It's been cool that people are starting to speak up about the video. When I complained about the day polishchick.com posted it, I thought I was alone and somehow missed the point.
We're supposed to be Angry Psychos - I for one want much better videos and a solo tour!!!! None of this T&A remix stuff and opening act in some parts of the east stuff.
Is it just that Atlantic is bastard company, or is her management not tough and determined enough, or is Poe settling for what she can get?
I know it's hard as hell being an independent artist and thriving in the music world but it can be done. If there is something more we can do to help (Poe - are you there) tell us!

no, i tend to think it was
just an excuse to, as mike so aptly put it, give those
who are grateful for female models mud wrestling "on
music videos" (wouldn't that make the tapes too sticky
to play in video decks?) a chance to drool.
Geez man what's wrong with showing a little sexuality? Just because it's
a *sexy* video doesn't mean it's trashy. Society tells women that they should
cover up or else they're sluts, and even though I don't think that's what the
video was trying to stress pOe can dress however she pleases, I'm sure she
didn't just do it to attract attention. So what if the video was sexy? Who
cares?

before poe or her record label hears that *everyone*, incl. the ap's, hated
the video, let me stick a pro vote in there. i was diggin' the video, no
matter how silly, degrading, or nonsensical some find it to be. (i
certainly respect the hey pretty haters opinion, but i don't share it.)
maybe it does have some specific meaning to poe & mark, but even if it
doesn't, is that necessarily wrong? look at all the videos that mtv plays
nonstop all the freakin' time - do any of them make a lot of sense? how
exactly does britney's red catsuit factor into the song? how 'bout dogs
chasing those n*sync boys? or miss gagulara in ANY of her videos(flames
welcome on this one!)? and the thongs all over sisqo's...uh, nevermind on
that one...
anyway - bottom line, i thought the video was just good fun and a little
sumpin' sumpin' to feast your eyes upon.

Being that I wrote the email about Melissa joining the pumpkins...I'd like to
clear a few things up. I am one of the worlds largest pumpkins fans, owning
nearly 60 smashing pumpkins lp's, ep's, cd's, and imports. I have been to
multiple shows and consider them a huge inspiration. D'arcy is actually the
reason i started playing bass (not to mention a black fender p-bass). I was
so enamoured by the fact that they had the balls to fire Jimmy in '97 after
his repeated heroin ordeals. When they brought him back out of rehab, i
wasn't too sure. BUT, when D'arcy leaves the band and then gets busted for
coke possesion not even a week later...what can i say. she lost all respect
from me. Also, Billy was the one who got Melissa a job with Hole. When he
asked her to play with them, joining her ex-boyfriend and the idyllic band of
her childhood, she jumped at the choice. She couldn't help but reveal the
fact that when in Hole, they were always drunk and knew maybe at the most 13
songs at a time. With the pumpkins, it was granola and red bull and 97 songs.
And to comment on the statement about D'Arcy making the band...try getting
your facts straight. Billy and James were the makers, playing their first
show at the Metro in Chicago. Afterwards confronted by D'arcy proclaiming
that his band was full of shit, Billy decided to ask her to join, only because
he liked her venomous attitude. Of course, she was no better than she is now.
He tought James and D'arcy most of what they know. Not to mention that he
played most of the Bass and rhythm guitar parts on their first three albums
due to the then dating duo's extended absences and i-could-give-a-shit
attitudes towards their career.
So next time you decide to take up an argument on the pumpkins with me...just
be prepared to step the fuck off once again!

hole. and melissa could kick courtney's ass any day. courtney would be
nothing without the help of her band, who unfortuntlay doses not get the
recognition that they deserve. it saddens me knowing that the poorest
musician in the history of the band gets the publicity while the others are
cast in the shadows of her bleached blonde giant head [blame it on the ego].
why does she not want to work with poe? she's intimidated by someone who

OK, I was one of the first to speak up about the video and the use of the
Drive By Mix here on the list. But look, it's about publicity, and getting
Poe out on the road to sing these songs. And it's about doing whatever it
takes to get there. Hey Pretty is a sexy song, there's no doubt about that,
and I have no problem with the video reflecting that sexuality. I for one
wouldn't mind taking a ride with her, through her world. (through the
wicked winding streets of her world.. God I love that lyric).
We'd all love for Poe to be headlining, and that's going to happen I'm sure,
cause I believe an album this great cannot be buried for long. I believe
that once people start hearing the songs from Haunted, that they will be
hooked as we were. But the catch-22 is that they can't know they'll love
these songs unless they *hear* these songs. And if the Drive by Mix and the
video help convince people to give this album a chance, then they've done
the job their designed to do. Do they represent the album as well as I'd
like? No. Have they helped garner publicity and new listeners? Yes. Has
that helped get her on the tour with Depeche Mode? Almost certainly.
So let's lighten up people. We all love Poe's music and we all want to help
her take over the world. Haunted is a great work of art; the best album
I've heard in years. Let's trust the talent behind that to judge what's
best for it.
Looking forward to seeing her at the Garden June 27th.

