Heck, let's start one. We usually know what's going on long before Poe does. If we convince her that it's already happening, maybe it will. In any case I sort of think that, since touring and live shows are what Poe does best, this tour will lead to big time returns: hordes of new fans, leading to tons of record sales, leading to a headlining tour... I mean, during the years Poe was on tour before, I think at least 60-70% of the APs were won over by her live show. (I wish Cameron was still around.) As for good books, I read _The Good Soldier_ by Ford Madox Ford this winter, which was quite fine, and some Pynchon, who's been mentioned, and right now I am reading _The Education of Henry Adams_, and enjoying it quite a bit. Or I will get back to reading it when I'm done with my Senior Project, anyway. Meanwhile, if you've any desire for cheap thrills, there is a series of old young adult novels called "Class of '88", by Linda A. Cooney, which is truly remarkable. Excerable writing, everything a terrible, terrible cliche and every sentence clumsy, but somehow, some way, these books are full of a mysterious emotional power. Seek them out. Pynchon, Bret Easton Ellis (more on him later), Vonnegut, David Foster Wallace, William T. Vollman (MZD has more in common with him than some of the others...), et. al. Personally, I don't like Pynchon or Vonnegut, but that's just me. 2) Bret Easton Ellis: I met him once -- such a strange fellow. Anyway, I'm a big fan of "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho". I didn't care for "Glamorama" and "The Rules of Attraction". "The Informers" was ok. One interesting thing that makes it worth reading his entire ouevre is that so many of the characters cross plots into his other books. "Glamorama" became a kind of depository for a lot of them. Now, we all know that the movie version of "Less Than Zero" sucks (but it is very high on the cult/nostalgia factors, so I still watch it) -- but I have to disagree about the film version of "American Psycho". I thought it was utterly brilliant -- a bunch of lesbians adaping the most allegedly "mysoginist" novel of the '90s into a film? Phenominal! If they'd put all that stuff in that they left out, the film would have been X rated, and that would have been unacceptable. I thought they did an excellent job of revealing Patrick Bateman as the ultimate unreliable narrator. Anyway, if you like his stuff, you should definately check out the other 80's wonderkind-turned-literary whipping boy, Jay McInerey. 3) Russell Banks: Woah, that guy has more talent in his little finger... etc. "Rule of the Bone" was great -- I really liked the redemption of the bus from "The Sweet Hereafter" (great movie too, btw)-- you'll have to read both to get that. (: 4) Virgin Suicides -- excellent film and book. I'm really resentful of people who rag on Sophia Coppola for her adaptation of the book -- but I think she did a great job of distilling the essence of that era and making it visual. In a film adapation of an atmospheric book like that, with not a whole lot of plot (or rather, the point of the book is not the plot), it really is more important to capture the mood than to doggedly put every plot point on screen. Good soundtrack too! Now, if only Jefferey Euginidies would right another book, I'd be soooo happy. 5) Keri Hulme's The Bone People -- I've started this, but I'm not to far in. It is pretty good so far. On of my friends who grew up in NZ really, really likes it. Now, for my reccomendations! (; - -- "Out of the Girl's Room" and "Into The Night and The Good People of New York" (out next month, I got an advance copy) by Thisbe Nissen. Sorry, this might be for the girls only. If you're a bookish girl, but like "boy books" - -- see above -- Thisbe's your girl -- you'll see what I mean. Trust me. - -- Anything by new Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon. He's cute, he's intellegent, he's a damn good writer. Read "The Mysteries of Pittsburg" first -- it was his first novel. It was good, but I made the mistake of reading it after "Wonder Boys" (another great film adaptation, btw, that didn't get enough credit), which was freakin' amazing. His short stories are like little well cut diamonds, lots of factets, lots of flash, and just plain dazzling without being gaudy. - -- "Veronica" and "A Trip to the Stars" by Nicholas Christopher. Intellectual candy. - -- "The Eight" and "The Magic Circle" by Katherine Neville. Summer's coming, these are great poolside/beach books that aren't too offensive. - -- "Posession" by A.S. Byatt (Neal LaBute ("Nurse Betty", "In The Company of Men" is adapting this into film). Her other books are amazing as well. - -- "Pinball" by Jerzy Kosinski -- couldn't put this down. "Being There" (yet another great film) is excellent too. ok, enough from me, I've got to get to work! mrd Michaela R. And yes AT is correct, the "War On Drugs" is a war on Americans, and I am sure that you have all heard that "War is good for the economy". Well I hope that ALL that's right ALL vice becomes legal, I hope CRACK heads can get what they want CHEAP, so that they don't have to go out at 5 A.M. and kill a mother of 5 who is opening up the doors to a franchise grocery store that she don't even own. A woman who had NOTHING to do with drugs, another nameless, faceless, victim in the cross fire..... We are all suspects in the eyes of the law, and we are all prey to those who will steal to support their addictions. I hope all you "law abiding" people who drink and smoke but are "anti drug" choke on YOUR drug of choice, and those of you who are straight, mind your own business, you STILL CANNOT legislate behavior. haPPy 420 for ALL