. When they see additional videos, hear other songs on the radio, purchase the album, see POE live, see POE headlining a tour... Don't you think the fun was worth it? Courtney Love is a great actress, give her a break. So you may not like her music, but don't be so biased, give the woman a chance! It's not just an "acting bug" either, she wanted to do that before she wanted to be a rock star, after seeing Tatum O'Neil win an oscar. And she sure as hell isn't a sell-out, tastes change and people change, I'm sure you have gone through many phases to, it's just that yours weren't displayed to the world. ~*Sugar Coma*~ ~*I don't believe you're leaving-cuz me and Charles Manson like the same Ice Cream*~ Tori Amos ~*They want to burn the witch whose inside us*~ HOLE ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 15:32:36 -0500 From: Michaela Drapes Subject: weekend digest reply consolidation "The Invisible Circus": yes, trailer makes it look utterly lame, I agree. I used to be the way you were with Garbage, the band I'm obsessed with and believe me when I freaked out over an opinion mistaking it for a fact it only made me come off as an ass. I would know that because I have been told about what an asshole I looked like when freaking out over nothing. As for people bitching about Courtney Love's addiction to heroin and getting rid of it, that is pretty damn respectable and she obviously had a lot more guts than her husband did cuz it killed him. And I don't care how many times I get flamed for this or "how wrong" I am, but Hole's music at least wasn't as repetitive as Nirvana's. I was a Nirvana, Hole, AND SP fan ever since I was in freaking elementary school, and Hole was my favourite out of the three and I don't care how many people tell me that Hole was a rip-off of Nirvana, SUCK IT! And as for those stating that Courtney killed Kurt, is a bad actress... etc... you would have to be blind to not realize about how suicidal Kurt was in the first place. In my opinion, he killed himself to be up there with Jimi, Janis, and Jim Morrison, he said in his letter that he just couldn't get a feel for music anymore. So what if Courtney Love is a bitch? Do you really think she cares about what you think about her? Trent Reznor was a dick to her and she got the rep for being the jerk. Anyway, I respect people who aren't crazy for Courtney but still like Hole's music, that's cool.