I like most of Hole's music. I think it is good for those times that you just
need some raw, unrefined music. As for Courtney Love herself, I'm not sure
that I like her. I know she did something to piss Tori Amos off (the number
one musician in my life, and my number one obsession), and was apart of and
quite possibly the cause of the falling out in the relationship between Trent
Reznor and Tori Amos (which pisses me off because I think these two would
have awesome kids...but she's married and has a kid with Mark Hawley now...),
and in interviews I don't think she is the nicest person, but I do like the
music.

Poe, if you're reading this, think you can e-mail the list or e-mail someone

much say? Did you resist at all? Or were you all for it? Does it work for

I'm really curious, because several people on the list seem to be trying to

I agree that there are plenty of those videos out there..and there are worse
ones, but that isn't an excuse. It should be a reason to make things
better...one should try to lead and inspire change, not just "go with the
flow"
Those that are saying that the video may have a meaning to Mark or Poe have
to realize how music videos are made. It's all the director's choice on what
goes into the video...The artist RARELY have any say in what goes on in the
video.
Unless the artist is DIY (Do It Yourself) the record company takes it upon
itself all the creative decisions in the marketing of an album, a music
video is basically nothing but a commercial.
I'd be very surprised if they got any say in the final product...This is at
least how it usually works in the industry...Their are some exceptions, but
usually the artist records and is then a slave to the record company...
I would like to hear it from Poe's mouth herself what she thinks about it
(away from the censoring eyes and ears of Atlantic Records) If she likes it,
and had a say in it, I'll bite my tounge and eat my words.
For now I say: "POE, the sooner you can get away from the one thing that is
holding you back and destroying your image (Atlantic) the sooner you can
explode and become famous on your own grounds. Don't degrade your body and
follow the 'trends' in music, (i.e. T&A) go back to selling yourself through
your music. Turn people on through your voice."
P.S. If you can't tell by now, I hate conglomerate record companies. They
are the killers of creative expression. They only care about the all mighty
$...Think about it, how much backing did they put behind Poe until they saw
that they could make a lot of money off the new album? (hardly nothing) Mark
my words, if her next album doesn't sell as much (I hope this doesn't
happen) Atlantic will try to drop her like a ton of bricks.
Anyone else wants to discuss, feel free to AOL IM me: Notajunkie
Always with love for Poe and all the APs.

before poe or her record label hears that *everyone*, incl. the ap's, hated
the video, let me stick a pro vote in there. i was diggin' the video, no
matter how silly, degrading, or nonsensical some find it to be. (i
certainly respect the hey pretty haters opinion, but i don't share it.)
maybe it does have some specific meaning to poe & mark, but even if it
doesn't, is that necessarily wrong? look at all the videos that mtv plays
nonstop all the freakin' time - do any of them make a lot of sense? how
exactly does britney's red catsuit factor into the song? how 'bout dogs
chasing those n*sync boys? or miss gagulara in ANY of her videos(flames
welcome on this one!)? and the thongs all over sisqo's...uh, nevermind on
that one...
anyway - bottom line, i thought the video was just good fun and a little
sumpin' sumpin' to feast your eyes upon.

Okay - valid point and good post. I was the original complainer (on this
list) but I'm willing to see this side of it. Kate Bush was also marketed as
a sex symbol by EMI early in career. It persuaded me (I was a teen at the
time) to buy my first Kate album. I've been a devoted lifetime fan every
since.
But the key is the Kate used her success to get complete control over her
work and image. So have other artists. It's not easy and you can't always do
it perfectly, but we hope Poe achieve that kind of independence. It's only
her second album and I look forward to many more.

Yeah, Sister was mostly her project, but she had a lot of other people working on it with her. This new thing is pretty much all her, and it;s different from the Sister Soleil sound (So i heard) and she wanted to give it a different name....
She looks the same to me. She;s trying to get away fromt he quirky/cutesy look (with the braisds and pigtails) from the sister days i think....

ok. the hey pretty video was like. i don't know. i didn't really care for it
but i didn't hate it either. i don't really get to watch much TV anymore so i
try to catch what i can online....
but ... i always kind of play my own music video in my head for most
songs...especially ones that are emotional/special to me.... so it just
didn't match my brain video...so i think i'll stick with that and skips MTV's
version :) -shari
P.S. i'm really excited because i get to go to prom next week!!! i graduated
in 99 but i don't care. i got a poofy dress and i get to dance all night with
my best friends (my best friend is still a senior) ....is anyone else going
to prom? what are you wearing? what are you doing afterwards? (sorry. with my
job. i gotta be excited about something)

What's with all this "the video sucks" crap. It does not suck. It seems that
some people have a problem with the mud wrestling. I still think it is
obvious that it has everything to do with precisely what Johnny Truant is
being invited into in that section of the book and also reflects the song,
even without the book, very well...even if it might be considered a bit
garish in places...it is supposed to be sleazy. Set aside yer qualms and try
to consider what art value, if any, it might have before you write it off as
an industry weasel ploy of some kind. Don't you think it gives the girl
"character" from HOL a decidedly jaded quality. Think about it. She is
cheating on her long-time main guy and taking Johnny for a wild ride and a
wild f**k on Mulholland Drive in L.A...with no compunctions or second
thoughts about it. Mulholland is so infamous a make-out locale in L.A. that
there used to be a joke: "Did you hear they are going to rename Mulholland
Drive after a famous local TV personality? Yeah, Dick Lane."