it's many reasons. sp00k etc ... #### ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 13:44:58 EDT From: Kyron2046@aol.com Subject: (no subject) That would be an interesting statistic if you looked at people who were actually Licensed to carry guns verses those who are not. I'm not saying that gun owners are less destructive than Dr.'s. But I worked in the medical Field for over 2 and half years right out of high school, and came to the conclusion that Dr.'s are the most negligent people on the planet and responsible for more pain and suffering than the diseases and illnesses they fight. (and mind you, I'm on their side)! Now don't get me wrong. I agree with you that running around calling Dr.'s Murder's as a whole is ridiculous. Don't think I'm not agreeing.. I just think it should be said, that not many gun owners (who are supposed to be carrying) are really all that dangerous. And not all Dr.'s are as they should be. I could probably get a list of hundreds of dead Children at the hands of the Dr.'s here in Phoenix. Because they refuse to write legibly, or actually take the time to give a proper Diagnosis. I know of one lady while I was working there that lost her leg because of a Dr.'s Bullshit handwriting... It's ridiculous... I guess what I am saying is I have an incredibly LOW opinion of Dr's. but Murderer's they are NOT. I think every Dr. Begins his carrier with the best intentions. Which is better than most gun owners.. :o) They only reason to own a gun is because you think that one day you might have to kill someone. Then again... Nothing wrong with coming to that conclusion either ... those of us who live in large cities might think that it may become necessary to take one life.. to save many. (can you tell I'm training to be a cop? And I hate cops too.) :o) But If you wanna make a change ya gotta stop bitching and get down there and do something. I never was healer.. so I'll leave the Dr. thing to someone else. I'll just concentrate on being a cop that's not an asshole. :o) If anyone doesn't agree with what I said here ... just take it for what it is.. my B.S. Opinion, and it doesn't really effect you either way. Just maybe reaches one or two people enough to say. "what's the deal?" i said. i told the lady my problem and she informed me that ticketmaster does not release ALL of the tickets for internet-only presales. just some. most of those are not even the "best available" seats. so, i'm thinking that's the reason most of us got shafted with 2nd or 3rd tier seating. but in an amphitheatre, seating is not bad. it's much better than lawn in my opinion. unless it's a concert where you want to mingle with people... anyways, i would really like to meet up with some APs. drop me a line, like someothers already have. and jandymo@hotmail.com (monkeygrrl66 _) if you give me the money, i will surely hook u up with a tee... nite all... - -reg ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 15:08:50 EDT From: BUDave18@aol.com Subject: Re: HAPPY 4/20 yo i dont think he was making a big deal. Legalize smack and crack! Spare me this idealistic nonsense. If anyone actually believes that getting the government more involved in drug traffic than they already are will actually improve things, you're an all-day sucker. Please. The government could fuck up a wet dream. Yeah, I'm sure that the local crackhead, shaking and vomiting from withdrawal, is going to wait until 10:00 tomorrow morning, when the clinic doles out his daily allotment. Christ. He'll be just as quick to kill someone whether crack is legal or not, because he's not gonna wait for it. Youre fooling yourself if you think otherwise. I wont even try to defend smoking. I was a smoker for years, and I quit, because I got sick of coughing up a shitload of money in exchange for a case of cancer. But Ill say this: Ive never heard of anyone killing a mother of 5 because they didnt have enough cash for a pack of Marlboros. As for drinking, lets think about it: Has it destroyed lives? Sure. Will it harm your health? Yes, IF you do it to excess, constantly, over a period of 20 years. Show me a junkie or crackhead that even lives that long. Besides, at least a moderate amount of alcohol, ingested daily (2 glasses of wine, for instance), is actually good for you. I defy any of you to show me a study that says, 20cc of high-grade Mexican Heroin, injected once daily, has been shown to reduce your cholesterol. And there have been times when I thought a beer sounded really good, but I never killed or stole for one. Quit with the apples-and-oranges comparisons. Now, heres my personal beef with weed. It tastes horrible, and it reeks worse than 36 straight hours in a smoke-filled bar. Besides, every big-time pot smoker (by which I mean the wake n bake, always-stoned crew) Ive ever known has amounted to nothing. They all live at home, cant hold down a job, and/or are (or have been) in jail. And dont bother regaling me with tales of great achievers who smoked pot all the time, because theyre a BIG exception, and you know it. And most people who make a really big deal out of smoking weed sound an awful lot like that guy Slater in Dazed and Confused. I dont think you can chalk that up to coincidence. They also spew the same idealistic shit that you see in the message below. And I do know folks that are regular smokers, and are happy, productive members of society who do just fine. I work with some. But I havent heard a single one of them say a goddamn thing about 420. In fact, none of them ever even talk about smokin! g. You want to smoke pot? Fine. You possess the free will to do so. I have the free will to state that I think its fucking stupid, and why I think so.
